NEWARK, NJ, United States (UPI) -- New Jersey wiretaps in the unfolding NHL betting scandal indicate Wayne Gretzky knew of his friend`s alleged multimillion-dollar gambling ring.
Gretzky said earlier in the week he had no knowledge of any gambling allegations until his friend Rick Tocchet called him Monday night.
There is no evidence that the hockey hall-of-famer made any bets, the Newark Star-Ledger said. But, investigators are looking into whether he may have placed wagers through his wife, Janet Jones.
Jones was among the gamblers who placed more than $1.7 million in wagers in the past six weeks with the ring allegedly run by Tocchet and a New Jersey state trooper, sources said.
Jones put down $500,000 on games during that six-week period, including $75,000 on last Sunday`s Super Bowl.
Gretzky is the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL and Tocchet is one of his assistant coaches.

And there are now reports that the investigation could end up involving the head coach of one team and possibly an NHL team owner!

This could end up being the worst sports gambling scandal since the infamous
Black Sox scandal of 1919.

This could end up being the worst sports gambling scandal since the infamous Black Sox scandal of 1919....except that it's hockey. Reality checks are sometimes necessary.

These puns are so hockey, I mean hokey.yeah, they never crease - I mean cease - to amaze me.
By the way - if you cook a hockey puck for a long time, you will get a goal tender.

I got a real bad feeling about this. I am a Flyer fan from the glory days, and I fear some of them are messed up in this.

Can you take someone OUT OF THE NHL HALL OF SHAME? The NFL didn't take OJ out of it's Hall.

I'd like to know where this information is coming from before I jump on Gretzky.

Janet Jones bet $500,000 over a 6 week period! Wow, how could the 'Great One" not have known that? Separate bank accounts?

Jim, Tockey was one of the flyers when Bobby Clark was GM.
This whole betting scandal is connected with the Philly mob. I would not be surprised if it nets a few Flyers.

When you are betting on the coin toss of the super bowl, you have a gambling problem.

It seems extremely unlikely he did not know of gambling of that magnitude. I doubt she makes much money - I had never heard of her until recently and only because she is married to him. I suspect that that both were involved in gambling and he had the bets placed in her name. In any case, it looks bad for him.
