AFL West #2 @ AFL East #1
AFL East #2 @ AFL West #1
Total number of teams in the AFL was 8.
NFL Eastern V NFL Western
Eastern - Capitol Div V Century Div
Western - Central Div V Coastal Div
Total number of teams in the NFL was 16.
Do we consider the 1969 Chiefs a wild card team?
I watched the Colts-Giants "Sudden Death" NFL Championship on black & white TV and was cheering on Baltimore's win. They were originally the Dallas Texans of 1952 who played the last part of their season on the road as the Cotton Bowl was empty when they did play.
I was a Colts fan until the Cowboys and AFL Texans came along in 1960. I was more of a Texans fan that Cowboys... Hey, the Texans won!
Over the years, I have seen more than my share of Cowboy's Haters. There are a covey of them here on FR. But that doesn't mean I glory in it. It is just the way it is.
JeffAtlanta in post 36 hits the nail squarely. The problem is that there are too many 1970's Steelers in the HOF. i.e. It is not that most of these Steelers were not very good players, the Hall should have only great players in it.
That I can agree on!
Ok..but that does not equate to league championships or league championship games because the Packers have won 12 league championships and the Bears have won 9. You are just showing records in the NFL/NFC championship game. Many of the teams that won NFC championship games then went on to lose the Super Bowl. I guess I am saying I am not sure what the relevency of that number is..except to show that the Cowboys get there alot but have a mediocre record in them.
He is a nice guy and not the bumpkin he portrays (I've met him, he live near Dallas.) and is a Southern Gentleman...
But he played for that Yankee team!
That's a tough one. They were a seated #2 in the west.
They won 13-6 at NY on December 26th, 1969 and then won at Oakland 17-7, on January 4th, 1970.
Sadly I was too young to see him play but what my father liked about him was that he always seemed to know when to throw the deep ball.
Thanks. I think that voters have come to their senses since that time but it still causes problems. Because of Lynn Swann's induction, every receiver that has good but not great career numbers but has a few big catches in big games can say "well Lynn Swann is in the HOF and he didn't have great numbers."
The same can be said of big name role players on any dynasty. Moose Johnson and Ken Norton could make the same claims.
Dallas has been to the NFL/NFC title game 16 times in 45 seasons, they have won 8. The have a 5-3 record in the Super Bowl won (XXX , XXVIII, XXVII, XXII, VI) and lost (V,X,XIII).
The Packers have been around since 1921, before the NFL.
I wonder if playing inside next year will increase their attendance. I could understand not wanting to watch a lousy football team in 104 degrees heat.
If the Super Bowl has done one thing it's to educate the American public on Roman numerals.
Hey F16, you picked the wrong weekend to start sniffing glue...
Cliff Harris was a terrific tackler and had the nickname "Capt Crash!" Charlie Waters was not far behind. You must have been talking about Marvin Harris and James Waters that played on the San Antonio Toros...
Queers are not allowed in the hall of fame
Thus no dallas guys.
See what you started!!!!!
So, winning five of eight Super Bowls is mediocre? Big, you and and F16 both picked the wrong weekend to start sniffing glue...
Maybe Dennis Green will finally get the Cardinals on the road to some winning seasons, but the history of the Cards (and their ownership) says no...
Didn't forget him, just forgot to mention him. Emmitt was in on the first day of his retirement IMO
Yep, you missed some exciting football... And Terry Bradshaw could chunk it!
