NBC10.com 3-Year-Old Critical After Being Mauled By Pit Bull
POSTED: 3:14 pm EST January 30, 2006 UPDATED: 9:07 am EST January 31, 2006
NEW CASTLE, Del. -- A 3-year-old girl remains in critical condition at Christiana Hospital.
Police said the incident happened on Oakmont Avenue at 10:30 a.m. in New Castle.
Police and paramedics responded after they received the report of a child who was attacked by a pit bull. When they arrived, they found Destiny Campbell suffering from massive head and shoulder injuries.
Police said the victim and her mother had driven to a home to pick up the child's grandmother. While inside the home, a dog, named Diamond, attacked the child. Police said that the attack was unprovoked.
A group of area residents responded to the calls for help from relatives and began beating the dog with sticks and broom handles.
The SPCA later responded to the scene and caught the dog, which had fled from the residents.
Witnesses said that the dog was generally peaceful and calmed down immediately after the attack.
"After this happened, the dog appeared to be polite. The tail was wagging. Even when the SPCA arrived and had to corral the dog with the lasso, the dog was still listening," said Trinidad Navarro, of the New Castle County Police Department.
The pit bull belonged to a family member, Turquoise Robinson. Police took her into custody on unrelated charges.
As she was being taken into custody on Monday afternoon, Robinson saw NBC 10 reporter Tim Furlong near a police car waiting to take her away.
"Why are they taking you away?" asked Furlong, as Robinson walked by.
Robinson then spit on the reporter as a cameraman taped the incident, and she responded, "that's why."
Police then charged Robinson with spitting on Furlong.
Robinson has not been charged in connection with the pit bull attack.
"I do not have any problem at all with a dog--any breed--being humanely euthanized when it has been proven to be dangerous. Put the dog down so there is no chance of it being adopted out to another potentially irresponsible owner, then PUNISH the irresponsible owner who owned said menace."
Agreed!
"Aggression was bred out of bulldogs (the specific breed, that is) in a few short decades, after bull-baiting was banned in merrie olde England."
We have to keep in mind though that "pit bulls" are part terrier.
Terriers do have an accentuated prey drive.
While any particular "pit bull" will have this trait to a greater or lesser extent,
anyone considering owning one should made aware of this.
Our discussion is over, do not post to me again. Thank you.
Piss off.
You're a fool.
How long will it take the big man of little ideas to go running to the mods?
You are right that they do happen every where, but an overwhelming majority happen in bad areas. The common link is an owner not being responsible.
Name calling.
Nice.
Your pit bull is so stupid it attacked a corpse.
Your pit bull is so ugly it's...as ugly as a pit bull.
Your pit bull cried at Brokeback Mountain.
There The idea that it's the owner, not the breed, is actually a liberal-fascist notion: that you can CONTROL the outcome or destiny because of your feelings, your superiority, your ever-so-generous bleeding heart. Maybe you're on the wrong forum.
Kudos. You have my respect, fwiw.
I am glad you liked the info. I wasn't disagreeing with most of you had posted other than your general conclusion about the breed. I believe the more people understand the real problems with dog attacks the more they will come to realize what a bad rap pit bulls and rotts get. I don't want people to think I am saying all dogs of these breeds are extremely firiendly and should be approached on the street. I am just pointing out that they are good dogs as a group when given the proper training and socialization.
You definetly have to defend yourself. I just didn't want your bad experience to leave you a bad impression of the breed or owners. The good owners get more angry than anybody when they hear about irresponsible people giving all of us a bad name. You should complain on this guy for not keeping his dogs constrained or say something to him if you are comfortable. I had a German Shepherd as a child. They are great dogs but they are right up there at the top of the list for deadly attacks. I have been in situations were I have seen extremely ferocious shepherds, but I still like the breed a lot. It is really true that people can make any breed ferocious and the big dogs like pits, Rots, and GSD ar the most commonly used for these purposes because of their strength and agility. Citronella sprays developed by dog trainers would probably be the best repellant for future scenarios. Mace doesn't always work well on an out of control dog and a gun is not desirable just because the laws in your state and I think the spray would be easier to deploy and faster working.
"Your integrity while dealing with a fool is noted, Kanawa.
Kudos. You have my respect, fwiw."
My sentiments as well. Some people are too much for me to deal with. All the fair-minded people I talk to about this issue usually come to agree with more or at least move in my direction. The people like that guy make their minds up and usually know less about the actual facts than anyone.
Boston, DC, LA, Detroit, Denver, Cinncinnati, Ontario, France, Germany, England are among the places who banned dog breeds. None of these places have conservative governments. The Alabama Supreme Court ruled that breed bans are unconstitutional in have no basis. Several Red States have laws that make it illegal to ban a breed. Is Alabama a liberal state. You make similar arguments to the gun grabbers. You obviously don't believe in personal responsibility and you make excuses for criminals by blaming a dog for their criminal intent and negligence. You say the owners are not to blame. You are really a liberal who blames external factors for people's crimes. That is what liberals do. Someone committs a crime and they blame a dog or a gun or alchol, when it is really the person.
Perhaps my general conclusion about the breed is built on illusions ... but all my reason rebels against that. You could be right that the media simply doesn't report deadly attacks made by other breeds, and so pits and rotts are unfairly represented. But then ... again ... I find that possiblity doubtful because unlike in politics, where the media is great at leaving things unreported for reasons of a political agenda, there's no political agenda as to breeds of dogs. And my own personal experience points to pits and rotts and no others as far as real genuine risk of MY DEATH. Please understand: I did not approach the dogs, I did not trespass on their territory, indeed I didn't acknowledge them at all, and that last bit is perhaps what saved me.
And that's the thing. If somebody has a poorly trained and badly socialized muttly, or chihuaha or poodle or labrador or Australian shepherd or border collie or even a German Shepherd, the possibility of that dog KILLING someone is pretty slim, with some exceptions I'm sure, but not many. Even a GS or a Great Dane or a Doberman will aim to hurt, not kill, it seems, though I may be mistaken. Rotts and pits, on the other hand, seem to go off for no reason and stick with an attack until they are either forcefully removed or their victim is DEAD.
People do and should have dogs, God bless them and God bless the dogs too, I think dogs are wonderful, amazing creatures that have helped us humans to be more civilized. I don't even like to seem them on leashes. I know personally a family whose dog literally saved the life of one of the kids by jumping in front of a striking rattlesnake and taking the bite himself instead of letting the child get bit. People WILL and should have dogs, and it's a given that not all people will properly train or socialize them. That's fine with most breeds -- but can be fatal with rotts and pitts. I'm a less-government-is-better person. Personally, I think I should have the right to shoot dead on the spot any Rott or Pitt that is running loose on a public street. I think that if more people killed those loose dogs on sight, fewer owners would be irresponsible. So I'm afraid I do have a bad impression of the breeds, and nothing you've said in your excellent, reasoned, and refreshingly civil posts has changed that impression.
Los Angeles bans them? Huh? I've never heard of that, and I live in So Cal.
Shouldn't have said ban in that post. I was writing fast. I meant restrictions based on breeds. All of those places have some breed specific laws. Only a few of the places have total bans, but they all have laws that unfairly single out breeds.
This post should have stated that all of these places have restrictions based on breed, not bans based on breed. Some do have bans though like DC and some EU nations.
Make that San Fran actually. I knew I would get it right eventually. Not sure where LA's laws stand.
Oh, okay. Still, I haven't read in any local papers or heard on any local news reports about any restrictions anywhere down here on pitts or rotts. Maybe (probably!) I'm just not paying attention.
Sorry, but NO SALE!
I've heard one too many story about a Pit Bull that "wasn't bred for fighting or defense and not by some 'hip-hop' person" yet that tears a child to shreds.
They're volatile. As well, it's impossible to take a pup and "not raise it hostily" and have it turn out "hostile" and then not blame the breed.
Yeah I think LA doesn't ban them, but San Francisco recently passed laws restricting breeds. I've seen that Dog Whisperer guy on TV. He has a APBT and lives in LA I think.
