I figure if nothing else, there should be a way to plant some flowers along that front edge. Granted, there's a lot of crap to clean up first...but it's doable, I think. Especially if I beg, borrow or steal some bricks or cinderblocks to do a raised bed, or make planters outta some of the tires. Could work!
Paint over 'em, you mean? Do you think it would take paint?
If it could be done over in a lighter color...it'd really open the place up, I'd think - make it look bigger and brighter.

They look pretty good on the page, though I dunno that anything *I* did would come out like that. Gotta be pretty hard to cut reinforced rubber evenly without killing yourself.
What kind of soil do they have around there? You could always dig a place. You'd have to kill the grass first, though. Just put some plastic or newspaper down and leave it until the grass dies.

From the pictures, it looks a little sandy, but I guess it's hard to tell from a picture.
I just thought of the tire planters since there are a ton of tires in the heap o' crap that got left behind.
That's the kinda set-up I'd love to have someday! Not on quite the same scale, but at least a few good beds!
Well if you've got all those tires, that's a good use for them.
I planted some onions last year....dang squirrels dug 'em up.
I count eleven in the one picture, and I don't think that's even all of 'em. Eek!
Probably don't need *that* many, but it might be nice to use a few around the door. And if they weren't horribly hard to do, a few scattered around would be nice. But I dunno. Seems like rubber would be really hard to cut, so maybe it's not really practical.
You can plant taters in tires, Precious. Just put a tire down, fill it with soil, stick the taters in. When the taters come up, stick another tire on top, fill it up with soil. Keep going and keep going. Then let the plant grow. When it starts to die, take all the tires apart and tadahhhh, taters.
Do you have to cut 'em?
How 'bout if you made a square- 3 tires by 3 tires - plant inside the square also inside each tire.
I looked that up a few weeks ago, and some folks were concerned about chemicals from the tires leeching into the taters. I suppose it's probably no more dangerous than whatever chemicals they use in commercial gardening, but it did make me wonder.
I should Google it again. I loves taters...
I wonder...that might could work. Wouldn't quite make a square, but it would be close. Could make a nice bed! Could plant marigolds and such in the tires and veggies in the bed.
I think the only concern would be making sure they were filled with dirt, or you get skeeters.
Sure - you can paint paneling... in fact, some of the paneling in the kitchen in that place has been painted. It works fine to paint it.
As for the ground, it's variable there... most of the soil here is sandy, with some bands that are a little rocky and compacted where cars have parked. But a garden can definitely go right in the ground... probably easiest to rent a rototiller to churn it up.
It doesn't really have to be a square as long as it's a closed shape and will hold dirt.
