WESTERN reactions to the outcome of the Palestinian election last week came in two varieties: highly negative and decidedly undecided.....
Well, put me in a third camp: I think the sweeping Hamas victory is by far the best result that could have been hoped for.
I say that not because Hamas is anything other than a blood-drenched terrorist group, but because its lopsided win is an unambiguous reality check into the nature of Palestinian society. And if there is one thing that the West badly needs, it is more realism and less delusion about the Palestinians.

Yeah its a good thing Hamas is in power....will make it much easier for Israel now. After they are done killing each other Israel can move in and clean up the mess and have a lot less bombers to contend with.
It is now absolutely impossible for any around-the-campfire Kumbaya-singer to have any illusions at all about what the Civilized World now must contend with, as the newest officially elected ally of Syria, Iran and North Korea has been anointed.
The Civilized world faces a horrible choice today, or an immeasurably greater, more horrible choice tomorrow.
Absolutely. Bush is brilliant. Bring democracy to an area where the people have a terrorist mentality and the well known Arab temperament and badda bing, badda bang, they start killing each other off until there are no Arabs left or another Saddam Hussein comes along and gets them under control.

It's good to read pundits (like Jacoby, conservatives all) who are in touch with reality.
"Until it is decisively defeated and thoroughly detoxified, the Palestinian people will never enjoy the blessings of liberty and decent governance. Ironically, the ascendancy of Hamas may have brought that day a little closer."
But this still seems like wishful thinking anyway. How can they be defeated, aside from killing all the Palestinians? (which no one in the international arena is proposing, I realize the idea has some popularity on this web site.) How could it be detoxified?
The reason people keep engaging in wishful thinking about the Palestinians is not because it's hard to see what they're like. It's because no one can figure out what to do about them when they are the way they are---so we wish they were different.
