Not a huge difference. They both come from the Middle English form grei. There are more famous individuals with the last name Grey. Both can be used as a noun, adjective or verb. In British writings, grey is used more often than gray.

Hi, PAL:

Hey, can anyone here tell me the difference between gray and grey?

Grey is the preferred British method of spelling the word.

Gray is the preferred method in the US.

Jack.
