I briefly owned a large German Shepherd many years ago after getting out of the service. Although a well trained dog, he was so intimidating looking that my vet was afraid of him. I gave him back to my sister who at that time raised German Shepherds used by the OK State Police.

I don't want a dog for protection anymore, just one that will tell me if someone is around that shouldn't be. I have a 38 special that should adequately protect both of us.

This is the correct attitude sir/ma am. If you can't control the animal, and I don't mean beat it with chains....I mean by good training and perhaps a obedience school, then by all means send the dog to someone that can.

Most people can't handle a Scottie or Chihuahua, let alone a Pit Bull or German Shepard. At least you have the intelligence and good sense to know your limits......
