dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | February 09, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 02/09/2006 4:50:19 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

sapient \SAY-pee-uhnt\ adjective
Wise, sage, discerning

Example sentences:
By actual measurement they are the brainiest of birds, and on subjective evidence they seem more sapient than most other living creatures.
-- David Quammen, "Bird Brains," New York Times, August 1, 1999

He also gives much of the book over to the voice and point of view of Wyatt's bright, quirky Aunt Ellen, who functions as a sapient observer of the world of the novel..
-- Lorrie Moore, "God Does Not Love Aunt Ellen," New York Times, February 14, 1993

Etymology: Sapient comes from Latin sapiens, sapient-, present participle of sapere, "to taste, to have sense, to know."

Happy Birthday to Dain Bramage and Fierce Allegiance!

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

It's early February!

In Florida and South TX, the trees are already beginning to leaf out, but not up here in north GA or mid-TN yet.

(And Tioga is still cleaning the snow of her trees up north. Sea's are still frozen solid too.)

Sapitain't up there.

I missed a dose of biaxin by six hours and my whole head exploded. And are you sick of that metallic taste? I am. I have the munchies and drink too much just to get rid of it. rme, when will this end?

Maybe if we take the FReeper cruise we would get better. :^)

oh, my CT scan showed there is no reason the infection shouldn't have healed. No repeat surgery.

My daffodils are more than halfway up and we're supposed to get some snow tomorrow. Plants are not sapient creatures, just sap-producing.

Not a huge difference. They both come from the Middle English form grei. There are more famous individuals with the last name Grey. Both can be used as a noun, adjective or verb. In British writings, grey is used more often than gray.

It's supposed be 28F tonight, the freeze will probably kill all my japanese magnolia blossoms, leaving a shower of pink petals in my driveway...

On the other hand, this weather is perfect for flannel sheets, fuzzy slippers and irish coffee by the fire...

LOL!!!

they're calling for snow for us this weekend also.

Since I listen to radio stations that are nort and or northwest of us I figured we'd escape it.........hubby dissuaded me of that thought when he explained just what/where the Virginia Capes are........Geography was never my strong suit.

Thank you! I think Rick Warren and the others are scientifically challenged-they probably think espousing tinfoil hat theories like this will bring them some liberal followers.

I mean no offense, but aren't y'all worried about developing immune germs by taking all those antibiotics so often? I'd be terrified my immune system would crash or something equally awful.
