dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | February 09, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 02/09/2006 4:50:19 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

sapient \SAY-pee-uhnt\ adjective
Wise, sage, discerning

Example sentences:
By actual measurement they are the brainiest of birds, and on subjective evidence they seem more sapient than most other living creatures.
-- David Quammen, "Bird Brains," New York Times, August 1, 1999

He also gives much of the book over to the voice and point of view of Wyatt's bright, quirky Aunt Ellen, who functions as a sapient observer of the world of the novel..
-- Lorrie Moore, "God Does Not Love Aunt Ellen," New York Times, February 14, 1993

Etymology: Sapient comes from Latin sapiens, sapient-, present participle of sapere, "to taste, to have sense, to know."

Happy Birthday to Dain Bramage and Fierce Allegiance!

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Hello. Would you mind giving me a thumbnail of this "Word of the Day?" --which sounds like fun. Would be interested in a ping possibility--first time I've noticed it on FR.

Morning again!

I saw some evangelists talking
On Fox and Friends this morning
They said the earth is getting hot
And gave us all a warning

They said we should stop the warming
And they feigned a sapient manner
They must be drinking koolaid-
They're carrying an envirowacko banner

They say that we should save the poor
From natural disasters-
Don't they know God owns the universe
This misguided bunch of pastors?

Off to work-back later...

As i hit my 40th birthday today, hopefully now my kids will consider me sapient. I doubt it, they will still think I am goofy!

You've been here since April 23, 2000, and have never seen us? We've been here five years. Our Fifth Anniversary is in about a week.

Basically, we bring in news via links on interesting threads using the WFTD. There are so many threads, it's hard to keep up with them.

Then we joke around, just as you saw Grimmy do.

We also help each other through troubled times, and we all have them.

Welcome aboard!

Just let one of the subbies (substitute teachers) know you'd like to be on the ping list, and you will be on the ping list.

Subbies are: xsmommy on Monday; Slip 18 on Tuesday; VRWCmember on Wednesday; Secret Garden on Thursday; and Argh on Friday.
