January 27, 2006 | Argh

Posted on 01/27/2006 1:47:08 AM PST by Argh

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of four "Words for the Day".

1. whinge [pronounced (h)winj, verb, from Old High German winson, to moan]
to whine or whimper

2. Half-baked Friday word: wingding [noun, origin unknown according to Webster’s]
a. slang: a nervous seizure or attack induced by narcotics
b. a pretended fainting fit or illness
c. a fit of rage: tantrum
d. a spree
e. a wild or lively or lavish party
f. slang: a social affair or gathering (Years ago, one might have referred to a series of proms and wingdings one’s frat was giving)

3. winze [pronounced winz, noun, from Old high German wunsken, wish ]
a curse

4. scovy [pronounced SKOE-vee, adjective, probably Scandinavian in origin, from skafa, to scrape ]
blotchy, smeared

Example sentence:
Another time.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using one or more of the Words for the Day in one or more sentences.
The sentences must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

It has warmed up very nicely here. We were about to head out and Jax and coolbreeze went out to the barn to lock it up.........and the kittens were definitely trying to tell them something.

We've been missing one of them for a few days now, well, unfortunately the others were trying to tell us they knew where she was. Fortunately the ground is not frozen, as another one is being buried right now. Jax is practically unconsolable at the moment. It seems like a box of siding fell on the poor thing in the barn.

I'm totally heartbroken because my baby is so sad and is blaming herself.

oh that is sad! you know, i don't care for cats, but the demise of anything like that just makes me sad. did the other kitties take them to the poor little sis??

i know you feel about jax, too. xshub put xsteen's fish down the garbage disposal by mistake, when she was 6 yo. he was just cleaning the fish bowl and scooped the thing and it slipped. she was beside herself. this after we had gone through pretense after pretense of fish being "hospitalized" for various ailments (while xshub would go buy a replacment fish).

OH poor xsteen.............and poor xshub.

Jax is really upset, but I did get a smile from her when I suggested that after we get the canning jars I need we pop around the corner and get milkshakes!!!!

She is also rather pragmatic..........she just informed us that we really shouldn't have any more gray striped kittens, as this is the second one of that color we have lost..........

She has been properly buried and the spot marked with a clam shell with her name on it.

Opening your top (er, flashing your van) in public is always good.

(But Arghy already knew that. He just didn't want to bead you to the punchline.)

It is DANG cold here. Notice the tag line. I do not want to hear how warm it is down there.

BTW, the daughter has landed a decent job..used her resume and all. We are relieved. For now anyway.

She had been waitressing, which is fine. Now she has been hired nine to five hours doing data entry. Not much of a job considering she has finished two years of college, but better than waitressing. She will be able to make the rent in San Jose on that.

Did I mention it was colder than hillary's backside here in NY?

Hubby and I are headed out to our leisurely weekly lunch. BBL -dang spell check tells me waitressing is not a word.....sigh

It is 68 and finally clearing here-the rain finally stopped at about 1:30. I'm about finished with the laundry, I've got a meatloaf ready to put in the oven for dinner and I've brought in wood for a fire tonight-it is supposed to get down into the 30's.

The battles and their strategies in "The Sword at Sunset" are as riveting and detailed as I remember-and it is still one of the saddest portraits ever of a disfunctional arranged marriage, whether it was fiction or fact. I'd forgotten how sad that aspect of the story was.

Whyisa, did y'all ever get that rain? The radar map at weather underground showed it moving due south toward Corpus Christi and Brownsville the last time I looked.

I'm so sorry to hear about the kitten-the way they investigate everything, they just seem to invite hazards.

the Texasgirl is not flashing anyone in Texas - it was the PA girl turned Virginian that was flashing. Just wanted to set the record straight Robert.
