RUSH: Josh in Boise, Idaho. Josh, I'm glad you waited. You're up today. Nice to have you on the program.
CALLER: Mega dittos, Rush, from the Gem State.
RUSH: Thank you, sir.
CALLER: First of all I want to say congrats for your Pittsburgh Steelers last night.
RUSH: Thank you.
CALLER: And I myself rooted for Seattle. The Super Bowl is what I wanted to talk to you about, actually. I wanted to beat some of those whiners from the e-mails that were going to read to the punch on this. You still there, Rush?
RUSH: Yeah, I'm still here.
CALLER: Oh, okay. All right. You know, I watched the game last night and I disagreed with a lot of calls but there is no way that the referees in any away influenced the outcome of the game -- and, you know, if I were Holmgren, I would be really insulted as a coach of the Seattle Seahawks that the fans would whine about the referee calling, and the reason why is I would say that the Seahawks didn't have any power to come back to the game, which I thought they put a up a really good fight -- and you know, the bottom line, Rush, is that Pittsburgh deserved to win. As a coach, I've always told my players and my parents to shut up to the referee; don't talk to the referee, and after the game I've never told them to come up with excuses leading to the idea that the referees had something to do with the outcome of the game.
RUSH: Here's the thing, though. I do think the NFL has an officiating problem. This post- season did feature some pretty disastrous calls that the league admitted to a day or two after games were played. But, you know, the old theory is they even out over the course of a season or over the course of two or three seasons, the human element and so forth. It's just I have never seen it before. E-mail today was just loaded with whining Seahawks fans about the officiating. I mean, every fan of every team can cite a big game that you've lost and the officiating didn't go your way, and it's the way of the world. It just the way it is.
I don't want to get into an in-depth game analysis here but I'll just say one thing. I saw some of the worst clock management on behalf of a professional football team in my life in that game last night by the Seattle Seahawks. I was stunned. They just seemed out of control, and when the game started, it looked like the Seahawks were going to own that game in the first quarter. I was really biting the nails.

Well. To the Seahawks fans, losing isn't everthing. Its the only thing.
They lost, but they can't get over it.

This is beyond dispute.
I think you could really take the one td away from Pittsburgh, but that wouldn't change the outcome (except for the gamblers). Aside from that I don't think the calls were one sided, to either side.
But I think Rush might have a point about bad calls in general. I'm not sure if I think the replay helps or hurts wih that.
I think the Steelers won it fair and square. Seattle had the best of them for most of the first half, so it is hard to see them as some kind of "victim".

I know, you win some calls and you lose some. But Hasselback was touched before he was down. Therefore no fumble. ;o)

Isn't he the one who scored a touchdown but was called for pass interference when the defender did the "he touched me" dance?
Who was the guy who caught the ball and touched one foot down in bounds crossed the plane of the endzone and the second foot landed out of bounds? I don't remember if that was Stevens or not. I bet if Pittsburgh had made that play, it would have been called a touchdown. That was right near the end of the first half.

I wish they would get rid of the instant replay. I hate it and it seldom makes the officiating any better.
I am not a Steelers fan or a Seahawks fan, but the officiating in last night's game was AWFUL. And, the Seahawks bore the brunt of the refs' mistakes.
Not being a fan of either team, I can say the refing was terrible, and could've affected the game. That said, both the Steelers and the Seahawks played terrible games, and the coaches weren't that great. (especially Seattle coaches- and they have some smart coaches)
No (I don't think so?...Unless again the rules have been changed in the last several years). You have to be touched when your knee is on the ground - If Hasselback had not fumbled and the got on his feet and kept running (before being touched with his knee on the ground) it would have been a live ball.
Just as why there was no whistle blown during that play. He was not touched while on the ground.
Stealers used a 12th man (refs) to win.
No argument here. The Steelers and their fans had a legit gripe in that game. ...and had they lost the gripe would've intensified to a full-blown wail.
The officiating was not up to scratch last night but it didn't cost them the game though.
We'll never know. The calls were made on huge plays. ....at least 14 pts were unjustly taken off the board. But you're right, the missed FGs, bad clock management, dropped balls, and inability to defend against the big play were part of the Hawks' undoing.
The big problem with football in general is that holding takes place on nearly every play -- it's called whenever the refs decide to call it. Needless to say, this creates big problems. In the playoffs the refs usually let the ticky-tack stuff slide, and we don't see TDs called back by phantom holds or when DBs and WRs barely touch each other. .....but not this time.
My teams have been on both sides -- I hate winning after being the beneficiary of crappy officiating just like I hate losing. ....but the latter is worse ;)
And they bore the brunt of the sixshooter discharging in their feet as well, unfortunately.

Good. lol I've seen an awful lot of folks who did not have a dog in this fight express their disgust with the officiating of last night's game. Maybe they just hate the Steelers and aren't saying it. lol
Seeing Cowher cry after losing is even worse than seeing Dick Vermeil cry after winning...
