You are right of course, but it is going to be a difficult problem (obesity ) to solve. Part of the problem is, we have a lot of money, and so many, high fat foods have never been so cheap or so plentiful. In time people will adapt to the new situation and we will get our eating under control, in the short term, not letting fat become totally acceptable will help.

There are probably thousands of diets out there that work. The problem is will power and self control. Stomach stapling is living proof that eating less (cuz ya gtta) dramatically causes weight loss.
