But some folks like fried pickles, so why would a cuke be any different? I don't like the idea of fried pickles either, so there's that.

I always liked fried yellow squash, and fried zukes are good, but my favorite is fried OKRA!! I could eat it like popcorn!!

No, his family name was actually Butt:

In 1905, Charles C. and Florence Butt moved their three sons from Memphis, Tennessee, to Kerrville in the Texas Hill Country. With an initial investment of only $60, Florence opened the C.C. Butt Grocery Store on November 26.

The youngest son, Howard E., became intrigued with the grocery business. He took over the family business in 1919, upon his return from World War I. In 1924, he expanded the Butt Grocery Company with a new store in Junction, about 60 miles from Kerrville. Howard's motto was, "He profits most who serves best."

Charles, the youngest son of Howard E. Butt, became president of the H.E. Butt Grocery Company in 1971. Today, Charles Butt is chairman and CEO of H-E-B, having grown the business from sales of $250 million in 1971 to $11 billion in 2003.

Florence Butt opened her first store with a set of beliefs that were passed on to her sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons. Good principles and a can-do attitude, whether times are good or bad, are at the heart of H-E-B's success.

David enjoys shopping at HEB. Almost every time he calls home he's grocery shopping there, or he's at Tarzhay, or waiting at the bus stop. He also likes Whole Foods, but I think it is more difficult for him to get there on the bus.

When I was in junior high school (middle school to you young'uns), the school administration opened up a second bokroom as a store. They sold popular candies and snacks from this (probably) highly illegal store --- M&Ms, Lik-M-Aid Dips, All-Day Suckers, etc.

Shut up, dwarves!

But by far the most popular snack was a heinous pairing, a combination of two things that should never have been combined. They sold pickles, those huge sour kosher dills that come in a big jar:

The store also sold Grasshopper Candies --- candy sticks six inches long and the circumference of a pencil. There were a lot of flavors, but I favored lemon, lime, and grape.

Sick children that we were, we would unwrap the Grasshoppers, bite one end off a brand-new pickle, and push the Grasshopper down into the middle of the pickle. If you got the right pickle, you could bury all but the tail end of the Grasshopper in the middle of the pickle.

And then, we would lick, savoring the mix of sour and sweet. Some people would salt the candy-stuffed pickle's surface, for another tastebud experience. This evil lasted all day, and sometimes we would even take them home, where our parents would throw them out.

Oh, the evil of the Seventies!

Had a major setback on my report so today will be a struggle to not be too grumpy about that. Tooo much to do. Toooo little time to do it. But at least its a long weekend for us Feds so maybe I can get the house clean.

I gots a 3-day weekend too. Was planning on finally getting to the yard work. Fortunately we're s'posed to get rain/snow again.

Do you remember when they sold those giant dill pickles at the movies, sitting on a bed of shaved ice? Those things were HUGH and only cost $.05!!

I've never liked kosher pickles; something odd about the flavor. Maybe it's the garlic with the brine, I don't know, but it is almost impossible to find just plain old dill pickles up here. They're either kosher, or garlic, or something or the other. Every now and then, Vlasic has a particular kind I like. When I find them I'll buy several jars. I like em in chicken salad.

Are you going to Iowa? It is gonna be deep freeze temps there this weekend, I hear. We're supposed to get down to under 10 tomorrow night. Brrrr.

It's almost 50 out there right now, and we've got high wind warnings all day. I guess this is the leading edge of that cold front that's already hit the midwest.

SirKit finally made it home about 7 this morning. His flight out of CA last night was delayed a bit. He brought me a cup of coffee and woke me up so I could get Joseph to school, then he crashed. I have to wake him up at 1 so he can go into the office for a little while this afternoon. This week was so busy for him, he's looking forward to the long weekend.
