The Hobbit Hole XXVII - And there are many paths to tread...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 01/16/2006 6:56:15 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And there are many paths to tread

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Do you like to fish? I mean, with a pole and such...

Bought most of my flower seeds already. Guess it's too late to consult the plant list for the hobbit garden. :)

One problem I have is that I've got a downspout draining right where I want to put in a walkway. There's English Ivy around it now. I'm thinking of putting a little rock garden there.

Raised beds, sis...it's the way to go. Did you see Lil'freeper's raised bed gardens?

They're great.

Start ordering all kinds of seed catalogs...just have 'em delivered to Hair's house. Then when you get there, you can look at seed catalogs and dream!

I love it. Been looking at the Seed Saver's Exchange catalog I got today. I want a cantaloupe called "Hearts of Gold".

Ya know what I think would be really cool? I'd love it if for the new place, I could get everyone to pick some sort of flower seed that would be pretty easy to grow and send it to me. Could do a Hobbit Hole garden using just those.

OK, so it's a quirky idea.

Rock gardens are nice! Hens and chicks grow good in rock gardens don't they? They may not flower, but I like 'em.

Haven't been fishing since I was a kid.

And those fish samples from Oak Ridge pretty much killed my appetite for fresh-caught fish. :)

I wonder if there might be someone who would have cinderblocks they weren't using. Possibly if I put an ad on Craig's List or a free stuff paper there, I'd be able to get some for almost nothing.

It'd be nice!

What fish samples??

I love catfish. Steve thinks I'm crazy, having grown up on the Great Lakes and fishing the lakes of Minnesota.

I don't care. I like catfish.

I did that with no success on Tulsa Freecycles.

Should try again though...you never know!

I gotta go! Steve'll be home soon with the jedis.

See you all later, maybe! If not, have a safe and fun trip in the morning, Ruthy!

I need to put a walk of some sort from the driveway to the gate. I don't like the idea of the downspout draining across the walk, but then I guess it doesn't really matter except in freezing weather.

Since that picture, I've painted the gate white.

Some fish samples we had to analyze at werk quite a few years ago...looking for contaminants

Hey howdy there! :-)

All packed? Sleepy yet?

OK, I'm officially done packing. :-D

Laundry's done. The girls have their clothes laid out for school the next 2 days and bags packed for the weekend.

It was a ~very~ long day. I'm tired, but not sleepy.

I've already drank my tea and waiting for LOST to start.

heh, well, if it's too dry, you won't have to worry about the rain garden attracting 'skeeters'.

OT - consider the rock garden to be your naturalized energy diffuser; reduces the hydraulic effect of the concentrated flow from the downspout and allow the rainwater to seek it's own path into the yard.

Have you got three alarm clocks... one of which is a wind-up in case the power goes out?

:-)
