They got me -- now what? (ebay account hacked)
ebay | 2/4/06

Posted on 02/04/2006 10:16:48 AM PST by pabianice

I received an email from ebay titled "A26 TKO NOTICE Restored Account" that states that someone has hacked my ebay account and is using it to swindle other people. It urged me to go to my account and change my password, the go to "Securing my account."

So I tried to, but my ebay account password has been changed by the hacker.

WTF do I do? I have no way to contact ebay. Is there a phone number I can call them with? This really sucks. If it can happen to me it can happen to anyone.

Help!

I am closing the barn door after the horse has gone, but this is real.

NEVER answer an email asking you about any account anywhere.

Due to the fact that our email addresses are on the department webpage, my boss and myself receive several emails of this type every day.

I laugh as I nuke these hacker emails and blacklist them!

Never respond to such an email.

Ignore my previous post, p. I read your earlier comments.

Cancel the account through Ebay, and open a new one.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/isgw-account-theft-reporting.html

(Cut and paste into browser). This is the eBay page that addresses this problem. Towards the bottom it tells you what to do if you cannot login.

Sorry you're having this trouble. I wish you luck!

"No one is listening. I did not give my password to anyone. I received an email from ebay telling me someone was using my account fraudulently and to go and change my password. I logged out, opened a clean web page, and tried to log into ebay."

We’re listening, but you didn’t say that before. No you bring up the “clean login”. Still, I’m skeptical that you really did that in the beginning because I’m not aware that ebay sends out those kind of messages.

Can you copy and paste the text of that email into this forum?

Also, put your cursor over any link present in that email. Does the web address that shows on the bottom of Outlook Express in your status line match that of the text of the link to ebay, or is it something like www.fakesite.ebay/password.com

"A26 TKO NOTICE Restored Account" is a known phishing scam. I'm not sure exactly how you got locked out of your account, but it's possible that by opening the email you recieved a url redirect. Get a good anti-malware program and run a few scans before you type ANYTHING else you don't want compromised on your computer.

Speaking from experiance - it took months to sort everything out after I was hit by a Paypal fraud.

close your account.

never reply to an ebay email that takes you to a site where it asks for your name and/or password

ebays website has a fraud scam section for people in situations like yours; go read it. by the pay if you have paypal or anything in ebay you better shut the account down

You should have used google before Free Republic for this.

Here are the google results for “A26 TKO NOTICE Restored Account”.

Don’t worry too much though. It looks like the risk level is “medium”, whatever than means.

if it says password no longer valid then do the "i forgot my password" and have them email what it is to you. if you changed your email without updating it at ebay then you better delete the account or if someone else picked up that email account name that you discarded, all they have to do is go to ebay and do the "i forogt my password" and now they have your pword if you didnt make the email addy change in your ebay account profile.

This applies to many things. The so called Good Hands People {Allstate} called me one morning wanting to update personal information. I knew the call was real by caller ID. The agents name was on it. They read me my SSN to me and asked if this was correct. I replied yes. Then they wanted my wife's SSN. I said she can not drive so you don't need it. They said we must have it for our records. I said again she can not drive, she never will be able to drive so you don't need it. They started threats about discontinuing discounts etc and asked one more time for it. I impolitely told them this time it was none of their business.

After I hung up I thought a bit and the more I thought the madder I got. I called the number back and this time asked to speak to my agent personally. I told the agent that was a poor business practice as well as a security issue and no one should give them such information when they call. This is company that also deals in financial futures such as investments. I said do not ever call me again and ask such questions and if you link her SSN to my driving discount when she can not drive I will cancel my business with you.

I explained to the agent I do not give info out to unsolicited calls. Next time they want information write me a letter requesting it.

I get those emails on a regular basis. It a phishing scam.
I suggest contacting ebay via email. They will give you an email address to forward this scam to.

Only trust the email that sent directly to your ebay account in ebay.

Good too meet you. There’re just a hand full of us around here AFAIK. I got sucked in with “Only a Lad” on 91X in 1982. The originality, twisted humor and un-pc themes of Boingo connected with my post juvenile angst. Most people would have grown out of it by now…

UPDATE: This is gonna hurt...

The fake ebay email I got was apparently sent to millions of people (subject line begins with "A26"). When ebay got wind of it it changed everyone's password just to make sure their accounts were secured. So they expect several million phone calls from people just like mine. I hope they've put on some extra help.

I don't think I could ever grow out of Elfman/Boingo. I still think Danny is on the cutting edge. The Corpse Bride was great. By the way, I checked out your Elfman webpage. There are a lot of Elfman updates if you're interested. Richard Elfman gives regular Danny updates on his site, in case you didn't know or were interested.

Weird. I was able to sign out and sign in with the same password just now. Wonder if they're doing it in phases.
