“This thread is the most fun on FR and this season is almost over.....makes me sad. :-( ”

the next Idol is only seven months away… we can meet again in January…:)

“Great! That’s what I wanted to hear.”

.

This thread is dedicated to the one person who would have enjoyed it most

Tammy Gammon

She was a good influence here, but more than that, she was a good friend

If you had doubts, she would give encouragement

If you needed to talk, she would listen

There wasn’t anything that she wouldn’t do for a friend,
and God blessed us all with a friendship like hers

We miss you, Tammy

You were a real Texas flower

“Texasflower helped make the AI threads so much fun. She always made me smile. FR will not be the same without her.” ~ Retrokitten

“I simply adored her ability to butt heads and loved reading her posts. She was always there with the perfect hug or hatpin, whichever she felt was most deserved.” ~ Doodlelady

“The sweetest, funniest, kindest poster on the AI threads where I had the honor of ‘meeting’ her.” ~ Jrabbit

“Texasflower was an integral part of our ‘American Idol’ gang. She was always sweet and upbeat and kind to all.” ~ Palladin

“In the beginning of November I was thinking about her because the town I work in was having their elections and it reminded me about her Dad going to vote in the ambulance … I loved her and miss her.” ~ No More Apples

“She was unfailingly polite, and more than that. Kind, thoughtful, patriotic, encouraging. A blessing. She was one of my most favorite FReepers, and I do not say that very often. She was exceptional.”

“We never truly know how deeply our lives touch others. I certainly never communicated fully to Tammy how much her posts lifted me up, and I regret that. I assumed she would continue to be there and I would be able to keep responding to her appreciatively.

“We will know in heaven the effect of our lives, when everyone gathers around the Lamb's throne and all our hearts are open and all our secrets known, and we have till forever to tell one another how God blessed us through each other …” ~ GretchenM

Remember the bald guy who goes under the monicker -- SWAY ? He sang "Superstar" and was let through unanimpusly by the judges... well, he might be disqualified....

http://www.realitytvmagazine.com/blog/2006/01/jose_sway_penal.html

Jose “Sway” Penala, Is He American Idol’s Next Big Controversy?

It’s no secret that many of the contestants that audition for American Idol aren’t exactly amateur singers. Many contestants have either been on other singing competition shows or have had albums released at some time in the past. In fact, both Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood from American Idol 4 had recorded CDs before their time on American Idol.

On IdolonFox.com, the question of contestants with professional music experience is addressed. Basically, the answer is “in order to be eligible, the contestants are not permitted to have any CURRENT recording or talent management agreements.” So if someone recorded a CD in the past, then they are still eligible.

Of course this explanation does not explain the case of Jose “Sway” Penala, who made it through to Hollywood in the San Francisco auditions. Sway wowed the judges with a rendition of “Superstar” by Luther Vandross. Sway is a 27 year old from South San Francisco, California.

Information that can easily be found via the Internet also reveals that Sway is a member of a group called 6th Day. According to a MySpace.com page for the band, 6th Day released for sale a CD called “Forever Starts Today” on BrownJungle.com in September of 2005. The MySpace.com page also claims 6th Day has a deal with what the site describes as a "major" record label called E-Real Records. E-Real Records still lists the band 6th Day on their roster on their website.

So maybe Sway quit the band and his record label before the American Idol auditions? The only problem with this theory is that the American Idol auditions started in San Francisco on August 18, 2005 and a September 21, 2005 article on titik Pilipino still lists Jose Penala as a member of 6th Day and reports that the band was doing Mall shows in Manila.

Could being part of 6th Day result in Sway’s disqualification? What if Sway becomes a big hit on American Idol, and his group’s CD starts selling like crazy? Would American Idol producers have concerns over promoting an artist with a current CD that they wouldn’t have a piece of? Or did Sway free himself of any current recording or talent management agreements in order to qualify for American Idol? Rumors are starting to buzz that Sway could be disqualified, but nothing has been stated by anyone official connected to American Idol to suggest that he is at any risk. Sway seems to be a big hit with fans as Internet fan sites for him have already sprung up. Assuming that Sway makes it to the viewer voting stage of the competition, he could do very well on American Idol.

My thoughts after the first elimination round :

I loved:

* Mandisa - she looked great, sounded great, and kicked ass on a tough song.

* Katherine - She toned down the melisma, and sounded great. Vocally, the most well trained of the bunch and it shows. Shoulda chosen to try Barbra's HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN to really highlight her abilities instead of this one.

* Ayla - I really didn't expect to like her (especially when I heard what song she'd be doing), but I think she did a surprisingly good job with it. I'm Pleasantly surprised.

* Paris - the outfit, the hair... all very retro 70s. Her dancing was a bit over the top, but I loved it. Paris is Fantasia with the better personality.

* Lisa - Yeah, so she smiled too much. But she kicked ass vocally. What stage presence for someone so young !

The disappointment was Kellie Pickler. I was kinda rooting for her but she did not do justice to the song.

RANKED ACCORDING TO PERFORMANCE TONIGHT TOP TO BOTTOM :

Katherine Mcphee

Lisa Tucker

Mandisa

Paris Bennett

Ayla Brown

Melissa Mcghee -- Well, she made me like Faith Hill.

Kellie Pickler

Kinnick Sky (like her humble comment about learning from babes)

Heather Cox -- Tried to do a Vonzell, made people miss Vonzell.

Brenna -- I didn't think it was possible to hate her more, but here we are... Horrible performance and my goodness, she has the worst personality I've ever seen. She can't go home soon enough.

Stevie -- Classically trained opera singer ? Where's the technical polish when you need it ? Needs to go back to school.

Katherine McPhee has the best voice, but she's a Barbra Streisand fan. Ugh.

Enjoyed Paris Bennett's performance the most.

Liked Lisa Tucker.

Liked Mandisa.

Liked Ayla Brown but didn't expect to.

Thought Kinnik was decent.

Liked Kellie Pickler considerably less than I expected to.

Stevie Scott tried TOO hard not to be stereotyped as an opera singer. Hope she hangs around long enough to get another chance.

Wasn't impressed with Becky O'Donahue's performance, but she gets an eye candy pass into the next round.

Don't like Brenna's singing but hope she lasts one more week for the "entertainment" value. Sure I'll have seen enough of her by then.

I'd vote off Heather Cox for sure. Just didn't detect any singing talent, and her personality was dull.

By process of elimination I guess Melissa McGhee is my second pick to lose although she has more talent than Brenna.

I hope Taylor Hicks wins, but I don't expect it. He's the only one of the male side that I would even want to listen to.

Randy: I really like you, you’re honestly talented. That was the bomb!

Sang: Copa Cabana
Randy: Doesn’t quite know what to say. Skates around being entertained.
Paula: Tries to be nice. Enjoyed the entertainment value
Simon: Barry Manilow is screaming somewhere. A complete nightmare.

At this point Ryan Seacrest tries to get something constructive out of the judges, to no avail…

11th up: Ace Young
Sang: Father figure.
Randy: You definitely are a star. You knew how to work the room. You can really sing. Oh my gawd! Star and can sing. I’m loving you.
Paula: About 35 million fans can’t vote just yet. Hello to those eyes.
Simon: Not the best vocals. Two others out sung you. You’ve got the ‘X’ factor, that extra special something going for you. Will sail through the next rounds.

Last up: Taylor Hicks

Sang: Levon

Randy: Loved you since day one. Not the perfect song choice. Doesn’t showcase his talent. Loves him though.

Paula: Sputter. You love what you do. We love you for that, you are just amazing. I think we saved the best for last.
Randy pipes in that there has never been anyone like him on the show.

Simon: Repeats that he didn’t think he should make the finals, says he was wrong. He likes that Taylor’s interesting. He has had more positive feedback on Taylor than anyone else on the show.

My vote for boot: Bobby Bennet and Sway Penala

Personal comments/rankings (10 is perfect score) :

Patrick - not bad, not overwhelming, 6/10 Will probably get better. Poor song choice.

David - Poor song choice. I'd like to give him another chance. 4/10

Bucky - Good at what he does, but limited. 5/10, but just for tonight. Plus he needs a haircut, a shower and a beer bottle.

Will - Bobby Brady returns! Actually he was comparatively good. 6.5/10

Jose - Oh sway can you see... bad falsetto? 3/10

Chris - Rocker. But a good one. Love the Bon Jovi. 7.5/10

Kevin - He's still a baby, and it shows when he sings. But man, close your eyes and he's got a good radio voice. 6/10

Gedeon - aka "Smiley". Shouting out at 7/10, but with some annoying mannerisms to take it down to 6/10

Elliot - dared Stevie, but did well. Needs an extreme dental make-over ( call Lawrence Olivier, is it safe ?) 7/10

Bobby - Sigh. How did he get through ? Totally out of tune. Looks like a fun guy to hang around with though.
2/10. End his misery and let him go.

Ace - Definitely the front leader, even if the name "Ace" seems so pretentious. How can the girls not love this Kevin Sorbo look-alike ? ( mugging for the camera reminds me of Constantine ) 8.5/10

Taylor (Gray Charles) - Soul/music pours out from his veins. Song choice was OK but does not highlight what he's capable of doing. 8/10

I'd rank them (in order): Ace, Taylor, Chris, Elliot, Bucky, Patrick, Smiley Evil Clown Gedeon, Will, Kevin, David, Jose Sway, Bobby.

Guys seem like a more diverse and colorful bunch than the girls.

Easier for me to pick who should be dropped and more difficult for me to pick who was best than it was with the girls.

Performances I enjoyed:

Chris(thought it was more style than substance though)

Taylor(wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped)

Elliot(agree with Simon that the guy can sing)

Will(I enjoy early Jackson 5 songs so that helped him)

Ace(he can sing but I do find a hint of creepiness about him)

Bucky(a bit too imitative but pretty decent)

Gedeon(okay but you gotta REALLY let loose with that song)

Patrick(good voice that's not exactly my cuppa tea but he does have talent. Agree with the judges that he needs better song selection)

On the bubble:

Kevin(could probably make a decent living just singing "Danny Boy" all over the country, but he's limited)

Sway(pretty much hated that performance, but he does have some vocal skill, and I'm interested in hearing what he does next)

Should be gone:

Bobby(brought nothing to the party except a good attitude)

David(gimmick act that's just not good enough at working the gimmick)

Something interesting for everyone in this board to consider. Go to eBay, on the search text, type “TAYLOR HICKS CD”, you’ll see an amazing number of sales ( CAUTION : some are copies ). The astonishing thing is this —- PEOPLE ARE BIDDING AS HIGH AS $56 for his “Under the Radar” CD. The CD only has 7 songs !!

Don't even bother to buy the CD from some retail outlet. It's sold out and the company marketing it is working overtime to bring more out. This of course is a self-produced CD.

Unfreakin’ believable how much people are taking to this man. And to think that he only has about 15 minutes of TV time !

Remember his shout out to the SOUL PATROL ( which had even Ryan Seacrest shoutign with him ?), that's the self proclaimed fan club of Taylor Hicks which has members from all over the world including the Philippines, UK, Mexico and even Canada.

Having listened to his CD, I have become a fan. I'm just torn between voting for him and not. I hope he gets to say, 6th place and then leaves before he gets swalloed by the ridiculous theme nights ( e.g. DISCO) that is sure to come.

I can't stand the thought of him winning this competition and then being locked in to 19 Entertainment's restrictive and uncreative manufactured pop schtick. I want him to create and just be himself instead of going too "commercial". He's got too much BLUES and originality in him that needs to be let out and I don't think Clive Davis can give us that kind of an album.

Eliott Yamin is the perfect example of the saying — DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER.

He has a refreshing motown sound that’s very radio friendly, it’s pure, clear and vibrant. I mean he handled the tempo changes, stops and starts to Stevie Wonder's song "IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME", effortlessly and gave it some of his own flair. Now that's definitely NOT karaoke in my book.

His looks reminds me of the Faun, Mr. Tumnus of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ( you know, the Chronicles of Narnia ). He needs a dental makeover but it would be a big mistake to do that.

If Taylor’s white hair is what distinghishes him, Eliott’s dentures will be the one that makes him stand out in the face of the pretty boys and girls.

He is one smart guy for toning down Simon's effusive praise when he said he has one of the best voices in 5 idol competitions. Eliott added the word -- POTENTIALLY -- which makes him look humble. Definitely a plus in this competition.

Can anyone tell me what ethnicity the family name -- YAMIN is ? Sounds Semitic to me.

Looks like this American Idol 4 favorite did the smart thing ....

SOURCE : http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,165927,00.html

'Idol' Defector Mario Vasquez Gets Big Record Deal

Tuesday, August 16, 2005

By Roger Friedman

Mario's Scheme Works

You may recall the story about Mario Vazquez, the kid who bolted mid-season from "American Idol" last winter. He'd been convinced by his lawyer — the same lawyer who represented Clay Aiken — to leave the show rather than stay and sign a management contract with the "Idol" producers.

I can tell you now that the strategy worked. Mario, according to my sources, has signed a lucrative deal with legendary record executive Clive Davis and Davis' J Records.

Even better: Vazquez will be managed by another legend, Arnold Steifel, the man who has guided Rod Stewart's rocketing career for over 30 years.

The deal will be announced right after Labor Day, sources tell me. But no time is being wasted: even as we speak, Vazquez is in the studio recording tracks under Davis' watchful eye.

This news should be a big deal for several reasons: If Vazquez had stayed on "American Idol" and won — which he likely would have done — he would have wound up on J Records anyway.

The main difference is now he won't have to live under a management agreement with 19 Entertainment and Simon Fuller.

Fuller doesn't look so good in this deal, but you never know. Perhaps sensing an end to "American Idol" madness, he sold his company for millions of dollars earlier this year.

And there's a rumor that "Idol" winners will no longer record for J Records. Fuller is said to be shopping around for a new home.

Davis, as usual, comes out on top. He has the next big pop star and is off the hook if "Idol" is indeed on the wane.

Thought this week's show was less entertaining than last week's.

Katherine--Big letdown. My favorite voice but that performance wasn't very good. Hope she rebounds next week.

Lisa--Solid but not as impressive as last week.

Ayla--Continues to surprise me. I didn't expect much from her before last week's show, but she surprised me then, too.

Paris--Trying to sing beyond her range. Didn't like that performance nearly as well as her previous one.

Kinnik--Big mistake with that song.

Melissa--Better than last week but still mediocre.

Brenna--This week's "Copacabana". Bye, bye.

Heather--Sang a bit better than last week but still not good enough. I'd vote her off along with Brenna.

Kellie--Must be better in person than what's coming through on television. I'd give her one more week to see if I can figure out what I'm missing.

Mandisa--Best of the night.

OK folks, how shall I title this episode ?

Remember the title of the song -- THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME ?

Well My personal title would be ( with apologies to the song-writer ) --- THE SONGS REMAIN LAME.

What an underwhelming night. Seriously folks -- THIS IS THE NIGHT TO SHINE. You are not limited and neutered by one of them silly themes ( e.g. songs by P. Diddy ( just kidding folks ) ) and you can CHOOSE SONGS TO PLAY TO YOUR STRENGTHS. If you can't choose the right one to highlight your abilities and vocal prowess, how the heck are you going survive the theme nights when you are forced to sing DISCO ? ( come to think of it, someone DID choose to sing a Disco tune tonite. More about that later ).

But let's get on with the contestants......

Katharine Mcphee is rooming w/ Kellie Pickler & they like to goof off. She sang ‘Alls’ Fair in Love’. I hated it. HATE, HATE, HATE. I've heard Stevie Wonder performed N number of times on this show and 99% of the performances DID NOT MEET THE STANDARD. ONE PLEASANT EXCPETION ---- ELIOTT YAMIN LAST WEEK ( yep, the Amish farmer look-alike with the bad dentures ), who absolutely did Stevie proud with his version of IF YOU LOVE ME.

Remember the talented David Robinson last season ? This song - ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE -- yep, the very same one that Katie sang, was his undoing and turned out to be his swan song. Many a singer have fallen by the wayside because of their attempt to mimic the great Stevie Wonder.

So how to put it ? Everything about Katharine tonight was bad. POOR SONG CHOICE, POOR STAGE PRESENCE, JUST POOR EVERYTHING. Remember the rumor that she was leaving the show ? Well after this performance I am beginning to think she's throwing the game away. I mean what the heck was she thinking ? She was my favorite female to take the lead and here she is UNDERWHELMING US with this lame performance. Not even her delicate cascading long dark hair could protect her from a timid and almost FORCED sounding performance. It's as if someone put a gun to her head and told her to sing this song OR ELSE ....

Randy said it was a safe choice & wasn’t her best. It was just ok. Paula said she moves her but the song choice didn’t connect. Simon said this show is more than just singing. This wasn’t her best night by a mile. Katharine said she thought it was a bad song choice too when she was rehearsing but once you pick it you have to go wit i it. FIRE THE ADVISER KATIE AND HIRE ME !!!

At this point I am beginning to change my mind about Katie. She owned two of the best pre top 24 performances in American Idol history. Her auditions where she sang GOD BLESS THE CHILD and I KNOW I'LL NEVER LOVE THIS WAY AGAIN were MAGICAL. What's happened since ? Did she have a falling out with her mom ? Her boyfriend ? This was absolutely LACKLUSTER.

BTW, I still haven't heard Kate perform an up-tempo song that highlights her FUN personality. CAN SHE DO IT ? Or like Dennis Rodman limited to Rebounding and Defense in basketball, she can only do powerful melismatic ballads ?

Kinnik Sky is from the country & wants to represent. So she is wearing one of the worst outfits I have seen. Camouflage Capri pants w/ a drawstring at the knees & then cowboy boots. Just bad ( my wife smacks me for saying that and tells me -- WHAT DO YOU KNOW ? IF I DON'T BUY YOUR CLOTHES FOR YOU, YOU'D LOOK LIKE A HOBO. I keep quiet about outfits from then on)

She sang "Here for the Party". Well that was as Randy would say --- just AI'GHT.

Randy said he enjoys her energy & liked that song but it doesn’t have enough melody for her. Paula said she has to pick songs to show her amazing range & take risks. Simon said she attempts to stand out but he expects to see that kind of performance at Disneyland.

People -- For whatever FOX did, Kinnik is one of those who never had time to establish a fan base because of limited audition exposure. She needed to impress in a hurry. I'm not sure of this performance did it. You can't complain about her though. ELIOTT YAMIN had little exposure ( with less impressive looks at that ) but still did us proud.

Lisa Tucker was in the ‘Lion King’ when she was 10 for a year but this stage still made her nervous. She sang ‘Who’s Lovin’ you’. What is up with tonight? I am not liking it at all. She ended it nicely though. She's safe and will go to the top 12. But folks --- THIS IS FORGETABLE ( you'll hear me repeat this word again and again, I promise ).

Randy said the song choice didn’t show her off. Paula disagreed & said she forgets she is 16 cuz she is an amazing performer. Paula yaps on & on. Do you ever notice that she is the judge that talks the most but says the least ? Simon said he doesn’t want her to be a young girl trying to be older by singing grown up songs. But he thinks she will sail through tonight.

Melissa Mcghee sang ‘Why Haven’t I Heard From You’ ( yeah, Good old Red State, Reba Mcintyre, that'll endear her to everyone from Dixie ). OK, this is not bad at all, but not memorable either. So far the best of the lot. Florida beach baby Melissa swizzles like a cold steak slapped on a red hot grill. Her voice and sultry looks might take another round in the contest. Does anyone, beside me, think she has Elvis’s eyes? Melissa seems to have the same style as another (more good looking) girl we might have forgotten -- Lindsay Cardinale.

Randy said the song fit her & her smokey voice returned. He thought it was hot. Paula said she came out of her shell w/ her unique voice. Simon said he doesn’t know what the problem is w/ her. He loves her voice but she doesn’t connect w/ the audience. Paula was her usual annoying self & wouldn’t let Simon speak & kept interrupting & hitting him. Simon said she is like a precocious child. I think it is more like a drugged up teenager. Paula got up & switched seats w/ Randy coz she didn’t want to be by Simon anymore. Whatever. Simon continued saying Melissa has to wow them coz no one will remember that song. Well for that matter NO ONE WILL REMEMBER ANYONE WHO PERFORMED SO FAR.

Heather Cox chooses Mariah Cary's ‘Hero’. Why ? Simple reason --- NO ONE HAS EVER SANG IT IN AMERICAN IDOL BEFORE.
Big mistake. Huge Mistake. GOOD SONG CHOICE THOUGH. IF YOU CAN TACKLE IT. You cannot do Mariah if you can’t at least do it justice. I am sure you can’t do it better than her, but at least be somewhat good.

Well how shall I put it gently --- THIS IS NOT IT. Snake charmer Heather’s voice was like a soggy discarded tissue. Lacking any stage presence, she just stood there. Maybe she thought that her blue eyes, blond hair, and nice figure would wow us. It didn’t and she doesn’t. It takes more than a pretty face to wow us baby ( ask Becky O' Donahue for instance ).

The guys in the competition have got to be loving it at this point. NOT ONE OF THE GIRLS IS GIVING THEM ANY SERIOUS COMPETITION.

Paula said it was a risk because no one is hotter right now than Mariah ( AKA Mimi ). Randy said she looks great & then name-dropped that he worked w/ Mariah & Heather paled in comparison. Simon said that was like the warm up before a horrid pageant. He said it is pointless if you aren’t as good as the original. My point exactly.

OK, we've got 5 ladies so far, WHAT's GOING ON ?( as Marvin Gaye would say ). We've been UNDERWHELMED and I'm beginning to YAWN.

Catty Brenna Gethers tries to do the DISCO classic by Donna Summers ----> ‘Last Dance’. How to describe in one word ?

DREADFUL. And also, her posing is so annoying. Paula said she didn’t see the magic. Brenna said she thought it was wonderful & that America loved it & it will reflect in the votes. I think she means VotefortheWorst.com.

Randy said Brenna & Simon are alike. He said vocally it was pitchy & not inspired. Simon said she murdered the song & thinks it may be the last time we see her ( last time for the last dance ??? ). Brenna said she knows there are people behind her. With hand on her thrust hip, Brenna the great ego lost her edge tonight. What happened to her attitude? Maybe she has been posing for too many photos instead of practicing. Brenna, this song is perfect for you. THIS MIGHT BE YOUR LAST DANCE.

Paris Bennett reminds me of Dr. Bailey {Va-Jay-Jay} on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. It’s the round face & the smile I think. OK, girl, what about some Billie Holiday ? I MEAN, PLEASE -- SOMETHING DIFFERENT, SOMETHING NEVER PERFORMED BEFORE. Is she listening ? IN A WORD --- NO !!! ( Hey Ann, are you advising your grandkid ?)

Paris sang the Bette Midler standard ----> ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ ( which has been performed many times before and is a staple in ANY KARAOKE bar in the country ). WHY WHY WHY THIS SONG Paris !!!! Sheeesh !

OK, I liked it but there is something about the performance I didn’t like. The contrived arm waving or something. I don’t know. But it does not say much if this is the best of the night so far for me. THE BEST STILL ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH. Petite Paris started flat, worked a great recovery, but ended empty. Her singing was boring as toasted white bread. The tragedy is I know she can do so much better. Maybe she has been hanging out with Brenna too long?

Paula said she is am amazing performer but wanted to remind her to celebrate her youth. Randy said she reminds him of a young Lauryn Hill coz she doesn’t ever have to play it safe & that song was too old for her. Simon said she has to avoid being 17 trying to sound 50.

Ayla Brown is a tomboy & has had to learn about makeup for the show ( and can I tell you she stands about a head above ANYONE in the show ?).

She sang ‘I Want You To Need Me ( what a chore to tackle Celine Dione ). Not the best of the night but I would say she is probably the best so far out of this sorry lot. The thing that Ayla reminds me of is one of these Korean/Chinese children in Flushing, whose parents push them to excel NO MATTER WHAT. They can't lose, they've gotta be better than the other kid and the parents push the poor kid to a point where the kid doesn;t have time to lie down and stare at a tree to admire nature anymore. If their neighbor's kid is playing the violin, their kid's gotta play the violin too. If their neighbor's kid is going to cram school to get a perfect SAT or REGENT score, guess what, that's where their sending their kids !!!!

And so Ayla sings and performs this as if her medal dreams depended on it and she sings it well ( as any figure skater would when peforming ).

Paula said she can tell Ayla wants this really bad. She was pleasantly surprised by her tonight & thought it was the right song for her range. Randy loves her backstory & was surprised by her too. It was the right song & he liked it. Simon said he thinks she has gotten A’s in everything. Ayla disagreed, she said she originally got C's in her grades. Simon got her to finally say that eventually she got all A’s & that is what he meant. He thinks she works harder than anyone else but sometimes you want rawness & for it not to be mechanical.

Well as I said, Ayla is taking this competition like a basketball game, she's gonna kill the other team and she practices 5 hours to get it right. Ayla the amateur athlete is now playing in the pros. Her voice was right on, her stage command was right on, and she is finding her dreams while entertaining us.
But do you guys really want someone to think of this competition the way Michelle Kwan thinks of the Olympics ? WHAT ABOUT HAVING FUN ? WHAT ABOUT JUST ENJOYING IT ? This poor girl is being pushed to stardom by her demanding parents and I can feel it. She ought to move to South Korea or Singapore.

Kellie Pickler sang ‘Something to Talk About’. Oy! That was the coming out song of Fantasia. Do you notice the difference between the Manor born Ayla and the girl who was born on the wrong side of the track --- Kellie ? It's like the prince and the pauper. Ayla's voice is TRAINED and PRACTICED due to able vocal coaching. Kellie on the other hand is RAW and NATURAL. Ayla does not have it naturally but did well because of SHEER WILL POWER TO DO WELL. As for Kellie, she was simply born with it. She has a naturally nice, UNTRAINED voice. And notice the difference between Kellie and Ayla. Kellie IS HAVING FUN. NOT FORCING IT. She gives the impression of enjoying the performance instead of COMPETING AND SMASHING THE COMPETITION.

Natural country gal Kelly snaps my fingers, claps my hands, and makes me feel good. She has such incredible natural talent. She continues to make her grandpa proud. Keep on singing, Kelly. You are what makes American Idol such a success and a joy to watch ( and cut down on the hard luck story already. WE GET YOUR POINT ).

Paula said she can’t get any cuter & thought it was a good song. Randy said she is a hot one. He loved it & thought it was the right song. He liked it a lot. Simon said you just can’t help but like her. If he just heard the song & didn’t know her he would say it wasn’t the best vocal & was rough around the edges. But she is cute & likable. THAT's WHAT IT's ALL ABOUT FOLKS,

Now to my favorite lady who put Simon in his place with grace and dignity ..... Mandissa Hundley (or as she would like to be known from now on -- just MANDISA ).

Her video clip was her playing a joke on Ryan at early auditions saying she has dog jaw & when he goes to touch it she barks & goes to bite him.

Mandisa closed the night w/ ‘Cry ( a tribute to her Nashville home )’. Now this was the BEST PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGHT. The comfortable full range professional voice of Mandisa does not disappoint. I am amazed that she is not already on some recording label.

BTW, NOTE TO CARRIE UNDERWOOD --- Look what you've done girl --- you started this country trend and now every girl wants to sing country, even the black ladies.

AND OH NEWS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T HEARD -- Carrie Underwood is coming back on Results night to perform her near triple platinum hit which is still charting on the billboards --- JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL.

Paula said she is one of a kind & needed in the competition. She thinks she takes songs she wouldn’t normally sing & puts her own flavor on it. Then she was patronizing & said she has a beautiful face. Randy said the verse was rough & she started shaky & couldn’t find the pitch. He wasn’t thrilled w/ the song choice. Simon said America will keep her around & thinks when she is on there isn’t any female better in the competition.

LET's SUMMARIZE --- THIS WAS A BAD NIGHT. POOR SONG CHOICE, RESULTING IN LESS THAN IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCES.

What a bad night. So I guess I would say Paris & Ayla were the best. The worst? Everyone else. I guess I would say Kinnik will go for sure. I guess maybe Melissa will be the other since she wasn’t spotlighted in the auditions.

MY RANKINGS FROM BEST TO WORST

Mandisa
Kellie
Ayla
Paris
Melissa
Lisa
Kinnik
Katharine
Heather
Brenna

WHO SHOULD GO -- Heather and Brenna
WHO WILL GO --- Heather and Kinnik ( don't underestimate the New York vote for catty Brenna. Remember, the New Yorkers put John Stevens DEEEP into the finals ).

Bring on the men. One spoiler --- I hear that Mr. "Gray" Charles ( that's Taylor Hicks for those who don't know ) has chosen to perform Ray Charles' "I've Got a Woman". SHOULD BE FUN TO WATCH.

Folks,

FYI -- There is a website out there that purports to determine which contestant is more likely to be voted off based on a computer scan of the percentage of busy signals they're getting on their numbers.

If you want to see the results for the girls thus far, go here :

http://www.dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp

Then maybe we can go back and tally the same for the boys and then determine how accurate they are tis coming Thursday.

Top group tonight:

Elliot(Best voice of the guys.)

Chris(One dimensional but he does what he does very well.)

Gedeon(Nice job.)

Taylor(Still hoping he wins but he only manages to make the bottom of the top group tonight)

Bottom group:

Ace(This week's song exposed his singing weaknesses.)

David(Better than last week.)

Will(Bland. Needs to pick "fun" songs.)

Sway(Still don't like him but at least it wasn't that unbearable falsetto.)

Kevin(His odd appeal is wearing thin. Expect him to be gone soon but he had a better run than he probably should have.)

Bucky(Just not enough talent to last. Probably gone along with Kevin.)

The women were underwhelming the night before. Will the men do us proud ?

IN SUM, Let's put it this way -- except for a a couple of performances, the answer is MOSTLY NO. Most of them were playing it safe and a lot of them were singing songs that were already performed before and did not make us forget the former performers. Not too impressive IMHO.

One of the given things about American Idol is the tendency to want to be in the prediction game. I mean how quickly do all of us jump to conclusions about contestants ? Last week, for example, a lot of folks were declaring that Katahrine McPhee and Ace Young were certain to be locks in the top 12.

But what do we base this on ? A few audition snippets hand-selected by the show's producers and a single live performance ?

That would be like declaring Nate Robinson to be the next NBA superstarto replace Kobe Bryant because at 5'8" he was a spectacular dunker and won the NBA slam dunk competition. But look what a stinker his team turned out to be !

The boys picked up right where the American Idol girls left off and they have a lot to live up to While there were several ok performances, it was starting to look like NOT ONE was even going to get close to approaching some of the performances delivered last season on American Idol at this stage of the game. Last season, we had Mario Vasquez tearing the screen up with I LOVE MUSIC, Anwar Robinson blowing us away with his great version of WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD, and Bo Bice wowing us with his incredible rendition of WHIPPING POST.

We did not have such WOW performances last night save one.

However, the final performance of this week's semifinal round made it clear that at least one guy has the goods to win it all this year. Yes folks, I'm talking about the second coming of Bon Jovi ----- Chris Daughtry. THIS MAN HAS BEEN *CONSISTENT* FROM AUDITION TO THE FIRST TWO PERFORMANCES. Remember the flaming background in his first performance last week ? WELL, ISN'T THAT APPROPRIATE ? HE WAS BLAZING !!!

Let's not mince words folks. CHRIS DAUGHTRY LEFT EVERYONE ELSE IN THE DUST TONIGHT.

So, let's go on with the show....The unenviable task of going first and setting the expectations for the night sky high is none other than my man -- Taylor Hicks.

Yes, Taylor Hicks, the grey-haired '70s throwback who could pass for Michael McDonald's long-lost son. Would Taylor do Ray Charles ? Would he blow us away like he does in his southern soul fires circuit for which he is well known for ? ALAS AND ALAK NO ! Like Katharine McPhee yesterday he didn't do much to make his performance memorable. He chooses a LAME Commodore song -- Easy Like Sunday Morning --- which even if sang by Lionel Ritchie himself on this venue would probably underwhelm and well what do you know ? HE DOES.

All three judges concur that it wasn’t one of Taylor’s best performances ( DUH !!!). However, it was still one of the better performances of the night. ( which is not saying much ). What annoys me is his continues tendency to shout WHOOO mid-song ! CUT IT OUT MAN ! Now, now, before all you fans of the gray-haired dude send me nasty e-mails, I'll admit Taylor's ''Easy'' was good.

But let's not sugar-coat it ----- his performance lacked the show-stopping originality we've come to expect from the competition's quirkiest competitor who has given America the unprecedented -- WHAT"s HE GONNA DO NEXT -- anticipation never before seen in this competition.

Look folks, I have heard the self-produced CD of Taylor Hicks entitled UNDER THE RADAR, including his awesone ( and that's a word I seldom use ) version of GEORGIA ON MY MIND. THIS MAN CAN BE INCREDIBLE IF HE WANTS TO BE, singing like a man possessed by his music ( YOU'VE GOTTA HEAR HIM TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I'M SAYING ).

But what's happened to him tonight ? He's totally mellowed down, like a Lion that has been de-clawed.

Taylor, Taylor,Taylor. Do you know what your song choice and resulting performance reminds me of ? How to put it ?

You remind me of a great figure skater who we've seen done triple and a half axles three times consecutively. You are now in the singing equivalent of the Olympics and we expected you to do that awesomeroutine you've always done. Instead, what did you give us ? Two double axles and nothing else. WHAT WERE YOU THINKING ? Who's been advising you ? SHOW HIM/HER THE DOOR.

Where's GEORGIA ON MY MIND ? Where's Sam Cooke ? ( Gedeon essentially stole your song from you and did well on it ).

What a let down ! Watching your performance is like anticipating the climactic Empire State Building scene in King Kong only to be told that it ain't going to be shown ! BUMMER !

I'm sure your fans will pull you through, if only because there were at least 3 or 4 less stellar performances last night. But if you fail to give us GEORGIA next week ( as Nikko did last season, and your recorded version outshines his by a hundred miles ), then we know you're not in this to win or wow.

Next week is your last chance before the final 12 kicks in and you get sucked in to those lame theme nights where you're forced to sing the songs of someone else's composition or Disco. You can choose your own genre now. SO DO IT !!! Give us "GEORGIA" DAMMIT !

The one thing that will ensure Taylor's slide to the top 12 is his MEMORABILITY -----> the hair ( giving him the monicker -- "Gray
Charles) , the harmonica, the "I'm just really happy to be here" attitude and the BLUES voice. He'll need to step it up vocally if he wants to win, but he shouldn't have a problem advancing in this undistinguished field tonight.

AND DID I SPY BO BICE AMONG THE AUDIENCE CLAPPING AFTER TAYLOR's PERFORMANCE ? YES I DID. He's probably cheering his fellow Alabaman and co-performer in the club circuit on. Hey Bo, at this stage in the competition, you blew us all away with your unforgetable rendition of the Allman Brother's classic WHIPPING POST. Whip Taylor back in shape and tell him to sing GEORGIA for us !

Who's next ? AHHH --- Mr. Tumnus look-alike, my Virginia Jewish man ---- Eliott Yamin, one of the many supposedly unknowns among the men. Eliott again, reminds me of an Amish farmer but if you look at his picture and compare it with the FAWN in the Narnia movie, there is a marked similarity. Eliott continues to hedge his bets by reminding everyone that Simon used the word : "POTENTIAL" to describe his ability to be the best singer in this competition. And why does Eliott continually advertise the fact that he is a very experienced KARAOKE singer ? Is that good ? Does that give hope for stardom to karaoke singers out there ?

Elliott sings --- “Moody’s Mood For Love.” ( by James Moody).

Randy Jackson gives Elliott a standing ovation for his performance which overstated the case a bit. But the judges' praises at least gives him a head start as he looks to chase down the front-runners. Paula Abdul says Stevie Wonder would be proud (but why would Stevie care a whit considering this is a James Moody song ?). However, Simon Cowell says “you can’t win a show like this with a song like that.”

Well how to put it ?

Eliott is like the Bush economy when Dubya took over. You know, people expected the great depression -- the worst economy since Herbert Hoover. Instead, the economy keeps getting better and better resulting in an unemployment rate of 4.7% and a GDP that tops every other G8 nation. In other words, you are expecting bad things from him but he continues to confound and be "MIS-UNDERESTIMATED" because of his bad teeth and pointy ears.

Who is next on the plate ? None other than --- Ace Young, the Kevin Sorbo look-alike with the come-hither look that threatens to eclipse Constantine.

I've always said this folks --- YOU DO JUDGE A BOOK BY IT's COVER. ADMIT IT GIRLS ---- YOU DO, YOU DO, YOU DO. You're keeping him in the top 12 *BECAUSE* of what nature has endowed him, not necessarilly because he's the best singer in this competition.

Ace sings “If I’m Not Made For You.” by David Bedingfield. Well how to put it ? His performance pleased the judges because it showed off his vocal range (including a falsetto). If this were a figure skating competition, he would have gotten a high score on technical merits, since there were a lot of key changes to handle and he was quite adept at handling it.

Randy says “I think you sing better than you let on.” Paula Abdul ( who tries not to say anything bad and secretly has a crush on Ace) says “I really think that this is another good week for you.” However, Simon Cowell says “I think you struggle with the song tonight, and I think you are going to be very disappointed when you hear your vocal back on that.”

OK folks, lets put it this way --- Ace will be SIGNED to a record or acting deal no matter what. The guy can sing ( even when you listen to the audio ), so no taking it away from him. His first performance last week was better. But this one wasn't really as bad as Simon says it is.

However, this performance didn't do much to excite the audience, and the whole package was the dullest effort Young has offered thus far ( YAWN).

Hey Ace -- how's about giving us some CARELESS WHISPER by Wham ? HUH ! Sign me up as your unofficial adviser, better still, log on to the American Idol thread of Free Republic to get some good advise !!!

All I can say is ----> If this was the first time the audience had seen Young, he might be in trouble ( but then again , no. His looks will give him the teeny bopper girl's vote and a built-in immunity ) . It's unfair though because I think the FOX powers that be have given him WAY TOO MUCH TV time compared to say Gedeon or Eliott. He's not going anywhere out of the competition.

Ahhh ---- here comes GUY SMILEY --- AKA Gedeon McKinney. The kid with the perma-grin GLUED on his face. Was he the model for Mr. Potato Head > ( and did I spell the word right Mr. Quayle ? ). Gedeon is one of the four teenagers left on the men's side of the aisle, but he's unique among that quartet because he consistently sounds more like a professional than someone auditioning for a high-school autumn musical.

Gedeon must have watched Tayor's audition because he stole the song Taylor should have sang tonight instead of that lame Commodore song ---- Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," a good decision. Gedeon surprisingly did justice to it !!!

I just kinda wish Motown were more in vogue nowadays, that would put Gedeon right on top. Gedeon could probably help us channel the spirit of Barry Gordy.

Do the judges like it ? Randy Jackson says “You are a really great natural performer.” Paula Abdul says “You are a performer I feel we will see for decades.” Simon Cowell says “You are a funny little thing,” and adds “I thought it was a very good performance tonight.”

Gedoen’s FYI, is a straight "A" student and I was told graduated VALEDICTORIAN in his school.

Simon called him overconfident. Well confidence is a good thing, if you have the talent to back it up. This kid shows he has it.

Now here comes my neighbor and fellow Long-Islander -- the man-child -- Kevin Covais.

There are 4 male youngsters in this competition. They are all battling for the coveted teenager-who-stays-around-a-lot-longer-than-his-talent-would-indicate-because-people-like-him position.

Kevin has a AWWW factor with him ( a mystical force striking most women with motherly, auntie and sisterly instincts in this country ). Therefore, he has has as good a chance as any of the 4 teens of landing the coveted 6th spot. Kevin represents everyone's kid brother or non-threatening next-door neighbor. If this show were a sitcom, he'd be the "normal" version of Steve Urkel and you'd be rooting for him to get the girl he's pining for.

In his video clip that he's been getting a lot of fan mail from 12- and 13-year-old girls. Well duh !!! Do you expect teens to really fall for you ? I don't know if that is the fan base demographic he's looking for, but those young girls are tech-savy nowadays and believe me, Long Islanders can text-message their votes faster than their parents can and have plenty of time in their idle hands.

So, Kevin sings Marvin Gaye's classic --- "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". How to put it ? Let's just say that I won't be forgetting Marvin anytime soon. The vocals were fine, and he came through at the end after a tentative and unsure start.

Randy Jackson says “I really thoroughly enjoyed that.” Paula Abdul says “You are infectious.” Simon Cowell says “The reality is that if I heard that on the radio I would turn it off.” A tthis point in time, I'd like to agree with Simon and give the Kid a break so that he can go back to school and be honored by his fellow classmates for making it this far. This is as far as we should give the kid and we shouldn't have to put him to more embarrasments and harsh words from Simon, the uber-critic.

But then what could save Kevin ? Ryan Seacrest might have unwittingly done that with his comparing Kevin to Chicken Little that could come across as UNCALLED FOR to some viewers. He just MIGHT GET THE SYMPATHY VOTE !!! Let's give props to the kid, he's poised and takes it with a sense of humor.

The middle of the show brings the singers who really needed to separate themselves from the pack.

YOU'VE GOTTA TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITY TO STAND OUT. This statement describes Jose "Sway" Penala more than anyone else.

Look Jose, if you want your monicker ----''Sway'' to take you into the finals, you're going to have to get past Kevin Covais and Gedeon McKinney and make us, the listeners REALLY WANT TO SWAY !!

Jose "Sway" Penala sang "Overjoyed" by Stevie Wonder ( why this obssession with Stevie Wonder in this competition ?), which didn't impress the judges as being much more than karaoke. It was an unduly harsh criticism, at least when compared to the rest of the singers, but Penala didn't do much to make the song his own, and didn't come through with the effort he needed. Who was the one who last did justice to this song ? The only one whose version for me was memorable was the piano accompanied version of Season 2's top 12 comeptitor -- CHARLES GRISGBY.

Randy Jackson says “It wasn’t as good for me as last week.” Paula Abdul says “I feel like tonight you’re a little disconnected.” ( NOT A GOOD SIGN IF YOU CAN'T EVEN BRING PAULA TO SAY SOMETHING GOOD ). Simon Cowell says it “is exactly how not to do well on a show like this because that was nothing more than pure karaoke.”

Well, how to put it ? Sway could very well be on his way home unless his large fan base pulls him through. I've lived in the Phippines long enough to know that there are many outstanding entertainment talents waiting to be discovered. We haven't skimmed the surface yet..

Unfortunately, "Sway" did little to Sway me to vote for him, although I can imagine hundreds of thousands of Pinoys from Daly City and Hawaii dialing for him ( in other words, he gets the Jasmine Trias demographic ), which would be a shame really. This competition SHOULD BE about excellence, but it usually ends up less than what you expect it to be.

OK, Who is next ? AHH, the second coming of Donny Osmond --- Will Makar ( or is it Fred Savage of the Wonder Years ?)

Will Makar chooses "Lady" by Kenny Rogers, a song that, as Ryan Seacrest pointed out, was released before he was born. The performance itself was alright, and Makar did a decent job of putting a little of his own variations on the vocals. But what does this performance and song do for you other than force you to stand still and not do much ?

Do the judges like it ?

Randy Jackson says “It was just basically alright for me.” ( now we have Randy not using such strange DAWG POUNDwords as A'IGHT )

Paula Abdul says “too safe, a little bland.” ( HUMMM, Paula now starting to act like a real critic ? Who woulda thunk ?)

Simon Cowell says “It was like an audition for Cats,” and adds “Eleven year old girls will love that.”

In one of the funniest moments of the night, Ryan Seacrest starts undressing Will on stage, and Simon Cowell warns Will to “get off stage quick.”

OK, I'll go on a limb and try to play Devil's advocate on this one. Willy in my opinion did quite good on this one. He showed off some range and this performance does not cause him to deserve to be voted off this week.

Well well well, here comes my favorite lumber jack man -- Bucky Covington. Bucky Covington reminds me of the character played by Nichlas Cage in the movie -- RAISING ARIZONA. In his video, he reminds us of where he comes from with : "this L.A. food is strange and I miss my chicken and biscuits". Well, Kellie Picker doesn't like Calamari so you're entitled to your Dixie Southern fries boy. Bucky though, is savy enough to realize what got him here and won't change until he's forced to.

Covington gave the perfect song selection that matches his background and character ----> "Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks, allowing him to be both a country singer and a rock star. This was a clever choice. Bucky's persona does not really give him much room or leeway to portray himself as anything else other than a southern blue collar man.And the FOX PTB (That's Powers That Be to you folks from Rio Linda ) was VERRRY UNFAIR TO HIM BY NOT GIVING HIM SUFFICIENT PRE-FINAL AIRTIME. He doesn't seem to have the fan base of some of the other contestants, so needs to come up big every week.

Randy Jackson says “This was a great song choice for you.” Paula Abdul says “You hit every note right from the beginning.” Simon Cowell says “Bucky, I like you because I think you’re a very sincere guy,” but adds “I don’t see Bucky as the star attraction. I see him as the support for the stars.”

Let's put it this way ----- Bucky did have a solid night. HE DID WHAT HE COULD AND PLAYED TO HIS STRENGTHS.

Unfortunately, his downfall could be that contestants need the support of their home states to thrive in the competition, and Bucky has the misfortune of sharing a home state with Chris Daughtry who was THE STAR of the evening. Had Bucky been from say, North Dakota, Kansas or Kentucky, we might have a horse race. Bucky boy, I like you, but you and Chris split the North Carolina vote and Chris is ahead of you by a big gap. Life's not fair.

Next, comes John Stevens 2.0 ( boy don't they start them young nowadays ), 17 year old --- David Radford, who tried to make Freddie Mercury sound like Frank Sinatra last week.

David Radford shares the same problem as Bucky ---- he's stuck with the genre that got him here and his reputation is cast in stone. Unfortunately, the crooning tones of Frank Sinatra's "The Way You Look Tonight" don't lend themselves well to a competition like this one. If the show were called "American Wedding Singer," Radford would be the one to beat.

Look folks, we already had the painful John Stevens experience 2 seasons ago where his fans in NY kept him unbearably on and on and on forcing him to do songs that made him look like a fish out of the water ( remember the embarrasing CROCODILE ROCK in Elton John night ?). Mercifully, John's torture was put to an end at number 6. DECENT POSITION, which gave him a modest recording contract.

Folks, do you really want a repeat of the John Stevens experience again ? Had Radford shown us some range ( ALA Tony Bennet in I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO ), I would've changed my mind. But seriously, end his misery now and let Dave go.

Radford wasn't helped by the fact that Daughtry was the singer who followed. It was a clear illustration of the candidates who tend to do well vs. the ones who walk the tightrope each week; Radford was likeable but forgettable, while Daughtry was the closest performance to Bo Bice's Incredible WHIPPING POST performance last year. At this stage of the game, sometimes bland is worse than bad, which is what a number of the men will be worrying about in the hours remaining before the results are announced ( you hear that David fans ? Let the kid go now and spare us the embarrasment ).

AND SO WE HAVE THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE EVENING .....

Chris Daughtry began the week as one of the favorites, HE WAS CONSISTENT THROUGHOUT THE COMPETITION AND NEVER GAVE A BAD OR DISAPPOINTING PERFORMANCE. Last week , he gave us Bon Jovi.

Chris Daughtry closes the show with a bang by giving us a rousing version of “Hemorrhage.” by FUEL. IT WAS FLAWLESS !!! It was an effort that was refreshingly raw and yet at the same time remarkably professional. Chris ended the night with a blaze of glory.

OK folks, after watching this peroformance, let me take a poll -----> Is there a single Idol viewer who'd have objected if the show's producers had eliminated David, Sway, Will, and Bucky in a single swoop and allowed Chris to rock out with a five-song mini-concert doing Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, U2, The Eagles and Led Zeppelin ? How's about Grand Funks Railroad's We're An American Band ?? I want more.

Wanna know what the judges said ??? Randy Jackson says “I loved it, loved it, loved it, loved it.” Paula Abdul says “Do you know how good you are?” Simon Cowell says “This was the only performance, remember this guys, which stands up in the real world.” Simon also adds “Tonight you are the standard every one of these guys should be looking toward, because it was in a different class.” His step-children should be proud to call him dad. If he didn't make the top 12, it would be like Pee Wee Herman beating Bruce Lee in a street fight.

The only question now is this ---- can Chris keep it up ? After all, I have to keep reminding myself, it's only March 1, and with nearly three months of Idol in front of us, it's way too early to jump to conclusions. What is Chris going to do with them lame theme nights when he has to sing someone else's music ? can he do musicals ? ( Well why not ? TOMMY is a musical ). What's he going to sing in DISCO NIGHT ? Curious minds want to know....

At this point, the ONLY TWO Male performers who have been CONSISTENTLY GOOD are Chris Daughtry and Eliott Yamin.

Still, the Idol producers would've had to show video of Taylor and Ace running over their mothers with a trailer and leaving the scene to put them at risk of elimination on Thursday night.

So, I would have to say that the following 4 shuold be a lock to go to the final 12 -- CHRIS, ELIOTT, TAYLOR and ACE. As good as Gedeon sounded, though, he's still not quite in the same league as Elliott Yamin or Chris Daughtry, or for that matter, even Taylor Hicks ( if he ever returns to his true blue zone ). Yet, this stylish teenager conjured up the kind of soulfulness and vocal control that's a rarity on the Idol stage. I am inclined to give him the fifth spot. We'll have to see next week how he does.

Bucky has the unenviable position of having to split the vote with Chris and he ain't gonna win at this stage. Not at the rate Chris is burning.

So, we are left with the kiddie voters splitting with --- Kevin, Will and David.

I am inclined to choose Will over the other two simply because I think Will has the pipes and attitude to pull it off while Kevin is just too choir-boyish to make the cut. David Radford on the other hand is already an old trick we've seen in season 2 with John Stevens. We don't want to see the second coming of John again. And Radford hasn't really shown the range and ability to hit the power notes. If David somehow manages to score votes from tone-deaf Idol addicts or the masochistic set ( of which there are many), that could be trouble for Bucky Covington and Will Makar, neither of whom has displayed enough personality in interview footage to make up for their utterly mundane showings tonight.

Finally, I thought Jose ''Sway'' Penala's ''Overjoyed'' was the night's second weakest vocal ( after David Radford). However, I have an inexplicable feeling he's got enough of a fan base to get a free pass for it. Never underestimate the voters who dialed like maniacs to get Jasmine Trias through over the much more talented LaToya London ( who arguably is one of the best female singers of all the American Idol contestants ).

MY RANKINGS FOR TONIGHT ( BEST TO WORSE )

Chris
Eliott
Gedeon
Taylor
Ace
Will
Bucky
Kevin
Sway
David

WHO SHOULD GO : David and Sway
WHO WILL GO : David and Bucky

Just got this interesting bit of information from a blog site dedicated to Taylor Hicks regarding predicting which contestant is most likely to be voted out :

« Taylor Interview from WadePredicting the American Idol results via busy signals - flawed methodology? Or maybe not?
So there is an interesting website called Dial Idol ( dialidol.com) that allows users to download a speed dialing application for American Idol. Assuming the application works as advertised (not verified by me) that makers attempt to predict the final results based on the number of busy signals the dialing application receives per contestant.

Clearly the assumption is that if you receive busy signals for your favorite contestant - you can be sure that others are voting for them. While I was highly skeptical that this made any sense a little investigation yields some interesting results.

What are the predictions for this week?

Higher numbers indicate the busiest lines, Taylor leads by a landslide in popularity - but can this be right?

Performer % Busy
Taylor 37
Ace 24
Chris 19
Will 17
Gedeon 14
Kevin 9
Sway 8
Elliott 7
Bucky 7
David 5

On their own website the operators say . . .

How accurate are the predictions?

That depends on the number of people running DialIdol. With minimal data during the last 6 votes of season 4 DialIdol was about 65% accurate including predicting who would win. With extensive data … well we’ll see!

If you read the following analysis you’ll see that the above statement is, well, mostly incorrect.

While we here at Gray Charles are pleased with the predicted results we were heavily skeptical that it was reliable so we contacted our friendly neighborhood statistician. Here is what he (my brother) had to say (take a deep breath).

First, a few definitions: The ‘population’ is the total number of all calls made, regular and computer dialed. In this case the population is 40 million calls. The ’sample’ is the cases selected for computer-aided dialing. In this case x (the percentage of all calls using dialing software) times the population yields the number of cases in the sample–let’s call it ‘y’, the total number of computer-dialed calls.

It sounds crazy, but the percentage, ‘x’ of the total is not critical in and of itself. It’s just the total number of cases ‘y’ in the sample that’s important. Thus if the population is really big–i.e. 40 million calls–’x’
can be really small and you can still end up with reliable results. Thus, it’s better (statistically) to sample 1% of 40 million calls than 50% of 400,000 calls. So, although ‘x’ is important in establishing the total number of calls ‘y’, I can’t give you a ‘critical’ figure of ‘x’.

Also–and this sounds crazy, too–the relative proportion yielding a positive result is important too. You’ll have more confidence in the estimate (narrower confidence limits) for an individual with a busy signal rate of about 50% than an individual with a busy signal rate of 10%. So even if they have the same number of attempted calls, each contestant’s confidence limits will be different. You’ll have to work it out for each contestant based on their busy signal rate and the number of calls placed for them.

Here’s some examples:

Candidate A: 20% busy signal, 500 calls. Confidence limits are 20% plus or minus 3.4%. Put another way, we can be 95% confident that the ‘true’ busy signal rate for Candidate A is between 16.6 and 23.3%.

Candidate B: 15% busy signal, 500 calls. Confidence limits are 15% plus or minus 3.1%. Put another way, we can be 95% confident that the ‘true’ busy signal rate for Candidate B is between 11.9 and 18.1%.

Candidate C: 5% busy signal, 500 calls. Confidence limits are 5% plus or minus 1.9%. Put another way, we can be 95% confident that the ‘true’ busy signal rate for Candidate C is between 3.1 and 6.9%.

Candidate D: 20% busy signal, 5000 calls. Confidence limits are 20% plus or minus 1.1%. Put another way, we can be 95% confident that the ‘true’ busy signal rate for Candidate A is between 18.9 and 21.1%.

Note that although candidate A and D have the same busy signal rates, the confidence limits are much narrower for candidate D. You can be reasonably sure that candidate D will receive more votes that candidate B, but not so sure that candidate A will.

Lots of assumptions here to be fair - we’ll be reporting more on the American Idol phone system structure in the upcoming days.

Bottom Line - Dial Idol maybe onto something here - at least in the early stages in predicting who stays and who goes. You have to look at margin of error to see how accurate the predictions are but for now, I think the David, Bucky, Sway and Elliott (wft? Elliott) might want to watch out.

Questions, comments, concerns? Simply freaking out?

Let me know.

Guessed correctly on the girls booted off this week. Missed on both the guys, but I can't say I'm disappointed that Sway and David are gone.
