The Hobbit Hole XXVII - And there are many paths to tread...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 01/16/2006 6:56:15 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And there are many paths to tread

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Gak.. Oh dear... Remember Dona's old dog Zak? He was around at the wedding, I think, and probably seemed like he was on his last legs then... Well, he had hung on till now, but she had him put down yesterday.

Well, I started searching for just the right verse to send to her, and in browsing through the hundreds of dog loss poems there are out there, I've been bawling for over an hour for the love of old dogs... And I ended up sending one of my favorites that I always liked in the first place. But now I feel like I've been hit repeatedly in the gut and my eyes are puffy.

Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Aww... [[Hair]]

They do become sooo important to us, don't they? I still worry about my old lab and how things might have been different if I'd been able to have her with me rather than her being at the house. I don't know that she'd have been much healthier under my care, but...I think about it.

Same goes for the little ankle-biters. *sigh*

And yet, I still dream of the day I can have one again. I was looking at petfinder.org this weekend. I shouldn't do that.

Two o'clock. I have to call *them*, which I guess at least saves me the stress of waiting for the phone to ring, but...

Ah - well, good luck with that then!

I guess I can't promise the place and the deal would last till April, but I see no sign that he's going to do anything quickly about the place... seein' as how they've been gone nearly a month and he hasn't had the curiosity yet to look inside it :~D

But I hope it is. April is a good time to come here. Only a die-hard moves to WA in January.

Floormats are a must-have.

Never had mudflaps on my truck, so I don't know what I'd be missing.

What purpose do they serve other than to have nekkid lady profiles on?

*hugs* There's no easy way around grief, chica.

I can't dwell too long on memories of Dino, Pudgy or Tequila for fear I'll end up in that same state.

Stupid dogs. Why do they have to be so loveable?

Hermit crabs are better. Can't get too attached to them.

Yeah, if this job comes through, maybe I should talk to him and see what he says about timing.

And it may or may not come through anyway. So...we shall see.

I'm not so much worried about WA in January as I am about Wyoming and Idaho in January. Lotta mountains and potential iffy weather on the way.

No! Don't look there!
Been there, done that. It only makes you want one more.

Unfortunately, that only makes them "better" in one sense... ;-)

I want a lab again. Possibly a Golden or a mix...but I did love my lab. Though, if I ever do have a dog again, I may well get an adult from the pound, so who knows what could happen? The only worry I'd have there would be whether or not they'd know how to act around cats. And I guess that's a pretty big worry.

Tell me about it.

For just one example, in Hair's area, look at the face on this little gal. *melts*

Do you have any kinda feel for what timeframe he was thinking of?

Thinking...if I'm really gonna do this, and I'm all but convinced, maybe I need to get started on the whole process and stop trying much to make more connections here...

I was happy to see my dog doing very well back in TX. She is really mom's dog these days but was mine before I moved away from home. Since they are keeping up her meds for her bad back she seems many years younger. She was trying to keep up with my sisters' dogs as they were rough housing. Not doing all that well but she sure was trying. They are both a lot bigger so it was kinda worrying to see. Occasionally one of them would knock her down a bit but they were both considerate enough to not really play back when she tried to join in. They know she really can't take it. Last Christmas before they put her on med she seemed to be on her last legs, barely getting up at all and making messes constantly. Now other than being stone deaf and a little stiff she is like her old self again. Halley is about 12 and a half.

Maybe you can answer my nosy question that Jen couldn't remember the answer to...

She said Empress' dog is a flat-coated retriever, but she couldn't remember what kinda dog your other sister's was. I'm just curious. ;-) She said they were both reallly purty dogs.

I know. Can't snuggle with a hermie unless you want a pinched face. :-D

I do have one hermit crab who I nicknamed "Bubba". He's HUGE!

And not scared of me one bit. When I stick my hand in there to feed them, he comes charging from the other side of the tank and taps my fingers away from the shell so that I'll move out of the way.

He's always hungry. He always needs to feed. *grin*

Reminds me of my Scruffy. He's 12 too.

Rimadyl keeps the arthitis bearable for him.
