Vehicle breaks through thin ice on Lake Minnetonka

The Hennepin County Water Patrol says two women are lucky to be alive after their car broke through Lake Minnetonka Saturday night.

Rescuers say they were driving a Ford Explorer on the lake, a few hundred yards from shore, near Hardscrabble Point in Minnetrista.

"All of a sudden, the vehicle just went through the ice," says Sgt. Steve Hartig. "They weren't sure if they drove into open water or if the ice actually gave way."

The victims quickly crept to the top of the SUV and some fishermen came to their rescue.

"The way the ice conditions are right now, they're very lucky to be alive," Sgt. Hartig says.

Neither victim needed to go to the hostpial. However, the Ford Explorer is probably gone for good.

Recent warm temperatures forced the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to issue an ice advisory Friday. The DNR is advising anglers to check the ice around their fish houses and consider removing them, if it's safe to do so.

The SUV just fell through the ice, I guess. Every news outlet in the area has been warning folks about the thinning ice, due to the warmest January here in over 100 years. Yet....yet....the lure of icefishing is overwhelming.

Wait till these ladies find out how large the fine is for dumping their oil and fuel-filled SUV in the lake. Uffda!

Keep an eye on these two. One day, they too, may be Darwin Award winners.

It's amazing how many big ice houses are still out on the lakes. The ice is pretty weak on most of the lakes, and what there is is getting spongy.

Yet...folks are still driving out there. I watched a Chevy Suburban drive out on a lake yesterday that I wouldn't even walk out on.

I guess they changed their minds about commiting suicide at the last moment and bailed out of the evil SUV.

Sigh. I used to work near Minnetonka. :-)

I remember the ads about "and keep your car window rolled down, so you can escape when you DO fall through the ice...Cold words...from the Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources" (or somesuch agency).

Cheers!

---Did they mention in the ad about keeping a bottle of Jack Daniels Whiskey in the glovecompartment in case the car breaks down in the ice so you can keep warm? =)

No, but Perkins used to advertise hot soups in the winter.

Full Disclosure: I prefer Byerly's Wild Rice... :-P

Cheers!

Sounds like there are some IDIOTS up there.
It would totally freak me out to drive out on a lake, even if it was deemed safe.

I thought that too when I went there for grad school, as I grew up on the East Coast.

But you haven't lived till you've seen a Domino's pizza truck delivering pizza to a temporary fishing hut on the lake in subzero weather :-)

Full Disclosure: Below -10 F, your nose hairs freeze solid within 2 breaths. And going back inside, your glasses fog over and then the condensation FREEZES on the glass :-)

I miss Minnesota (the weather, not the taxes!)

Cheers!

Why don't you purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka?

I've had the extreme displeasure of being in sub-zero temps a couple of times in my life and did NOT like it.
I recall that it HURTS. The air stings when you breath, even breathing it through layers of scarves. Nothing is more serene, however, than looking across a snow-covered landscape. Don't get much of that here in Georgia.
