Questions on Ancient India, Gupta Civilization (Vanity)

Posted on 02/01/2006 4:22:13 AM PST by DeuceTraveler

I just thought I'd throw this question out for the history fans to see what they think. I've been asked to research the military and cultural aspects of India's ancient Gupta civilization. I have to publish an article for a magazine on the subject, but am living in Germany and my personal library consists of American, European and Japanese historical works. I have hardly anything on India and have been searching the internet for factual information.

Besides an English translation of the Siva-Dhanur-Veda, I have not found anything of historical quality. Most of what I've seen focuses on some post-Modernist mumbo jumbo about how Hindus love and respect everyone and that the world would be a better place if we were all like the Indians.

Do any of you fellow historians have any recommended net pages that are more dependable? Thanks for any responses... time for me to read those fun Vedas...

Welcome again. A word of advice: I would also email assistant professors and/or people lower down the ladder. Professors the world over are the same- stuffy, self important and sloooow.

Hindu mythology
by Bernard Doyle

The Hindus have created a rich, complex mythology which is still very much alive. Hundreds of millions of people continue to believe in the multitudes of gods which inhabit the Hindu pantheon. This tapestry of religion is the result of millennia of integration. The Indian sub-continent has been a crossroad for several cultures, and the Indian people have incorporated numerous ideas from different faiths.

Still, one cosmic Truth holds in Hindu thought, and that is that all things are simply a part of a greater, whole One. In early Hindu belief, which still holds true, for nothing in Hinduism is ever discarded, this Universal whole was called Brahmam. All beings and things, from the gods and demons, through humans, on to the lowliest pebble on the beach, were and are part of this One. In later times, the neuter Brahmam became equated with the masculine Brahma, but the original idea is still very much a part of Hindu thought.
