Stop Your Whining, Seattle Fans
EIB ^ | 2/6/06 | Rush Limbaugh

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Josh in Boise, Idaho. Josh, I'm glad you waited. You're up today. Nice to have you on the program.

CALLER: Mega dittos, Rush, from the Gem State.

RUSH: Thank you, sir.

CALLER: First of all I want to say congrats for your Pittsburgh Steelers last night.

RUSH: Thank you.

CALLER: And I myself rooted for Seattle. The Super Bowl is what I wanted to talk to you about, actually. I wanted to beat some of those whiners from the e-mails that were going to read to the punch on this. You still there, Rush?

RUSH: Yeah, I'm still here.

CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. You know, I watched the game last night and I disagreed with a lot of calls but there is no way that the referees in any away influenced the outcome of the game -- and, you know, if I were Holmgren, I would be really insulted as a coach of the Seattle Seahawks that the fans would whine about the referee calling, and the reason why is I would say that the Seahawks didn't have any power to come back to the game, which I thought they put a up a really good fight -- and you know, the bottom line, Rush, is that Pittsburgh deserved to win. As a coach, I've always told my players and my parents to shut up to the referee; don't talk to the referee, and after the game I've never told them to come up with excuses leading to the idea that the referees had something to do with the outcome of the game.

RUSH: Here's the thing, though. I do think the NFL has an officiating problem. This post- season did feature some pretty disastrous calls that the league admitted to a day or two after games were played. But, you know, the old theory is they even out over the course of a season or over the course of two or three seasons, the human element and so forth. It's just I have never seen it before. E-mail today was just loaded with whining Seahawks fans about the officiating. I mean, every fan of every team can cite a big game that you've lost and the officiating didn't go your way, and it's the way of the world. It just the way it is.

I don't want to get into an in-depth game analysis here but I'll just say one thing. I saw some of the worst clock management on behalf of a professional football team in my life in that game last night by the Seattle Seahawks. I was stunned. They just seemed out of control, and when the game started, it looked like the Seahawks were going to own that game in the first quarter. I was really biting the nails.

Josh, I appreciate the phone call.

True, he was already falling. But that does NOT matter in the NFL rulebook. I assure you.

The only stat that matters is the final score. Ben had a bad game but hung in there and tried his best.

You need to review the rulebook. First of all, in college once a player is down, he's down regardless of whether a defensive player touched him or not. In the NFL, there is no need to touch an offensive player when he's on the ground if he is "down by contact". If it was otherwise every defensive hit that sent a runner flying to the turf would be followed by a mad scramble to touch the guy after he hit the ground.

The key is "down by contact". If the runner goes down by contact, regardless of how slight, he is down. Overturning the call was correct- no Seattle fumble.

Down by contact. The Hawks QB clearly slipped during a cut. The Steeler just barely touched him as he was slipping. A touch did not knock the man down, he slipped.

Therefore, he was not "Down by Contact". He slipped and fell. He was not touched after he hit the ground and he fumbled.

I thought it was a fumble and a bad call by the official.

However, it is a moot point at this time. The game is over and the Steelers won. There were other bad calls that went against the Steelers too.

We need a rematch of this game next year to clear the air.

He had a little picture of a cartoon circle eating popcorn too on another thread. It looked just like the characters they use over at DU. Made me suspicious.

It doesn't matter if the touch caused him to go down or not. He was down as soon as his knee hit, which happened a split second before the ball came out. All of you who think that the defensive player's touching him doesn't make him down by contact are simply wrong.</p>

That may be so, but, apparently, you wouldn't know a compliment if it hit you upside the head with a 2x4.

An NFL player isn't down when his knee touches unless he was "Down by Contact" or a player touches him when he is actually down. You are talking college rules, not NFL rules.

Again, he wasn't "Down by Contact" to begin with. He slipped.

No, I'm not. I am tlaking pro rules. In the NFL, if an offensive player with the ball is headed to the ground, for any reason, and a defensive player touches him before he's on the ground, or while on the ground, he is down by contact. If what you argue is true, an offensive player who slips and hits the ground, and is touched while on the ground would not be down by contact, since the defensive player's touch did not cause him to go down. You are simply wrong.

If you don't believe me, maybe you'll believe former NFL referee Jerry Markbreit.

"A runner is down by contact when he is contacted by an opponent and subsequently goes to the ground with anything other than his hands or feet."

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/askthereferee/cs-051228askjerrymarkbreit,1,1174018.story?coll=cs-bears-asktheref-headlines

Causation has nothing to do with it.

Maybe I am wrong, but the final score was right. Three touchdowns and three extra points by the Steelers=21 points.

One touchdown, one extra point and one field goal by the Hawks=10.

Final score: Steelers 21, Seahawks 10.

Steelers won.

The key is "down by contact". If the runner goes down by contact, regardless of how slight, he is down. Overturning the call was correct- no Seattle fumble.

Again which is exactly my point. He was not down by contact. He was "grabbed" at by Haggens (I think) and was hardly touched at all. Continued forward until he fell via tripping over his own feet. The Ref on the field did not call him down due to Haggens merely grabbing towards him and not impeding his progress whatsoever.

A review from the booth is suppose to only change a call on the field that shows irrefutable evidence. The review here did not in any way, shape or form show the Pittsburgh playing knocking him down by contact. It showed a Pittsburgh player merely touching his jersey prior to Hasselback tripping over his own feet.

My point on college was that you can't be hit and while falling to the ground fumble (prior to your knee hitting the ground) and it be called "you were down via the hit"...no your knee has to touch the ground before you are declared down.
