The Hobbit Hole XXVII - And there are many paths to tread...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 01/16/2006 6:56:15 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And there are many paths to tread

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

ecurbh and I are sitting and setting your priorities for the place, and what we need to do to get you feeling secure and home there...

I think in addition to cleaning, a first priority will be a workable perimeter fence with a gate. I highly recommend compound living :~D

I even have an extra fence charger, we can do field fence with a hot wire on top of it. :~D

No potatoes, just Sam... Sean Astin is playing a new character on the show.

The live thread has nicknamed his character "Rudy", by the way.

Hmm, did they have two prop palantirs on the set then? One "regular sized" and one "Hobbit sized"?

I very much like that idea. It'd be a lot of work, but it sure would make me feel better about the place, being alone and all. Not to mention it *could* pave the way (maybe) for other pets (maybe) someday. Which would also help with feeling secure, though of course that's not a sole reason for havin' 'em...

Fencing is another thing where it'd be awfully nice if the landlord would be willing to help with expenses. But I wonder what his limitations are, just practically speaking.

A fence just ain't a fence unless it's electric.

We'll probably rent one of these to make it a one-weekend project.

I don't know if he'd see the value in it to him, I'd focus on basics.... but putting up a basic field fence would not be all that expensive and ecurbh and I know how to do it. It can be done if phases too... first the two sides that are exposed to the store and road, and then later the rest. Field fence is $100 or so for 330 feet.. just add posts and a gate.

That wouldn't be too bad, then! Would you just use that wire stuff that comes in rolls? Rabbit wire type stuff? Like I used for the dogs? I can't remember if I ever posted pictures of it. We didn't exactly do a great job, but it wasn't horribly expensive, I don't think.

Ooh...power post hole digger?

That could be fun. I've dug post holes by hand before...would rather not repeat the experience, and I only hadda do four or so.
