THE NEW CARS GET ROLLING:
The New Cars featuring Todd Rundgren have performed their first gig, rehearsing in California. The TR Connection website lists the set list as follows:
Just What I Needed . Let's Go . You're All I Got Tonight . You Might Think . Best Friends Girl . I Saw The Light . Candy-O . Not Tonight . Drive . Moving in Stereo . Shake It Up . Dangerous Type . Bye Bye Love . Encore: Open My Eyes . Good Times Roll.
The first new song from the guys is the rather good sounding Not Tonight.

This is like Paul McCartney taking over lead singing duties for The Who.
The Cars were my favorite band during the late 70s to early 80s. Not a bad track on any of their albums. I even liked "Door To Door." But I just can't imagine them with a different lead singer.
There is actually a quote to this effect somewhere from a music beat writer. The gist was that fans of hard rock, new wave and other forms of rock all liked The Cars. They had this ability to transcend the rock / pop divide.
Good idea but not possible. The Who were so loud you could feel your lungs being compressed and your ears blowing wax out. I was unable to hear for over a day. Wishbone Ash and Status Quo were other bands that were just as loud.
Well Ocasek did write some great music....

LOL! I LOVE the cars in a totally cheesy 80s way- and that is one of the greatest mysteries to me as well and yet one of the things I think about everytime I hear about the Cars- "Ric Ocasek is married to that babe!" LOL!
I think an original band composed of Rundgren and two members of The Cars would have gotten plenty of press by itself, without resorting to using the Cars name. They could do Cars stuff and Rundgren stuff in concert, and record originals under their new name. What's not to like? I don't think a lot of thought went into this.
BTW, Rundgren's band Utopia made some very good records.

I can't believe someone with Rundgrens talent would even agree to be in the same room with that bunch of talentless geeks, much less appear on stage with them.
Music in the 1970s sucked in general, and The Cars sucked in particular.

I agree with everything you said except the `70`s. The Cars were `80`s. They were part of the "New wave" abomination in the `80`s.. New wave which was a corporate MTV term for watered down punk. I never got them as well, Ric sings like a retard and if I hear "Let the good times roll" one more time on my radio I am going to smash it. That or "Don`t bring me down" by ELO. My God, there are so many damn songs out there that are just mind blowingly phenomenal, yet everytime I hear a oldies station they always play the same garbage like this Cars crap or ELO. Why don`t they try the "Wanton song" by Led Zep for once or some Jim Croce for once who you never ever hear, stuff like " I got a name" or even Terry Jacks "Seasons in the sun" lol! Really, you never hear that stuff. It`s always "Let the god times roll" which I assume is because Ichabod Ocasek is VP of Electra records. Another mystery of Ichabod... He gets the gorgeous model and the VP position yet he`s about as ugly as you can get and his songs sound like chewing gum commercials.
There were a few good bands back then, but The Cars weren't one of them. They're on my top ten list of bands that I despise. Them and Boston....and REO Speedwagon, ...and ELO, and Warrant...and Poison....and Ratt...and Great White.
There were a few bright spots in the 80's. The Furs were good, so was Cabaret Voltaire. OMD wasn't all that bad. Van Halen hit their stride in the 80s, and Aerosmith cleaned up their act, literally.
Frank Zappa was at the peak of his career back then IMO.
But, by and large music in the 80s was a vast wasteland. The Cars epitomized it.

I was talking about this with a friend of mine a few weeks ago and whether or not you liked John Lennon, right after Lennon was shot, I mean right to the second, music immediately went down hill.
Christopher Cross was named best new artist, best song (Sailing) best album, by the Grammys (gee he went far after that didn`t he?), and at that same time REO Speedwagon was constantly constantly constantly being played non-stop and nobody could understand why because they sucked beyond belief, I remember. I was 17 years old at the time and you could tell something had changed for the worse, then it got even worse.. next year MTV came out in 1981 and we had "Video kiled the radio star" by the Buggles being played non-stop, then it got even worse with the Madonna music holocaust, and my theory is when Lennon was alive he was a bigmouth. He would not hesitate to call a band or a singer crap, and if you were a band in the `70`s back then, having a Beatle call you crap was the kiss of death so a lot of these bands really pushed themselves. When he was shut up all the idiots were set loose.
Yes there was a lot of crap in the `70`s, but not nearly as much as the `80`s. With the `80`s it was ALL bad. Bruce Springsteen becoming a superstar? WHAT? He was an absolute joke before MTV, one of those dudes who sang lame originals in a dive. I saw him once in 1979 and me and my friends got bored and left.
It even happened with the big names; The Rolling Stones put out "Tattoo you" in 1980 which pretty much was their last good album, and Paul McCartneys last big hit was in 1980 with "Coming up". Both of these guys after Lennon was wacked put out absolute crap there after. So, thank you Mark Chapman for destroying my radio.
Lennon was a bonafide pinko which is what his commie song "Imagine" is really about, but the guy was an absolute genius in music, wrote some incredible stuff and my theory is a lot of people looked up to him and were pushed by him conciously or subconciously.
When he was wacked that was all destroyed now we are back where we were before Lennon, back to "How much is that doggie in the window" type of banality.
The punk movement was about the only good thing to come out of the 80s IMO. The Ramones just about single handedly saved the American music scene if you ask me.
I walked out of an Aerosmith concert in the 80s because they were so frigging stoned they couldn't remember their own tunes. Now, you could like The Cramps or you could hate the Cramps but they never forgot their own stuff.
And the Dead Kennedys, now there was a breath of fresh air. And who can forget Black Flag? Or the Meat Puppets? Now bands like that made you want to go out and buy a guitar for Gods sake...
Oh well...these days we get Pink Floyd melodies in elevators. What a world, what a world....

Oh man, I loved all that stuff! I was literally right there in CBGB`s in the late `70`s when that whole scene started, that slam dancing stuff... The UK Subs were playing and me and my friend thought a fight had broke out, I remember it to this day clear as day, I was holding a bottle of Bud (underage drinker lol) and when the UK Subs came on this guy plowed into me and I dropped my beer and it smashed, and I was freaking out because I thought this massive fight had started, then I saw nobody was getting hit.. it was all just pushing and shoving and it was a pissa! At that age it was incredible, you could do anything.
I remember one week me and my friends got so rowdy they threw us out lol! Bounced out of CBGB`s! The guy threw us out of the back door, and there was no exit, so we had to climb over this wall onto E.1st street. Oh man, those were the days. That place was insane, you would have to walk backstage to go to the bathroom and walk down these stairs, and you would literally be pizzing next to Johnny Thunders or Henry Rollins. One gig I really regret missing in that place is Nirvana before they got big, that must have been mind blowing.
I also saw the Police play there but at the time we didn`t know who they were, we just thought it was "The Ace" from Quadraphenia and we wanted them to play the Who.
Yeah man, all those great bands back then, and they were all pushed aside for the MTV garbage which is still going on to this day, and if you can believe it CBGB`s is now on the verge of being closed down so NYU which owns it can probably sell it off for dormitories or condos (although they say it is to make more homeless shelters..Yeeeeah riiight!)
I have said the same thing about CCR. They were never anyone's favorite band, but everyone liked them and no one would protest if you put on one of their albums or cranked it up when a song of theirs came on the radio.
