NFL should feel embarrassed

SEATTLE - And now a word about the officiating in Super Bowl XL. Two words actually.

It stunk.

The interference call, a push-off on Darrell Jackson that cost the Seahawks a first-quarter touchdown, was hideous.

If former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin hadn't been allowed to use his arm to get separation the innocent way Jackson did in Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh, Irvin would have caught maybe 20 balls in his career.

And the fourth-quarter holding call on right tackle Sean Locklear that nullified a spectacular catch by tight end Jerramy Stevens at the Pittsburgh 1-yard line was equally egregious.

Not to mention that he turned around, ran about 3 yards in the other direction, and caught the ball.

It seemed to me he was running his pattern, not doing anything interference-wise.

you weren't going to get a good game out of those two or any two teams after waiting around for 2 weeks...

both teams played like crap. Seattle did more to lose the game.

And No I'm not a Steelers hack. I am a Cleveland Browns fan. Eric can tell you about that if you don't believe me.

You are just doing this because it gives you something to scream about for whatever reason.

Have fun screaming in a vaccum in a couple weeks when NO ONE cares.

My God Man!

Have you been listening to ANY National Sports shows?
I'm not some lone voice in the deep wood! The whole sports world is rumbling with the fact that XL has an asterisk!

no they aren't.

I listen to sports talk virtually all day long.

And I saw your point about Jim Rome last night. Way to ONLY give half of the story.

No one is saying it was fixed, just that the refs looked very closely at everything Seattle did and ignored Pittsburgh. c'mon, calling Hasselbeck for a penalty when he made that tackle? they can probably find the subparagraph in the rules where that could possibly be called, but the fact that it was called means the refs were trying way too hard to insert themselves into the game.

it was a catch then fumble but no Steeler could recover it before it went out of bounds. this would have given Seattle the ball way downfield. why bring up hypotheticals?

the Rothlesberger block was no foul, the defender hit him on the side of the shoulder and he stumbled.

I cant recall a single marginal call going against Pittsburgh ... they didn't even call them offsides the half dozen times it clearly happened.

lucky for me the refs did all these things, cause I made money when I hit the under. I doubt I will ever bet the spread again.

this does highlight how bad the officiating was this post-season. and we all thought the NCAA bowl refs were bad!

gotta suck to be a Steeler fan though ... knowing everyone will forever think of this as a tainted win. I mean this is worse than taking out the opponents star QB on the second play of the game. This was not the players fault (on either side). it will be years before Pittsburgh makes it back to the SB, maybe even the playoffs.

What's done is done. But I hope they do something to improve the officiating for next year.

The Game may be over, but the controversy isn't.

Pittsburgh will never EVER get the national credit it craves for this tainted win.

Leavy couldn't overturn the supremely over-turnable touchdown call on Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's second-quarter, 1-yard touchdown lunge.

Didn't need to read further. At best the replay was inconclusive. At best.

They do need to get rid of the stupid two week delay.

Yes they do.

The "hype week" does nothing for the game.

Sure the players like it for a few reasons, one you get to rest up and get your family stuff squared away, but I think it hurts the game overall....

Not to mention... when Benny went left and edged the line of scrimmage on that goaline pass to Ward.... 2 of the linemen were passed the line of scrimmage (no doubt thinking that Ben was running) but given that he passed, they were illegally downfield.

No call, of course.

Mikey.. I'm Over it... in the sense that I was never ON it in the first place.

But this is my game, man... I LOVE football. I hate to see it fixed and neutered by pre-ordained marketing campaigns.

As a fan of football, but neither the Steelers or Seahawks, I can say part of the problem was not just the specific calls, but the fact that there were inconsistent calls. Completely different standards were being used in the defensive backfield, depending on who was on defense. Shortly after Jackson was called for defensive interference, Seattle was called for offensive interference, and I don't know how they reconciled those and other calls together.

calling Hasselbeck for a penalty when he made that tackle?

There was tackling on one player and clipping on the other in one move by Hasselback. The latter, according to what I've been told, will be called regardless of whether the purpose of the play was a tackle. Clipping is a safety concern.
