Star search: Why so few Cowboys in Hall?
By Brad Townsend
Many Cowboys fans are among the suspicious. They believe that only bias and conspiracy can explain the relatively paltry number of Cowboys in the Hall of Fame. No franchise has won more playoff games (32) or played in more Super Bowls (eight), and only one other team has won as many championships (five). But only five Cowboys players are in the Hall.
No Cowboy has been elected since Mel Renfro in 1996, but that could change Saturday. Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin and Rayfield Wright are among the 15 finalists. Bylaws dictate that three to six former players get elected annually.
The conspiracy theory isn't limited to fans. Even selectors talk about it.
"Yeah, of course people have had bias against the Cowboys ever since the America's Team [expletive]," says Sports Illustrated senior writer Paul Zimmerman, a longtime Hall voter.

One guy on the thread hated the Cowboys because of the Vikings loss in 75, the Packers hated the Cowboys because they put them out of the playoffs three straight times in the ninties, the Steelers hate O'Donnell more than they hate the Cowboys, the 49ers have actually lost more title games to the Cowboys than they've won.
As I noted earlier, though, several Cowboys players aren't counted because they made their names with other teams. I also think the Hall of Fame has kind of an affirmative action policy. A good player on a team that hasn't had success is going to get in faster than a player on a team that already has representatives.
During the sixties-seventies, there was definitely a prejudice against the south and west in the NFL. Except for the 49ers and Rams (49ers started in All-American Football League and Rams moved from Cleveland), there wasn't an NFL team west of Chicago/Green Bay or south of the Mason-Dixon line. The NFL only expanded because of pressure from the AFL (the Cowboys, Saints, Vikings and Falcons were created to keep the AFL from getting market share, not because the NFL wanted them). For the first about fifteen years after the expansion, there was definitely a northeastern slant to both the officiating and the commentating.
I'm sure the NFL would like to see the franchise succeed in that market.
I don't know why but it seems like there were more big throws in the NFL when I was younger.
Too bad the "crash" took place 20 yards downfield, with the back or receiver often bouncing OFF his "hit."
Waters?? Deked way too much, hung on for dear life, and was SLOW.
These are MY memories.
If you stuck these two on any other NFL team with no pass rush and average LBs, they'd have been even MORE mediocre and beaten long ALL DAY.
Your entire post is right on, Doc. BTW did you ever catch that one-armed 49ers fan?
Yep.
Gad! You should have been around when the AFL started up in the early 1960s! They were as pass happy as could be...
Back off slick. The post I was responding too did not include ANYTHING to do with the Super Bowl. It showed teams records in NFL/NFC Championship games (Cowboys 8-8). I was questioning what that had to do with the topic at hand. Seems it is more likely you who has been indulging in the funny stuff considering you are flying off the handle without even knowing what people are talking about.
Well... They do say too many gees will affect your memory.
I find your 'neutrality' highly suspect as all you have done is trash the Cowboys and you started 'flying off the handle' because the DMN article said, "...only one other team has won as many championships (five)."
Now, we can all agree to disagree, but don't tell me to back off or accuse others of 'flying off the handle' when all anyone has to do is read the words you have posted.
You don't like the Cowboys and that's okay. You want to split hairs... Okay again.
Just don't throw stones when you live in a glass house... And it is there for all to see!
BTW It would be a dull football season if we all rooted for the same team...
The way I've always heard it is that NFL Films noticed wherever they went, there were a large number of people wearing Cowboys attire. No matter which stadium they were at, Cowboys clothes-wearing people were there. It got NFL Films wondering about that. They looked at NFL Properties and found that the Dallas Cowboys, at the time, was number one in merchandising. Jerseys, hats, trinkets, whatever. Dallas was it. So, when the title of the Cowboys season video was due to be named, they came up with "America's Team". Dallas loved it and everyone else got to hate it.
Contrary to popular belief, Tex Schramm didn't start it. But he loved the name and made a mint off it.
Nah....it'll never be as bad as losing to a brand new expansion team playing its very first game. And your state rival, to boot.
If Houston does lose this fall, it'll just be a regular season game. ;-)
I think Lincoln Coleman should be in the Hall.
Whoa Max... I had to rattle the old gray matter for a moment. Lincoln Coleman, as I recall, was a backup running back for the 1993 Super Bowl squad. He later played in the Arena League for Grand Rapids...
Okay, Max, drop that tongue and step back from your cheek!
I've had a bias against the Cowboys since Drew Pearson pushed off on Nate Wright in the 1975 NFC Championship Game :)
LOL
Don't recall the cartoon you mention, but it certainly sounds like Guindon's humor!
