Falcons' QB Vick defends his troubled brother(rules apply to others only)

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick believes Virginia Tech overreacted when the school dismissed his brother, Marcus, from the football team after he stomped on an opposing player during the Gator Bowl.

Marcus Vick later claimed the incident was accidental and that he apologized to Louisville's Elvis Dumervil, but the All-American defensive end denied receiving an apology.

Michael Vick, who led Virginia Tech to the 1999 national title game as a redshirt freshman, was at the Gator Bowl and saw his brother step on Dumervil.

"Sometimes your emotions just take over," Michael Vick said during halftime Wednesday night of the Atlanta Hawks' game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. "I know Marcus. He's not the kind of kid that's going to do something like that on purpose. That's just something he's got to live with, and now it's just time to move on."

Marcus Vick's Gator Bowl antics came after he received a speeding ticket on Dec. 17 in Hampton, Va., for driving with a suspended license.

He had been under a "zero tolerance" policy at Virginia Tech following his suspension from the university for the 2004 season after several legal problems.

Earlier this month, just three days after being kicked off the football team, Vick was arrested and charged with pulling a gun on three teenagers in Virginia.

I would expect him to cover his brother. I am certain I would cover mine as well. However......

He's wrong. Totally, completely and unequivocally. He probably knows it too. The only reason Marcus Vick was on the team after his first run-ins with the law was because of the name on the back of his Jersey.

QB's with the running ability of the Vicks and Young are only marginally faster than NFL defenders - even some linemen. They tend to expose such QB's as one-dimensional.

the difference between 4.1 and 4.6 is quite noticable.....

Maybe. VY won't be rushing for 200 yards in the NFL, but he may be able to scramble for key first downs. He may have trouble against good pass coverage--during the Rose Bowl he was throwing to wide open receivers every time and hasn't really been tested--but he might throw well enough, especially if he ends up with a team with a good running threat. QB is the hardest position to transition to from college. He may be a great one, or he may fizzle. I wish him well.

When the LB has the angle on you, 4.6 is noticeable all right. You'll notice that you're coming back to consciousness while looking out the earhole of your helmet. 8^)

I'm not saying that speed isn't a helpful ingredient. What I am saying is that Vick has been a disappointment highlighted by an occasional superhuman play. He needs to become a real QB - his legs aren't going to last forever.

Stay safe, Mike.

you're right, his legs won't last forever, but my guess is that we will see a big improvement in Vick over the next 3 years.

the word out of the Falcons camp is that Vick is much sharper in practice than he is in the games. One person (I can't remember his name but he was on the Eagles staff when they were having the same problems with McNabb) said that Vick is still in the developing stages in his career. We have to remember that although he's been in the league for 5 years, he's ONLY 25.

Vick is still fast enough to outrun the angle BTW. Young isn't and probably little brother Vick isn't, but Michael Vick is the fastest of the 3 anyway.

I'm a Buckeye fan who has the greatest respect for Vince Young. To me , he is a Daunte Culpepper+ but more important what Vince Young brings to the table is he is a winner.

He has that " Tom Brady" intangible of a guy that doesn't quit, doesn't panic and can win the big game in the 4th quarter no matter how tough the opponent.

In a few years football fans will be saying , Vick?, who? about either brother.

On the other hand, I think Vince will be around for a long time and I hope he has a great professional career.

By the way Horns fan, we Buckeyes are coming into your stadium next year. It will be a great game.

Yup, that was a GREAT game last year in Columbus. I look forward Sept. 9th's matchup this year. I think VY is going to prove a lot of people wrong when he finds his groove in the pros. Afterall, most of the ESPN 'experts' have had to gorge themselves on crow since Jan. 4th. Except for Lou Holtz and Lee Corso, all of their resident football 'experts' were wrong about UT and VY.
