Starborn SocietySci-fi isn't just for nerds(Battlestar Galactica Ping)

Science fiction has long been stereotyped as a hardware-obsessed, techno-jargon laden refuge for computer nerds and outcasts. Especially on television, which lacks the geek chic afforded by big-screen Hollywood budgets, the genre's reputation for hokey dialog and cardboard-and-wire effects have saturated it with a distinct odor of disrespectability. It is somewhat ironic, then, to see the Sci-Fi Channel, a network which often seems devoted to the pulpy and lowbrow, serve up Battlestar Galactica, a show about spaceships and killer robots that is also arguably the most potent, dramatically vibrant series on television. An unflinching examination of how the military, government, family, and religion interact in the fragile ecosystem of society, it as morally and intellectually serious as it is thrilling.

I think the problem there was that for a while there was a real possibility that B5 might not be renewed for a fifth season. JMS pushed to get some of the plot threads completed in the fourth just in case there was no renewal which left the fifth season feeling a bit empty.

The last episode (the conclusion of the two commanders trying to kill each other) was about the most serious piece of drama I've seen on TV in a very long time.

Their direction is excellent. The two opposing squadrons of vipers dancing around each other was stressful, the radio chatter really making an impact on the emotions of the scene. You could see the whole thing was an accident waiting to happen, which would trigger a shooting war. High stakes indeed.

And did anyone see that move for strafing the ressurection ship? Get your momentum forwards, maneuver jet 90 degrees to the right, and strafe as you fly sideways. This is the only show since 2001: A Space Odyssey I've seen that tries to get flight physics in space right.

Dunno. There is a lotta "over the top" drama. For soldiers, some of 'em have really poor impulse control.
Also, If'n I was in Adama's position, I would have conscripted ALL of the refugees (take THAT Zarek!); informed 'em that food, water and air are not free, esp. in space; and that every last on of 'em is gonna work for their own survival and the survival of the species. (Besides, the Devil makes work for idle hands...)
Orders will come down regarding their future dispostion. Recruiters will be vistin' to evaluate skills and potential of all recruits. It would be useful to have a resume handy...
Anyone choosing to opt out may leave their ship via the nearest airlock. Friendly marines will be happy to help you find them.

Nice listing of third rate sci-fi series, fortunately they have been replaced by Stargate and Battlestar. Excellant shows vastly superior to the ones you listed.

Either you dont watch the show, or you are gay-nuts. Neither Starbuck or Roslin are gay.

"More often than not, there's better fare on the History Channel than Sci-Fi."

Most of the stuff on the History Channel is sci-fi.

Not in any unit I was in. Maybe the Air Force or Navy is different?
Poor impulse control, combined with firearms is a BAD thing...

Man, you must be on soemthing really, really mind-blowingly good to come up with that list! And you forget to include Babylon 5 as one of the all time classic Sci-Fi shows!

But then again, after reading the BSG DVD reviews on Amazon.com, I guess you are one of the 1 in 20 people that doesn't like the new show. I love it. It finally has real character development, doesn't depend on the techno-babble toy-du-jour to save the day and it doesn't press the reset button before the next episode. But then again, someone has to be buying all the Star Wars pulp lining the shelves at Barnes and Noble.
