I've got Das Boot for tonight.

Ooh, good movie! I actually first saw it in a theater during its original release. I was in college at the time, and because of a special deal with the German Club they had a couple of showings in the original German with subtitles.

Useless bit of trivia: Jurgen Prochnow's character in the German version is referred to as "Herr Kaleun" (pronounced ka-loin). Our German instructor (and she was actually a native of Germany who had emmigrated to the U.S.) didn't know what this word meant. It wasn't his name, and it wasn't any rank that she was familiar with. She finally found the answer in a dictionary of obscure German technical terms: "Kaleun" is actually a contraction of Kapitan-Leutnant. It seems that the German Navy often used ranks less than full Captain (Kapitan) to command subs and smaller ships. So his actual rank was Leutnant, but because he was in command he was an honorary "Kapitan". The Germans being the sticklers they are, couldn't just call him "Kapitan" though, and "Kapitan-Leutnant" was just to long to say every time, so it got contracted into "Kaleun".

'Course, if you don't watch it in German with subtitles, that whole little story I just recited is totally pointless.

There's a lot to be said for making sure to watch Das Boot in German, maybe with subtitles... but they aren't really needed. Sorta like how you can watch The Passion in Aramaic without missing anything.

It'd be like watching Patton dubbed into German... ? :-)

This, however, is an atrocity:

The Jeep Compass. Some designer should lose his thumbs for that one. Is it just me... or does it look like a 4x4 Pacer?

Looks like somebody stepped on the Commander. :-)

Evenin' everyone!

2J - I wonder what that purple carrot would taste like with the new purple ketchup.

Jen & Talon - pushing back the wedding date is harder on you than it is on us. *grin*

XGI - I'll take that cup of coffee! I owe ya a quarter. ;-)

Oh and I might as well admit that I've never seen Das Boot. Or Doctor Zhivago. Actually, I haven't watched MOST of the old, great flicks out there. :-/

I watched Casablanca for the first time at Entmoot.

I've got Das Boot for tonight.Somehow I doubt it has a happy ending. It doesn't :-(

OB is at a night meeting, I've got the VCR set to tape E-Ring at 7 and Lost at 8. Going to try to stop during the commercials but I'm also going to be rolling our smokes, so I hope I don't grab the wrong piece of equipment!!!

I like those round yellow cucumbers, too. Lemon cukes? Can't remember the name. There was a guy at the farmer's market that sold them. He had a few other oddities, too...purple string beans, for one, though I guess those are pretty common. And there are round zucchini, too.

I once saw Star Wars (IV) dubbed in Korean...C3PO sounded like the monotonal femalish computer on Star Trek TOS only in Korean.

Try The Maltese Falcon. A lot of the same people. Peter Lorre gets more, and better, screen time. Alas, no Ingrid (who was just too purty).
