the next Idol is only seven months away… we can meet again in January…:)

“Great! That’s what I wanted to hear.”

This thread is dedicated to the one person who would have enjoyed it most

Tammy Gammon

She was a good influence here, but more than that, she was a good friend

If you had doubts, she would give encouragement

If you needed to talk, she would listen

There wasn’t anything that she wouldn’t do for a friend,
and God blessed us all with a friendship like hers

We miss you, Tammy

You were a real Texas flower

“The sweetest, funniest, kindest poster on the AI threads where I had the honor of ‘meeting’ her.” ~ Jrabbit

“Texasflower was an integral part of our ‘American Idol’ gang. She was always sweet and upbeat and kind to all.” ~ Palladin

“In the beginning of November I was thinking about her because the town I work in was having their elections and it reminded me about her Dad going to vote in the ambulance … I loved her and miss her.” ~ No More Apples

“She was unfailingly polite, and more than that. Kind, thoughtful, patriotic, encouraging. A blessing. She was one of my most favorite FReepers, and I do not say that very often. She was exceptional.”

“We never truly know how deeply our lives touch others. I certainly never communicated fully to Tammy how much her posts lifted me up, and I regret that. I assumed she would continue to be there and I would be able to keep responding to her appreciatively.

Heads up you fans of "Gray" Charles out there. Taylor Hick's CD has reached an auction record high of $69.00 at eBay.

If you're curious as to what it contains, here is a description of one of the many Taylor Hicks CDs being sold on eBay (one day left on auction already 19 bids and the price as of this writing is $56.00 ) :

Description (revised)

Item Specifics - Music: CDs
Genre: Pop Album Type: Full-Length CD
Sub-Genre: 2000-Now Condition: Used

Taylor Hicks' first ever CD "In Your Time" There were only a small amout of these pressed and it'll be hard to find another one out here. This was recorded in 1999 or 2000 and has a great version of "Georgia" 1. Son of a carpenter 2. The Fall 3. In Your Time 4. Somehow 5. On Broadway 6. Tighten Up 7. Georgia. ** This is a NR auction because I do not have artwork and there are a few scratches on the CD (but it's perfectly playable)

Unfreakin' believable. He hasn't been on TV for more than 20 minutes and people are acting as if he's going to be the next Elvis and actually "investing" in his future ( probably hoping to be able to sell the same CD in future for more money ). And note --- this CD only has 7 songs !!

I guess the Google stock frenzy also affects ordinary music fans. This is like people anticipating the next Van Gogh and buying into his presently obscure paintings.

Easy to pick the best this week. Mandisa demolished everyone.

Other decent performances:

Lisa
Katherine

So-so:

Paris(her worst so far, IMHO)
Melissa(enjoyed her this week more than I have in previous weeks but agree with Simon about the shouted song)
Kellie(still not a fan but weak peformances by some of the others boosted her status)

Weak:

Ayla(disappointing after the past two weeks' performances)
Kinnik(flat)

I think it'll be Kinnik gone this week along with...probably Melissa(or Ayla if not Melissa.)

There are many people who claim to be turned off by Taylor Hick's twitching and epileptic spasms.

Well, to the others who mention they don’t like the twitching. you have to watch more of Joe Cocker and others…

The twitching is EXACTLY what his fans DO like and what makes him so likeable and endearing to those who like this kind of music…

Performers FEELING the music coming out of their soul and communicating that CAN’T HELP BUT DO IT.

Have you ever gone to charismatic worship meetings and watch the people sing their hearts out in joy and ecstacy, and even spontaneously waving their hands and dancing to the music ?

THAT’s WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU *FEEL* THE MUSIC. AND THAT's WHAT TAYLOR HICKS DOES WHEN HE PERFORMS.

Put the song on (or another song you really feel) and when no one is around…..heh heh, let yourself go and DANCE, not a known dance....but what your body feels with the music and see what happens to ya!

Guys like Mick Jagger, Dave Matthews and even Roger Daltrey do it all the time.

Better still — go to one of them Vineyard Charismatic Worship services…. that’s EXACTLY what you see.

PEOPLE PERFORM BEST WHEN THEY *FEEL* THE MUSIC. That’s what Taylor does.

Here are several things you should notice about Taylor during his performance :

1) It was a pity the performance was limited to 2 minutes. This could’ve been an even bigger crowd rouser had it played out to 4 minutes ( the length of the original song ).

2) This is a performer’ song, not designed to show off your vocals in the first instance but your ability to entertain. In this sense, Taylor lighted up and got the crowd involved. It’s great to fire up people without having to shout “Get Up everybody !”

3) Notice the un-ending cheers and claps after the performance. Randy had to pause before he could get a word in. This was CLEARLY A SPONTANEOUS RESPONSE to his performance.

4) And here’s the kicker — WATCH SIMON’s REACTION AS TAYLOR WAS PERFORMING —— *ALL SMILES*. It’s hard to get that kind reaction from the man famous for bringing people down but Taylor simply brought it out from him.

5) I don’t know why Simon would call it a good radio performance. It was clearly meant to be LIVE with audience participation.

6) Listen to Michael McDonald's version of the song and Taylor Hick's version via AUDIO .... It IS ALMOST SIMILAR IT IS UNCANNY.

Many people equate Taylor to Ray Charles. I disagree. HIS VOICE IS MOST SIMILAR TO Michael McDonald ( frontman for the famed Doobie Brothers ).

FINAL THOUGHTS : We need a slow, serious song from Taylor next. GIVE US “GEORGIA” man. This will highlight your versatility and ability to do it all.

He’s a LOCK for the top 12. It took me 50 dials to get through him.

The next question would be this, what’s he going to sing when the dreaded theme nights kick in and your song choices are now significantly narrowed ? Let’s anticipate them …..(based on past themes that appear with regularity ) :

1) MOVIE NIGHT
2) MUSICALS
3) THE 90’s BILLBOARD
4) THE 80’s BILLBOARD
5) THE 70’s BILLBOARD
6) THE 60’s BILLBOARD
7) SONGS FROM THE YEAR YOU WERE BORN ( for Taylor, that would be 1977 ).
8) BILLBOARD TOP 100
9) I HEAR THEY MIGHT EVEN CLEAR LENNON-McCARTNEY
10) BIG BAND
11) MOTOWN

AND NOW HERE's A SPOILER --- MARCH 14 IS STEVIE WONDER NIGHT. Stevie will be there to introduce his music, songs and give each performer advise...

What do you suggest each of them choose as a song ?

Here are some of the OVERSANG and OVER-PERFORMED songs of Stevie Wonder ( sang at least twice by previous Idol contestants) which should not be done anymore...

1) You are the Sunshine of my life
2) My Cherie Amour
3) Overjoyed
4) All Is Fair in Love.

We might well experience some shockers tonight folks. Brace yourself.

There is a website called DIALIDOL.COM that tries to predict the chances of an Idol contestant being eliminated based on the frequency of business of their numbers as scanned by computers.

On the girls side, Dial Idol is predicting that Kinnick and Lisa (Yes I said Lisa NOT Melissa) will be the next to go.

I've always said that Simon sometimes does more harm than good by his constant pimping for and against a contestant. He did Latoya a lot of harm by telling Jasmine she was going to leave. I'll be darned of the folks from Hawaii and Daly City didn't dial their fingers off voting for Jasmine and killing off Latoya's chances of winning ( and for me, Latoya WAS the best singer in season 3. BETTER THAN FANTASIA ).

This year, it's happening again with Simon telling Meliisa to get an airplane ticket home and then pimping for Kellie ( to the point of saying he prefered her over Carrie Underwood ). Unfortunately, the victim here MIGHT BE Lisa Tucker. The powers that be wanted Melissa to go. What they will be getting instead would be the other Lisa.

On the guy’s side, Dial Idol is predicting that Will and Gedeon will be leaving us.

I am a bit surprised here because I thought Gedeon did very well last night--- MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN EITHER BUCKY or KEVIN.

Someone in this thread said that an abused puppy will be defended and that's exactly what Kevin is now perceived as -- an abused puppy. KEVIN GOT THE MOST BUSY SIGNALS LAST NIGHT.

Here are the Dial Idol stats :

OK Folks, let's look at my powers of prediction. IN A WORD --- NOT BAD. I PREDICTED 3 out of 4 OF THOSE WHO WOULD BE VOTED OUT.

Let's recap :

For the girls, I said :

WHO SHOULD GO : Kinnik ( sure thing ) and Ayla
WHO WILL GO : Kinnik and Melissa.

I was right in WHO SHOULD GO. What I did not forsee, was HOW MUCH MOST OF AMERICA FELT ABOUT SIMON's OUTRAGEOUS REMARK ABOUT MELISSA, WHO DID ( WHAT I ARGUE ), WAS A MORE INTERESTING PERFORMANCE THAN Ayla or Lisa.

We cannot question the decision to let Kinnik go home. She was in most parts, OFF KEY. Kinnik is a classy maturelady and we wish her well. Nothing more will be said of her. Heck, If it were me, I'd be happy with the experience and quietly go back to doing software ( what I do now ).

However, Melissa is improving every week and people relate to that. Of course poor Ayla is a victim of the anti-Simon backlash ( and there will be more believe me ). If Simon is right about one thing it is this --- Ayla is an OVERACHIEVER. She INSISTS on doing everything well. And here's her problem -- MOST OF AMERICA IS MADE UP OF COMMON FOLKS, not straight A athletes who were born with silver spoons who have basketball scholarships and whose parents are big shots.

What was Ayla's stated goal in life ? Look at the Official Idol website. It says :

If you don't make it on AMERICAN IDOL, what will you do?

Continue to play basketball at Boston College.

What are your personal goals in life?

To be a role model, to live a healthy and happy life, to continue to have a successful career in basketball.

What has been your proudest moment in life so far?

Being one of the few people in MA to be a 2000 point scorer.

If you couldn't sing, which talent would you most like to have?

To be a professional basketball player.

What is your definition of an AMERICAN IDOL?

To be a role model for their community, work with young people. Leading by example.

What's been your toughest obstacle in life?

Overcoming people's incorrect assumptions about me.

Think of it this way --- when you were growing up, did you ever hear your mother tell you how great your friend's kid is compared to you and then ultimately asking you that BANAL question that has been haunting you since then ----- WHY CAN'T YOU BE LIKE HER ?

And here's the rub -- TO MOST OF THE AMERICAN IDOL VOTING PUBLIC --- AYLA IS *THAT* OTHER GIRL !

On the other hand --- let's look at Melissa for a moment.... Melissa is that girl from Florida. Melissa is a music educaton teacher whose dream in life is to be a recording artist ( if she can ), Her stated goal is :

"To succeed in the music industry, have a beautiful marriage, and stay on the path with God."

Some other questions Melissa answered in her interview :

Most embarrassing moments?

My most embarassing moment was when I was competing in a beauty pagent and I broke a fire alarm sprinkler and flooded 2 floors and stopped the pageant.

What has been your proudest moment in life so far?

Where I am in my life right now, I have overcome so much.
What is your definition of an AMERICAN IDOL?

Someone America can identify with.

Who is your favorite judge and why?

Simon because he is honest.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

That I have had a very difficult life.

THERE YOU GO MY FRIENDS -- the last response says it all.

You have a woman (age 21) who has had a tough life versus a young girl whose main obstacle in life is to overcome people's incorrect assumptions about her. You also have a 17 year old with everything to look forward to, against a girl who spent her own money to fly from Florida to Denver just for a chance to get this far.

WHO WOULD MOST OF AMERICA RELATE TO ? And after Simon's unusually harsh ---- BOOK A TICKET HOME TO FLORIDA --- remark to Melissa ( who I argued gave a good rendition of her song ), WHO HAS THE SYMPATHY VOTE ?

So folks, let us not be surprised. FAIR OR UNFAIR, this isn't a purely singing competition. Unless your talent surpasses your competitors by a wide mile, when it comes to a neck and neck competition between two good singers who sing well, PEOPLE,(AKA THE MASSES) WILL :

A) Vote for the underdog ( Don't discount the sympathy vote. It's been proven to work EVERYWHERE In God's green earth ).

B) Rebel against TPTB when they make snotty and harsh remarks.

SO -- TO SIMON COWELL ( that British Twit who makes 1776 necessary ), LEARN A LESSON FROM THIS.

You inadvertedly sabotaged one of the best singers in Season 3 ( Latoya London) by telling Jasmine Trias to go home at number 4 ( after a valiant effort on her part to stay in the game), causing her to weep and thus winning the sympathy vote. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN ?

In this sense Ryan is right about his so called dream about Simon. WHAT SIMON LACKS IS THE ABILITY *CONTRUCTIVE* CRITICISM. Being honest has it's merits but being BRUTAL and HARSH will cause a voter backlash. That's essentially what happened.

So, in the tradition of Casablanca , let's say that I am shocked, SHOCKED, to see Ayla going home. Melissa deserved to be in the Top 12. She worked her as s off ( note the deliberate mis-spelling) . And I think Ayla did, too. They both tried really hard. And, at the end, when it was just the two of them standing there, I felt really sorry for Melissa, because it just wasn't fair. Then I felt horrible for Ayla. Because she was the designated victim due to just one off night ( after two good performances ).

I agree entirely with my wife who said to me that it's probably the first time she's ever failed - she was so clearly stunned. Hope she got a BIG hug from her parents when she left the stage, and kudos to her for pulling it together and getting into her song during the sing-out. I refuse to believe that being a senator's daughter has not opened doors for her that no one else had a shot at.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how hard you work or whose daughter you are, you still lose. Better to learn the lesson now. I never felt she really sang the songs, or had any feelings behind them the way say Taylor Hicks ( who really busted his buns doing music all of his life ) has.

TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT --- THE VOTE FOR MELISSA TO STICK IT TO SIMON CAMPAIGN WORKED !!

And now for the guys ....

Here were some of the predictions :

WHO SHOULD GO : Kevin and Will
WHO WILL GO : Will and Gedeon

Three guys most in danger of leaving:

Bucky( Doesn't have the "cuteness" appeal that the other two have going for them. Bet he's gone.)

Will(Actually has a nice voice. He's a bit dull though. Too bad he wasn't from the Donny Osmond era. I could see him on the cover of "Tiger Beat" from the late 60's-early 70's. Think he's probably gone.)

Kevin(Idol has been ragging on him pretty bad the past couple of weeks. I think it's going to have stirred up enough sympathy vote to keep him on especially if he gets teased again tonight. If someone is kicking a puppy, the puppy is going to be defended even if the puppy is goofy looking.)

Will Makar is really a given. I mean there are several reasons working against him :

1) He's a young white boy from America's leafy suburbs.

2) He's competing against a young white boy from another American leafy suburb who had the sympathy factor going for him ( there you go, I said it again).

3) He's a pretty boy competing against a pretty young adult (Ace). A demographic he can't win because people WILL CHOOSE the adult over the kid most of the time.

4) He isn't anything fantastic. To stay in the game, you have to be OUTSTANDING, not simply good, unfortunately, Will was just that --- ordinarily good and I said this already --- you can find hundreds of good-looking, talented teens like him all over the country.

5) Girls tend to mature faster that guys MOST OF THE TIME. Will Makar was not cultivated to be a TV performer since childhood the way Lisa Tucker and Paris Bennet are. Heck Paris' pedigree is something few people in the USA can match.

You can already see the absolute contrast between Will Makar and the A team of the males in this competition by simply watching the group song performed by the guys in this competition ( they sang the Eagle's TAKE IT EASY ). WHO STOOD OUT ? Answer : Taylor, Chris, Elliott and Ace. In fact after Taylor's short but soulful verse of "WE MAY LOSE AND WE MAY WIN !", Will Makar's next verse paled in comparison and he had to be covered by Taylor in the duet, and even in the duet, you already see a MARKED CONTRAST between a guy who has been singing most of his adult life and a spunky youth who is just starting out.

Poor Will. He had the talent, but no clue about how to aim and fire it. He went out with class. And that's too bad.

Will Makar NEEDS TO BE THE BASKETBALL EQUIVALENT OF LEBRON JAMES to play in the big leagues. Instead, he turned out to be A Sebastian Telfair (of the Portland Trailblazers). Passable, but needs MORE SEASONING to be a star. 'Nuff said.

Now here is my raging remark on the other dismissal .....

BS on Gedeon's dismissal, too. How ?

Yes, Kevin is as cute as a newly-fuzzed peach, But there is no way in Hell he deserves a Top 12 spot more than Gedeon, or near anybody, Will included. Will was the more polished performer of the two and this can already be seen in their group RAT PACK audition when they ( together with David Radford ) performed Tony Bennet's FLY ME TO THE MOON ( IN OTHER WORDS ). I thought Will Makar was the best of the 3 who survived.

But we only have 6 positions to fill and Kevin (although he of all people deserved to go ), got .. what else ?? THE SYMPATHY VOTE. As early as last week I predicted the CHICKEN LITTLE monicker they gave him will come back to haunt American Idol and Paris Bennet's chicken dance will garner more AWWW votes from the Mommies, Sis and Aunties out there. I WAS RIGHT.

Unfortunately, Gedeon (who performed Percy Sledge MASTERFULLY ) was the unfair victim of it all. Suffice it to say that Mr Potato head HAS A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM. He has a bright unforgettable smile, is a straight A student, has both parents intact ( rare for a black boy ( and that my friend is the statistical truth ) ), with talent to boot. At 17, his voice has surprisingly already sufficiently developed to be a good recording singer. But then, I wonder why Gedeon reminds me of someone who always is MAKING A PUBLIC SPEECH when he open his mouth to talk. Is it because he took too many classes in public speaking ? An inquiring mind wants to know....

I'm sorta glad Gedeon's going home. He needs to grieve properly for his father, and if I recall, he hasn't seen his mother since January. I think they'll both be glad to be reunited. He, too, is still a child, and I give him TONS of credit for persevering and putting on a brave face in light of all he's been through recently. I don't think he would have won, but boy, he probably would have been terrific on the concert tour! I hope he can make a way for himself in the world of music - I can see him becoming a huge gospel star - he's quite charasmatic and underneath it all, he can sing. His mentioning his faith in Jesus in his farewell speech gained tons of admiration from me. You realize that his absolute faith in Jesus will get him through fine - he really does feel glad to have made it so far.

I was spot on though when I said this of Kevin ...

Kevin IMHO is the one EXPECTED to be voted off tonight BUT STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED. The cute and cuddly factor does amazing things to the mothers, fathers, older sisters, unles and aunties who watch the show and THIS ALONE MIGHT GUARANTEE THAT HE WILL BE THE NEXT JOHN STEVENS. MARK MY WORDS !!

I won't be surprised if HE DOES NOT MAKE THE BOTTOM 3 TONIGHT ( Again, Mark my words ).

Kevin is destined to be the John Stevens of the competition. People will keep him simply because they want to see what he'll be doing next and then eventually say ---ENOUGH ALREADY, and send him back home to Levittown ( which will give him a Sunday parade ) sometime on April.

I am happy for Bucky, though. I voted for him, before I posted until the lines closed. The first time I ever did that, and I can't explain why to this day. He grew on me.

I want to see him shackled to 19E, eternally. When he was standing there, with Gedeon, it almost broke my heart. Honestly. You could see him fighting back the tears, trying to take it like a man, and I felt horrible. I actually care about this one. And that's why he's on the show. He got under their skin, and they though he might get under ours, and make us care, even though we swore never to, again. Mission accomplished. I wasn't as happy for him as he was for himself, but... I hope he can survive to give us one more week.

IF ONLY BECAUSE I'M CURIOUS TO SEE HOW GARTH BROOKS WOULD SING A STEVIE WONDER SONG....

ONLY IN AMERICAN IDOL FOLKS !!

AND NOW FOR ONE MORE COMMENT :

The BRITTENUMS WERE IN THE AUDIENCE ! Out of the joint and dressed like angels. WHAT ON EARTH ARE THEY DOING HERE ? THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE SINGING IN JAIL !! DID THE SHADY GUY MO THEY'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET THE OTHER TWO TWINS TO CONTACT, HELP THEM OUT ?

NOW FOR MORE PREDICTIONS FOR THE TOP 12 IN THE COMING WEEKS :

Kevin, Melissa and most likely Bucky are going to be the villains/targets, out of the gate.

I have to say something about the performance of Taylor Hicks the other night...

Some people call his dance awkward and I totally agree.

BUT NOTE --- Some of the most iconic stage moves are "not natural"; i.e., practiced: Chuck Berry's duck-walk; James Brown's fall-down-and-get-the-cape bit; Elvis' leg gyrations; Jerry Lee Lewis' foot-on-the-piano-keys, etc...

From some of my friends who live in Birmingham ( and yes, I am a New Yorker who has Alabama friends), people who have seen pre-AI Taylor say this IS HIM, for good or ill.

Taylor is unlike someone like Katharyn or Ayla. You can see from this ladies that they're voices are TRAINED. From the inflection to their ability to control and sustain notes, you can see that they have had voice lessons for years. NOT SO TAYLOR. This man is different.

I was a fan of Taylor's from the moment a 29-year-old kid with gray hair walked into his American feaking Idol audition and told Simon he was there to have his voice heard and Randy laughed in the background.

He starts with ....

"I was boooooooooooooorn by the river..."

Paula's initial reaction is something I still replay. Then, 20 seconds of Ray Charles later, Randy couldn't contain a smile.

This is someone you root for in life. Someone who isn't trained but let's the music POSSESS HIM.

I was disappointed last week with the "woos". I was hoping against hope he'd bring it tonight.

But....Holy Moses ! he leveled the place. I'll tell you the exact moment I knew the rafters would end up as toothpicks -- the second verse, "I was raised here in this living hell", in the pause afterward he took a GULP. Not a nervous gulp, but a this-whole-song-is-inside-me-but-it's-too-early-to-let-it-out GULP. I heard myself say "HOLY SMOKE". You could feel the anticipation, the energy building and building.

This wasn't a vocal, it was a PERFORMANCE.

And the LOOK at the end. The same rifling glare we saw after Ain't No Sunshine brought him to his knees. We finally saw it and WOW. That was Pacino saying "I'll take a FLAMETHROWER to this place!"

This is why I watch this show.

This is someone I root for.

He is like nothing else I have ever seen. He's why I love music. I have bemoaned the fact that music has gotten way too neat since MTV, too polished, too painted. Give me Taylor and his passion and his messiness and awkward dancing any day of the week over the crap we see currently.

And oh yeah, regarding his first job as the Easter Bunny --- that was one of my jobs too at Six Flags years ago. Believe me, you earn every penny of it -- THOSE THINGS ARE HOT AND UNCOMFORTABLE INSIDE. And you make kids happy doing that ! Taylor was born to entertain and that's why I watch TV.

Debbie Harry Addicted to American Idol

3/10/06

Blondie star Deborah Harry is addicted to TV show American Idol, and insists most of the contestants have more talent than she did in her youth.

The Rapture singer is a huge fan of the program and watches the competition to learn from the young wannabes.

She says, "I always think when I watch this, 'Oh, my God, I would've never gotten this far!'

"It's just sort of analytical for me. I feel like it improves my learning curve. There's no accounting for taste.

"If a person is technically good, you know, there's all these variables.

"Kids are very brave for doing it."

SIMON PREDICTS KELLIE, CHRIS AND TAYLOR FOR THE TOP 3 ( ALSO SHEDS TEAR FOR AYLA !!! )

http://extratv.warnerbros.com/v2/news/0306/10/1/text.html

'American Idol's' Top 12 Celebrating like Celebrities March 10, 2006

From the after party to the red carpet, the top 12 "American Idol" contestants were on a natural high after last night's elimination round.

"It doesn't get any better than this!" exclaimed small town girl, Kellie Pickler. "I can't believe I'm standing here on the red carpet with you!"

From the cheers to the tears, and in the limo with Bo Bice, only "Extra" has "Idol" covered! Out Terri Seymour was with the newly named top 12 finalists as they celebrated like celebrities.

"I have fans!" said Ace Young as he walked inside, where "Extra" found Gedeon flashing his trademark smile even after unexpectedly getting the boot last night. Gedeon made an emotional exit along with Kinnik, Will and Ayla, whose goodbye made Mr. Mean melt. "I saw a tear," confirmed Randy Jackson. "I finally saw a tear from Simon's eye."

Simon did seem a bit broken up but he was quickly back to Judge Dread, making this prediction about fan favorite Kevin Covais.

"He won't be winning this competition," Simon assured. "You heard it here first." But Kevin's not backing down. "You'll be seeing me, I think so," Kevin promised his loyal "Idol" fans.

And while last season's runner up Bo Bice returned to the "American Idol" stage last night, he also had words for Simon who once predicted winner Carrie Underwood would outsell him.

"I want to tell you something, Mr. Busta nuggets. She's leaving me in the dirt, Simon," Bo confessed, whose own debut album has almost gone platinum!

So, who are Simon's pick this time around? "It'll be between Kellie, Taylor and Chris," Simon predicted.

The top 12 face off on "American Idol" next week on FOX!

Here is a very interesting take on The History of Stevie Wonder songs on American Idol which some of you might want to read in preparation for Stevie Wonder theme night.

The article gives a history of Stevie Wonder song performances ( both good and bad ) and suggests song choices to contestants as well as predicts who can do well and who should worry.

Difficult to rate tonight's performances.

Top group:

Taylor(always entertaining)
Chris(great performer whose billy-goat vibrato bothers me a little at times, but only a little)
Katharine(very nice voice and warming up a bit)
Lisa(lovely girl and her voice is pretty but small)
Mandisa(not her best night but even on an off night she's better than most)
Paris(good performer but I agree with those who think she's annoying)

So-so:

Elliot(still one of the best if not the best singer but has to do something to up the excitement factor)
Bucky(did better than I expected)

Bottom group:

Kellie(not a good night for her)
Melissa(really had trouble singing in tune tonight)
Ace(thought he would have been able to do better than that with Wonder)

Off the Scale:

Kevin(...yet I can't look away)

It's Stevie Wonder night on "American Idol," which is both good news and bad news for the contestants depending on who will be singing what.

On the one hand, it gives the singers a chance to meet a true musical legend, and that overwhelmed many of them. Kellie Pickler and Elliott Yamin were openly crying when he walked in the room to meet them. Ace Young said, "I'm overjoyed and overwhelmed, and today I am very satisfied with my life." (c'mon man, Stevie Wonder might be a legend, but he isn't the Messiah you know ).

Eliott Yamin added, "The fact that I actually got to sit down by the man himself … that's something I'm going to be able to carry with me forever." ( to which I say -- I once had the chance to shake hands with Jackie Chan in Taiwan and ended up thanking God that I am not that short, but that's another story. THAT I will carry for the rest of my life as well :) ).

Let's put it this way .... Stevie Wonder is the sort of artist that contestants are well-advised to avoid trying to copy. His vocals are intricate, and the standard he sets is very hard to live up to. His style in unique and YOU KNOW IT IS HIM JUST BY LISTENING TO HIM SING.

The inevitable result is that people who try and sing his songs get slammed by the judges for their efforts (as Katharine McPhee was for her rendition of ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE). It seemed like a recipe guaranteed to cause headaches for judges and contestants alike, particularly since the show itself was two hours long. One of you sent me an e-mail and stated that 90% of Stevie Wonder songs performed in American Idol are not done well. AMEN TO THAT.
However, it is a tribute to the man that people find his songs worth performing. That means that they ARE ENJOYABLE and WORTH SINGING. But --- Many a would be idol have fallen by the wayside ( both male and female ) trying to reach his standard. TPTB ( That's The Powers That Be to folks from Rio Linda ) finally realized that they have to accept the inevitable and invite the man himself and celebrate his music. But this isn't going to be the last of it I can guarantee that.

LET's SUMMARIZE THE NIGHT ....

The first half of the night lived DOWN to those expectations, as many struggled to come close to the Wonder standard. But the singers improved as the night wore on.

HERE IS THE BLOW BY BLOW....

Ace Young, 25, Denver, Colo.: Ace opened the show with "Do I Do." The last one who did this song was the guy who could have won had he not left prematurely last season --- MARIO VASQUEZ. Mario absolutely did Stevie proud and Ace would be compared to that performance if people remembered it. Question --- DID ACE LIVE UP TO IT ? In a word --- NO. NOT ONLY DID HE NOT TOP MARIO, HE DISAPPOINTED ( BIG TIME as Dick Cheney would say ).

Right from the start his vocals are strained and flat, consistently on every single top note in the verse. Many, many clunckers. Ace reminds me of J.J. Reddick's off night shooting for Duke University.

It got better at the chorus, but the bridge was just plain odd and not good at all. He is a good performer. I will give him that much, but honestly, he really does not have a better voice than Constantine ( the guy he's being compared to ). And Mario beats him by a wide mile. The song was just too big for him. His vocals took a vacation to Aruba. Whatever it is, If Ace continues like this ( and he's had several off nights already ), his good looks can only take him so far. This is a singing contest, not an ogling one.

Kellie Pickler, 19, Albermarle, N.C.: In fairness, this theme is not a format that was designed to showcase her voice.

Before she went onstage she said, "I have no idea what I'm doing." Of course, Wonder has sang and written an awful lot of songs, so it's hard to imagine Pickler couldn't have come up with something that worked a little better for her. C'mon girl you don't live far from the city, is Stevie Wonder so unknown and unplayed in your part of the woods ? She is, of course, not that familiar with Stevie Wonder, or anything that wasn't under the large, countrified, rock she's been hiding under.

However, she still cried tears of excitement when she met him. She admits to having no confidence in herself in this genre. Honestly, if you are a singer, you should be able to have some kind of fricking variety. If you have no variety, you can be called a one trick pony, but not a singer. There's something very cunning and wiley about Kellie that gets to me --- IT's THE BE-KIND-TO-ME, I'M-JUST-A-POOR-NAIVE-COUNTRY-GIRL -- routine she plays on us every week. This works for guys like me most of the time. I'm a sucker for poor underdogs and helpless, pretty women ( especially the New York kind who pulls your heartstrings on the subways ). You can part me and my money very easily with this kind of trick but I'm slowly learning but am not very good at it ( YET).

Anyway, about the song. She has an okay start, she looks BEAUTIFUL, but it is just a weird song on her voice. Like trying to fit a two outlet plug into a 3 outlet socket.

She isn't even attempting to stifle the country twang at all. I'm kind of uncomfortable, but at the same time, it isn't awful. She has a really nice, smoky moment on "what I am feeling," but it is just that, a moment. She attempted to connect emotionally, but it was just all VERY ANTI-CLIMACTIC, and strange. The key was awful for her.

If there is any justice, hers was one of the worst performances EVER on this season. However, I'll predict this --- Kellie is going to skate through on her one liners for some time, she is the funniest thing to hit AI ever. For example, she got her shoes on sale, she's trying not to bust the seam of her dress, she has false eyelashes and they feel like tarantulas (sp), etc etc etc.

But I'm getting to be a little wary. She uses the word -- ARACHNOPHOBE. She knows the word yet does not know what Calamari is ? Can you believe this naive schtick she's trying to play on us ???

The thing with Pickler is that even when she doesn't sing well, she has that disarming charm that gets people to forgive her. Guys will vote for her if only she makes them feel protective, manly and in control. That is why WOMEN ARE REALLY THE STRONGER GENDER.

Elliott Yamin, 27, Richmond, Va.: Eliott was the most emotional at the whole Stevie Wonder experience. Elliott obviously adores Stevie, and it was nice to see that Stevie was quite impressed by Elliott. This is the Elliott, you must remember, who absolutely knocked me off my feet ( the song he will sing tonite ) with his outstanding rendition of the same Stevie Wonder's ---- IF YOU REALLY LOVE ME.

That said, I have to say that I was not excited with the song choice -- KNOCKS ME OFF MY FEET. Let's summarize ---- This was not Elliott's best performance ( blame it on the song ), but still light , he beats Ace and Kellie by a country mile.

Let me say this ---- Elliott has a voice that rivals Clay Aiken's. Right from the start there were way cool runs. There was perhaps one or two uncertain notes , but I just love listening to his soothing voice and he had a dynamite ending.

THE KID CAN SING. What Eliott lacks is stage presence. He has to work on being comfortable on stage. I think the big stage just overwhelmed him. That will come with experience though. BUT HIS SUPPORTERS MUST BE RABID ENOUGH TO KEEP HIM. I voted for him a few times.

But then to have the great Stevie Wonder tell you that : "You should definitely do this as a profession," is probably enough to make the whole experience worthwhile.

I hate to agree with Simon when he said it the best so far but it didn’t have the wow factor.

BOTTOM LINE L It was a good rendition of a Stevie Wonder song but not great. Unfortunately, YOU HAVE TO BE GREAT TO BE UNFORGETTABLE. Espcially if you are Eliott Yamin and you don't look like Ace Young.

Next, we come to the girl who Simon says needs a bigger stage -- WELL SHE's GOT IT. WHAT'LL SHE DO NOW ??
Mandisa, 29, Antioch, Tenn.: Mandisa chooses the song ---> "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," and was clearly the best of the pack of first 4 group of singers. You don't need to study quantum physics to know that Mandisa would not have to fear tonight. She grew up on Stevie, and we now know she has well moisterized ankles. Thanks Ryan. Ryan proceeds to help her by taking off herhigh heels ( which she was afraid would break because of her --- HOW SHALL I PUT IT NICELY --- Girth ). That's what the viewers get for allowing Fox to get away with a two-hour show. From then on -- she performed BARE-FOOTED ( How I would have loved to see her break the heels though ).
In the practice session, Stevie was very impressed with Mandisa and thinks she can sing anything. Can't disagree with that.

She looks gorgeous (in a heavy sorta way ) and while she started low, she pumped it up later with a magnificent jump to a high belt. She turns up the heat in the middle, and it is finally much better than the initial verse.
OK folks, this isn't comparable to her "I'M EVERY WOMAN" performance the other night. But thus far, she was the best ( as Simon puts it ). Mandisa is in no danger of being booted off. CONSISTENCY is her name and we'll be seeing more of her till late May ( I predict ).

Of all the adult contestants I feared for the most this night, it would be Bucky Covington. His style is southern country rock and how that would melt to Stevie Wonder's songs is something only American Idol can offer. YES FOLKS --- GARTH BROOKS MEETS STEVIE WONDER -- Only in AI folks, only in AI.

Bucky Covington, 28, Rockingham, N.C. : The bar was set pretty low for Covington, since Stevie Wonder tunes don't exactly fit into his country-rock library. Bucky admits that stuff like this doesn’t happen everyday in his hometown. He has never owned a Stevie album or even listened to them. He heard ‘Superstition’ & wanted to go buy the album. Stevie gives him great constructive criticism and told Bucky when he gets excited he gets a little sharp so watch that.

SUPERSTITION WAS A CLEVER, CLEVER CHOICE Bucky my man ( are you sure it isn't his twin covering for him ?? ).

Amazingly, the man worked it out. Heck right from the start he was already better than Kellie or Ace. Bucky tried to rock it out. Some of it worked but most did not. However, Like Tim Mcgraw he knows how to work the stage. The growl in his voice fits the song too. After all, country folks can be superstitious.

And Simon --- enough of the Jessica Simpson hairstyle comment. It wasn't Bucky's idea.

let me admit to you folks, I ENJOYED THIS PERFORMANCE. Not because it had great vocals, but because you don't get to see things like this occur everyday. Let's put it this way --- Do you ever see Tiger Woods play basketball and play it quite passably without making a fool of himself ? PRECISELY WHAT I THINK OF BUCKY's PEFORMANCE.

The man was one of the lowest vote getters though and isn't on a very secure footing. The fact that he does not know how to pull the heartstrings like Kellie does isn't a harbringer of good things.

AHH WHO DO WE HAVE HERE --- THE SURVIVOR HERSELF ....

In the intro clip, Melissa said it has been insane working like 17-hour days. It is a roller coaster she doesn’t want to get off of. Her voice has been sore but has been gargling olive oil. She said it is intimidating to sing in front of Stevie but messing up one of his lyrics was mortifying. Stevie caught it right away & stopped her. She chose ‘Lately’ & hopes to overcome her nerves. Remember who sang LATELY last ? Well well well, MARIO VASQUEZ got into HOLLYWOOD singing this song A CAPELLA.

Melissa must be nervous because unlike Gedeon, who promised not to forget his lyrics after a disastrous audition, she forgot some of the lyrics to "Lately" in her rehearsal with Wonder, then promptly went out and did the same thing onstage when it mattered. This is like giving her the free throw when the clock has one second left and her team is losing by 1. A clutch performance, it wasn't.
That said, there's this thing with Melissa where despite it all, you end up liking her. Despite some shaky notes and lyrics, and a couple rocky moments, she fights through it and you want to root for her. She does have a good HUSKY voice.

Think of yourself as a teacher in class... you've got a student who isn't the brightest but who has the enthusiasm to do well and tries her darndest to impress and somehow, does well in the end -- THAT's MELISSA FOR YOU. She isn't the most talented vocally, but BOY DOES SHE TRY and DOES SHE GET BETTER !!

I agree with Paula here .... Paula said she should wear dresses more often. She messed up the lyric but when she opened up her mouth to sing there is something very soothing about her voice & she loves it. Her voice is different from any other voice in the competition.

Now I want you to notice the REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY Simon Cowell is playing.... He says : "In my opinion, this was your best performance so far." Nope, it's not that Simon suddenly likes her by complimenting her on a night she forgot the lyrics to her song.

NO -- SIMON LEARNED HIS LESSON BY NOT BEING CRUEL AND TALKING ABOUT TICKETS BACK HOME. He is now reversing the psychology -- hoping to be a little nice and hoping that the fans pick up from there and REALLY send her home and not give her the anti-Simon vote.

EVIL is EVIL, even when they're trying to play nice ( see the witch in Narnia for instance ).

Now who do we have next --- THE DEFINITE COVER GIRL FOR SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE HERSELF -- THE LOVELY AND GRACIOUS AND SOOO POISED 16 YEAR OLD LISA TUCKER.

Lisa tells us that she has watched AI from the 1st season but didn’t put 2 & 2 together & didn’t think she would meet Stevie. She chose ‘Signed, Sealed Delivered’. Stevie asked her what she normally sings & she said Whitney songs. Well of course... All Lisa has done thus far is do SLOW BALLADS. Let's see how she does with up-tempo songs.
OK, the youngest lady in the competition looked very polished singing "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours."
OK, She is a good performer, but I mean, what else do you expect from a girl who has been doing it since she was 10 ?
But her transition from high to low , which was supposed to sound soulful was awkward, throaty, and pitchy. Her vibrato did not deliver (the third word of the title ) at all. Compared to Paris, the other precocious teenage girl, I think she is begining to pale in comparison.

The title of the song was SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED. She did the first two but didn't do the last.

Karl Malone, THE MAILMAN, DELIVERS, Lisa still needs to work at the vocal post office to learn how to do it.

Lisa will stay on, if only because her's was not the worst performance tonight. BUT IT LEAVES MUCH TO BE DESIRED. If it's any consolation, I LOOOVE TO SEE HER SMILE.

Next, we come to the kid with the most number of monickers. He's the youngest of the group of males and has been called everything from a "sex symbol" to chicken little. Yes, I'm talking about my Long Island neighbor -- Kevin Covais, the SINGING BABY.

It's bizarre, but somewhere along the way, with all the accolades and hype being heaped upon him, it's as if Covais has actually started to believe that he's really a gangsta. He talked about being a sex symbol.

And here's a lesson to you folks out there -- FAME HAS A WAY OF GETTING TO YOUR HEAD, Especially when you get it too young. You think all the adoration heaped on you makes you worthy and you begin to harbor delusions of grandeur. Kevin is begining to believe all his hype ( just as George Clooney is beginning to think his films can change the world simply because he got nominated 4 times).

Kevin said the whole experience is amazing & the best is having fans in the audience with signs. Some little girls come on stage & give him their sign. Kevin said it was incredible meeting Stevie & he was in awe. He was a bit nervous. Stevie told him to relax & just breathe.

And what song does he choose ? HECK, a song that does not fit his age -- PART TIME LOVER !! What an icky song choice for him. Do you really want to hear him sing this song knowing that he and his girlfriend connived to "break up" so that he can "look" available to the rest of America and get more teen votes ?? I hear someone say -- YES ( because that may be what the song is about and the kid is learning from the lyrics ).

On second thought, I think this may be a good pick for his voice. Stevie said Kevin brought fun to the song.

Well there's a difference between FUN and FUNNY. For me, it was the later. There are some sharp notes and a couple of nice moments in the middle. Then at the end there were some surprising, actualy soulful, solid runs. But his dance and moves jut reminded me of the DANCING BABY video from Ally Mcbeal.

GREAT CLASSIC EXCHANGE :

Simon Cowell : "This is the part in the show where Stevie Wonder turns down the sound. It was appalling." – Simon Cowell.

Kevin's response: "That's OK. I wasn't expecting much out of you anyway." – WHOA, THE REJOINDER OF THE SEASON !!!

Please folks, let the kid go now. He's had a good run ( but my bet is no one will listen and I dread him being the John Stevens or Scott Savol of this season ).

Now folks -- IF THERE IS ANY GIRL WHOSE IMAGE *AND* TALENT FITS SIMON's MARKETING IDEA OF THE AMERICAN IDOL -- IT's GOT TO BE Katharine McPhee, 21, Los Angeles.

She has the looks, the personality and the talent and voice to boot. But America is getting to be wise and slowly looking past the PHYSICAL ASSETS to look at QUALITY.

Katharine said if asked out of anyone in the industry who would she want to work with she would say Stevie. She was in awe ( why am I repeating this word ? I guess I gotta look up a thessaurus ) when he walked in.

Katharine chooses the song ‘Until You Come Back To Me’. Stevie thinks she has a lot of potential.

FOLKS, Let me tell you this. My Neighbor lent me a copy of the record made by the Idol contestants of Season 3 and guess who absolutely LIT UP THIS SONG AND IMPRESSED ME ??? Wanna take a guess if you didn't hear the record ? ANSWER -- THE MUCH MALIGNED Hawaiian -- CAMILLE VELASCO. What spunk, what attitude and what hip-hop. Camille's version of this song made me want to hear it over and over again.

But note -- Camille was RECORDING IT IN STUDIO. That's VERY DIFFERENT from singing it live before 30 million people and on a wide stage. In this venue, There are NO TAKES and every single mannerism is scrutinized and pikced on NO END. So, Having heard that from another Idol contestant, I was curuiously anticipating Kate's version of the song.

FIRST UP ---- HER WARDROBE DOES NOTHING TO DISPEL THE RUMOR THAT SHE's PREGNANT. Fire your stylist girl !!

Back to her performance.

IMHO, She didn’t seem nervous at all & was the best of the night so far. This was a very strong performance from someone who was bashed earlier in the competition for daring to sing a Stevie Wonder song. I NEVER WORRY FOR KATHARINE. She's always on key and she could never sing a bum note even if she tried.

Simon tries to compare her to Kelly ( UNFAIRLY ) , but then he's tried to compare Kellie to Carrie. THEY DON'T MATCH.

Don't get me wrong -- Kate is VERY BEAUTIFUL. If she does not remind you of Kate Holmes, she reminds you of Catherine Zeta Jones ( notice the similarities on their first names ? Something about the name Katherine or Katharine, or Catherine makes you go up to be sultry looking. BUT BEWARE THE NAME KATRINA !!!! ).

The problem Ihave with Katharine is she's trying for this cutesy personality, and Kelly naturally is just that way.

How do you compare Kathraine and Kelly ? HMMMM... I believe that Kelly has more OOOMPH and Soul in her than Katharine could muster. We'll have to see the next few weeks because Katharine is in NO DANGER of going home.

Let's here it for the man who I still think isn't leveling with us about his true age ( Am I going to be in trouble with the PETGHA ? ( People for the Ethical Treatment of Gray Haired Artists ) ? Talyor Hicks, 29, Birmingham, Alabama ( with a question mark after the 29 ).

First of all, Taylor gets brownie points from me for pointing out that Stevie Wonder actually is an American Idol, and not in the reality television sense of the word. If there's anyone in this competition who FITS the Stevie Wonder mold -- IT's HIM. HE HAS ALREADY DONE THE HEAD BUBBLING BACK AND FORTH THING. SO WHY NOT ? All Taylor has to do is choose the right song. Stevie remarked after hearing him that he was BORN TO DO THIS.

The gray-haired wonder picks, "Living for the City"  — he's a genius at getting the crowd rocking. I totally knew he would sing this! Stevie believed him and I did to.
This venue ( THE BIGGER STAGE) was made for Taylor and Paris. IT GIVES ROOM FOR THEM TO UNLEASH THEIR LATENT ENERGY. The little stage of the pre-top 12 competition is really too SMALL for them as Taylor AND Paris are PERFORMERS FIRST AND FOREMOST.

How to explain the performance -- IT STARTED GREAT AND THE AUDIENCE WERE CLEARLY INTO IT. But 3/4 of the way , the whole "nanana' section was useless for him, as was spinning instead of singing. He was the most comfortable so far. He definitely was fearless. He puts his whole heart into every performance. And notice this ---- HE HOLDS HIS HARMONICA JUST RARING TO PLAY IT ON THE SHOW !!
LET ME ASK YOU -- THIS IS SIMON COWELL's IDEA OF A COMPLIMENT, DO YOU AGREE :

"Your appeal is, you're like every dad who goes to a wedding, gets drunk, goes onstage and sings. The difference is, you can sing."

Now, let me tell you why I am rooting for Taylor Hicks. BOTTOM LINE ---- OF ALL PEOPLE IN THIS SHOW, HE DESERVES FAME THE MOST.

Here is a man whose dad adviced to get into a profession that pays the bills ( and his dad, a dentist was ready to pass on his practice to Taylor if only he'd study the profession ).

Taylor refused simply because HE LOVES HIS MUSIC AND WANTS TO PERFORM. For 10 years, the man spend blood, sweat and tears going to every joint trying to get his voice heard. He wrote songs about traveling all these years barely getting by....he rents a small apartment and sleeps in an old couch and tells us that that's the first thing he is going to upgrade if he wins enough dough to have a better lifestyle.

He spends his own money to produce a CD of his own written songs.

ALL FOR WHAT ??? FOR THE MUSIC OF COURSE !!

He just loves his music and wants to share it with the world. HOW CAN YOU NOT SUPPORT THE MAN ? If American idol is all about finding the best undiscovered talent in the country, you can't get any better than Taylor Hicks.
Taylor must have spent many frustrating years trying to get people to hear his CD until he said to himself, ENOUGH WITH THIS --- IF I WANT TO BE HEARD, I GOT TO GO TO THE VENUES THAT GIVES THE BEST CHANCE FOR THIS TO HAPPEN.
IF AMERICAN IDOL's GOAL IS TO PICK THE BEST UNDISCOVERED TALENT, YOU CAN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS -- A MAN TOTALLY FOCUSED AND DEDICATED TO HIS MUSIC.

Put it this way --- Have you ever busted your buns working for your company for years and then suddenly, out of the blue, some young punk who has an MBA from Harvard is hired for top management with stock options to boot and starts uprooting the company in order to boost the price of his stock options. How would you feel about the man ?? How would you feel if he got wealthy and you lost your job and you see him LIONIZED in the cover of FORTUNE MAGAZINE ?

That's how I feel about young upstarts getting fame and fortune over talented and dedicated guys like TAYLOR who has REALLY BUSTED HIS BUNS TRYING TO MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF.

TAYLOR DESERVES FAME and IN FACT, I WANT HIM TO WIN A GRAMMY AND SELL ALBUMS AND GET THE FAME THAT JOE COCKER AND RAY CHARLES HAVE. That will show that America still rewards talent and hard work.

NEXT, WE COME TO THE OTHER PRECOCIOUS TEEN WITH THE ROYAL SINGING PEDIGREE FROM THE SOUTH -- PARIS BENNET.
She owns one of the few best pre-Hollywood auditions ever, but in the ensuing weeks, managed to underwhelm.

Stevie tell us he is reminded of Fantasia, but honestly, I like Paris's voice better, or at least I did in Hollywood.

This stage is made for an electric performer like Paris. Though she's only a teenager, Paris sings like she's been onstage since birth and feels no pressure at all. She did a stellar job with "All I Do," and did nothing to lose her status as one of the favorites to win the competition.

Tonight she won me back over with a solid vocal, and an exciting performance. My initial faith in her has returned now. This girl is on tonight. I thought it was really good. I guess they saved all the good performances for the end of the night.

Unlike the previous weeks, I don't think her grandma made any serious attempt at influencing her song choice. SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GIVE SOMEONE THE FREEDOM TO CREATE ?
Between Lisa and Paris, Paris is the better performer, the more versatile and easily the more fun to watch. Paris will outlast Lisa the longer they last.

FINALLY, WE HAVE THE SECOND COMING OF BON JOVI ----> Chris Daughtry -- he of the bald head.

Chris closed the night again ( the second time this season ). He tells us that when he found out it was Stevie Wonder night he was worried he wouldn’t find the right song for his genre. But then came across ‘Higher Ground’ and remembered the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ cover. Stevie said Chris sounded sincere. Chris hopes to take both versions & blend them together to make something unique.

OK, let's give him props for being innovative. But let's not give him props for being unable to get out of his comfort zone. Between Chris and Taylor, the later is obviously the more VERSATILE, able to cross more genres.

But I thought Chris was quiote inventive as I could clearly hear both version in his vocal. Randy said what is cool about him is every week he figures out a way to make it his own and I agree.

Having said that , let me tell you ways that I AM NOT IMPRESSED by this performance inspite of the obvious PIMP ING by the judges --- THE SHOW IS 40% STROBELIGHTS, FLOODLIGHTS and EFFECTS, 20% BACKGROUND RIFFS and just 40% VOCALS ( neat runs are there I admit ).

It is more of an effects performance than any other and for that, he loses points with me. Here is a big IF ----- IF Chris Daughtry can find a way to turn everything into a rock song, and if rock is what the majority of the audience wants, he'll win this competition.

But will the theme nights guarantee that you can rock every night ?

THAT IS THE OVER_RIDING QUESTION.

Here's how the scores go ( FROM BEST TO WORSE ) :

1. Paris
2. Taylor
3. Chris
4. Katharine
5. Mandisa
6. Eliott
7. Bucky
8. Lisa
9. Melissa
10. Kevin
11. Ace
12. Kellie

WHO SHOULD GO : Kellie

WHO WILL GO : Bucky or Melissa

A little recap of last night's elimination process...

Well, we all know the results by now.

HERE ARE THE SURPRISE RESULTS :

Ace, the hot-looking John Travolta look-alike golden boy and one-time fav to win is in the bottom three !!

Kevin, the bespectacled, nerdy little choir boy, with more chutzpah than vocal talent, is safe.

And on cue, the audience starts booing.  TPTB are playing this up again.

Kevin--who has been cast as the foil and the boy-who-stays-too-long in a sitcom that involves singing--was put right to work fulfilling his appointed role in this particular season of AI ( as I said before, every season must have it's John Stevens and Scott Savol ).  I know, I know, most of you are now disliking the kid, but PLEASE DON'T.

He's just doing what he was "hired" to do and relishing it all ( script and all ).

And despite his what-duck-walk-was-he-doing performance last night (or maybe because of it?) he's playing his role it quite well, if I sau so myself.

So chill out folks and settle down.

But let's all be realistic...

Ace Young in the bottom three isn't exactly the big surprise it's cracked up to be anyway.  Ace has had only one really good performance since the start of the semis, George Michael's --"Father Figure." ( I told him to sing another WHAM song -- CARELESS WHISPER, but he isn't listening to me ). And the last two weeks, he's been performing as if he was just coasting through.

Personally, I thought Ace was over-hyped from the beginning.  Now, I think the American TV watcher is seeing through the pimpage.  If Ace wants to stay in the game, he's going to have to step it up, period.  Not surprisingly, he was the first to sit down.  He dodged a bullet. Now he has to change his strategy.

I believe Ace is capable of  a good performance--he just needs to choose better songs. You know, the ones that fit his range and style. Stevie Wonder's intricate key changovers are a bit much for him.  At this point, though, I think Ace is strictly middle of the pack.  If he leaves in 5th place that will be very good for him. As I said before, this is a singing competition and LOOKS can only get you so far.

And why should we be surprised at the next one --Melissa McGhee ? Were you underwhelmed as I was ? Who didn't see that coming?  Not Melissa herself. Who already seemed to have a premonition ( the word she failed to sing in her song ) that it would be her on that SEAL.

Now here'a a big surprise to most fans but not to my trained, critical eye/ear ---- LISA TUCKER.

For those who have been paying attention, I remember one of you telling me that Lisa should not be in the bottom anything and I said I begged to differ. I SAID THAT LISA's LAST FEW PERFORMANCES HAVE BEEN FORGETTABLE AND IS IN *VERY* GRAVE DANGER OF BEING ELIMINATED ( outstanding pre-final auditions exempted ). I WAS RIGHT ( as Simon would say ).

Therefore, Lisa Tucker's appearance in the bottom 3 didn't surprise me either.  She's a beautiful, poised young girl who definitely has talent, but hasn't done much to distinguish herself in the competition.  Her performances are COMPETENT, but FORGETTABLE.  I don't sense much buzz around Lisa.  Contestants who don't ignite passions in either direction are usually the first to go.  I don't think she'll place higher than nine.  At this point, I don't see how Lisa could improve her game quickly. Lisa needs a few more years to mature, to grow, to really get into it ( like for example, Kate Mcphee who is 21 ).

REMEMBER -- THIS IS AS MUCH A MARKETING/PR GAME AS A SINGING COMPETITION. In this sense -- Taylor and Chris Daughtry already win a lot hands down. Kevin Covais will stay longer simply for the NOVELTY UNTIL IT WEARS OFF and we should expect it. SO STOP WHINING ( especially those who have seen this series since season one. It has happened many times before and it'll happen again )

For the girls, the following 3 are really good and if you really make a comparison of SINGING + PERFORMING Talents, Kate Mcphee, Mandissa and Paris Bennet are leagues above the rest.

For the rest of the ladies, My bottom three ( from top to bottom would have been )...

LISA TUCKER
MELISSA McGHEE
KELLIE PICKLER

I think its important to ask why and think for yourself as opposed to just listening to the judges.

LISA - she picks songs that have a much higher range than she is able to handle. She falls just a tad short of hitting the notes that are high. she has a nice lower register, but struggles big time ( there's Dick Cheney's influence right there) with the upper register. if she learned to pick songs that work within her range, she would do much better. The judges are giving her too much credit. Also, she has the penchant and affinity for slow ballads. She tried to crank it up last night but it only seemed to highlight her limitations. Besides, she's the youngest girl in this competition ( as young as Jasmine Trias was when she started ). She needs a lot of seasoning but she'll go far.

Comparing her to the other precocious 16 year old from season 3 --- Diana Degarmo, Lisa loses ( BTW, Diana is now a celebrated star on Broadway in the hit -- HAIRSPRAY. In fact, her name alone is drawing crowds ).

Melissa - she forgot the words in to Stevie's song. Stevie caught it, so did I. Not in just one but 3 SECTIONS !!

I'm positive because I can sing the song in my shower. This is of course quite frustrating because the judges gave her way too much praise on this.

The performance really was a disappointment and I was rooting for her to do well ! she has a nice, unique raspy voice that would have distinguished her. Like Ayla, she's a hard worker but really, between Ayla and herself, Ayla should have been here instead of her ( just as Gedeon should have been here instead of Kevin. Now that's a thought --- Gedeon would absolutely have done justice to PART TIME LOVER ).

Melissa is a tragic case of nerves getting the better of talent. The evil Simon, learning his lesson like a cunning Abu Al Zarqawi ( who knows he can't win militarily, therefore, he strikes at the WILL of the American Public and a pliant media ), gave her praises instead of telling her to take a ticket home and IT WORKED. Simon knows how to counter the stick it to him campaign.

KELLIE - One word to describe her in Stevie Wonder night --- monotomous. It was neither here, there nor anywhere ( now that's an idea for a song -- are you listening, Paul ?). There was no texture or dynamics to this performance. She is totally getting by on her country bumpkin personality. You can get by on beauty pageant charm for a while, but ultimately this is a singing competition and YOU HAVE TO BE VOCALLY STRONG TO SURVIVE.

But folks, how can you not help but think that she's taking us for a ride ? Already you can see something not kosher about her compared to say --- BUCKY.

Notice this --- ONLY SHE AND ELLIOTT actually cried tears of joy when they met the legendary Stevie Wonder. Elliott is understandable as he patterns his style after Wonder himself. But Kellie ??? She claims never to have heard of him in her intro and here she is WEEPING and OVERWHELMED when she meets him !!! What fools we are to believe this soap opera !

Therefore, we aren't surprised to learn that poor un-pimped Melissa is eliminated. But she's a plucky one who fought hard to stay in it.  Her farewell video ended with a clip of her singing "Lately" (not forgetting the words) and Simon telling her afterwards that it was her best performance ever.  Ahhh...so there you go. Well played REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY Simon! Bravo.

HERE IS THE CONCLUSION TO THE MATTER :

Poor Melissa was barely given 30 seconds to sing.  And since she finished 12th, she's still signed to the draconian Top 12 contract, but won't be included on the summer Ai tour--where the kids finally get to make some real money for their efforts.  Bummer. LIFE's NOT FAIR.

Some thoughts:  The Ford commercials featuring the contestants are usually some good cheesy fun. But is anyone buying a FORD nowadays ? All I see around my neighborhood are Japanese, Korean and German cars.

OK FOLKS, HERE IS ANOTHER THING FOR ME PERSONALLY TO WHINE ABOUT.

I think I lost my attention half-way through Stevie Wonder's guest performance.

Not to dish the legend himself, but Stevie's early stuff were absolute classics, but he hasn't produced any interesting music for the past 5 years.

This particular tune was pretty much the same old same old. There used to be a time when artists really produced GREAT MUSIC. That was long ago when I was still in high school and college. Now, we have untalented kids who dare call themselves artists and winning OSCAR FOR BEST SONGS for such banal songs as "IT's HARD TO BE A PIMP" ( or something of that nature). Can you imagine singing that in karaoke ??

Barry Manilow has all but quit writing Middle of the Road hits because young ones don't appreciate them any longer, prefering to ( like Chicken Little himself ) groove to an untalented thug like Kanye West or P. Diddy who celebrate decadence instead of goodness. So what does Barry do to get to be number one on the billboard ?? HO HO HO, he makes an album that CELEBRATES THE SONGS OF THE 1950's !!!

It goes to Number 1 without much radio airplay !!! Let's celebrate the power of the internet and alternative media.
My Hollywood friends tell me that Barry is coming back to AI next week when the theme is -- the GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK ( be prepared for a surprise appearance of someone with a raspy voice too <--- no more spoilers ).

bookmarked for future use. Didn't realize this thread existed.

Just for the record - can't stand Kevin or Kellie. I must mute the tv when they sing.

To anyone of you who are fans of Taylor Hicks out there.

Just wanted to share a rare interview with everyone….

Here is an interview with SEAN HICKS, Taylor’s Younger brother who is himself a jazz musician but unlike Taylor prefers to be practical and is at George Tech studying to become an engineer. It also shows Taylor’s mom and dad and his bandmates and friends who are all together watching his performances every Tuesday :

This article ( and almost everyone ) says NO. Anyone who even
suggests it should be tarred and feathered.

Grey-haired Idol not the norm

Fri, March 17, 2006

By JUDY MONCHUK, CP

CALGARY -- In an entertainment universe where Botox rules and youth
is the ultimate goal, the mere suggestion of a grey-haired American
Idol seems like a joke.

But Taylor Hicks, the effusive, harmonica-playing blues singer from
Alabama, who looks older than his 29 years, has become an unlikely
focus on the singing contest.

Even tweens, the show's target audience, applaud his individuality
and unwillingness to revamp his image -- even if the soulful singer
isn't their choice among the top 12 finalists.

"It's kind of brave of him," says Oliver, a Grade 7 pupil at the
Calgary girls school, where all grades study and discuss the
importance of being comfortable in their own skin.

"It's risky being out there with a different sort of beauty."

Oliver and classmates were horrified by a suggestion from Idol host
Ryan Seacrest that Hicks, who started going grey at 15, is being
pressured by the show's hairstylist to change his hair colour.

"He'd be giving in. It would be like he thought he wasn't good
enough," said Jennifer, another pupil.

Hicks has become a hot topic online thanks to his unusual image,
which is decidedly different from that of the average pop star.
After all, two of the show's most successful winners -- Carrie
Underwood and Kelly Clarkson -- have cover-girl looks to go along
with beautiful voices.

A series of Hicks fansites have popped up on the Internet, including
www.greycharles.com -- a nod to both his hair and his Ray Charles-
influenced sound. Many include debates on whether he should cover
the grey, which even Hicks says has become his "beacon" and set him
apart from the other finalists.

In fact, "grey-haired idol" was Yahoo!'s top-searched buzz item
after one of the Idol shows this month.

Hairstylist Patrick Trudeau, who clips locks at the Ginger Group,
Calgary's trendiest salon, says Hicks would be crazy to cave in to
pressure for a makeover.

"I love the fact that he's chosen to be natural," says Trudeau, who
began going grey himself at 16. "A lot of people would say he's
chosen to be plain, but in today's culture, with everybody colouring
their hair, for him to choose to be natural makes him more of an
individual."

It's doubtful his infectious smile or jerky dance moves will spawn a
trend of young Hicksters opting against covering up the first
indications of a salt-and-pepper look.

But his refusal to change has made Hicks easier to identify and
that's a good thing in a competition, says Arlene Oak, who teaches
the connection between culture and appearance in the University of
Alberta's human ecology department.

"It's a way in which he stands out and that's positive in this
environment," said Oak. "He's drawing attention to himself by being
himself."

Still, no one believes a female contestant would have made it this
far with grey hair.

"They'd get the image of a grandma," said Oliver.

It's been a little quiet here for over 24 hours, so let's make a little noise...

Some reports :

American Idol continues to dominate the airwaves. Tuesday's show averaged 32.5 million viewers and a 13.5 rating/32 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. "Idol" started strongly, with 28.7 million viewers, but grew to 35.5 million viewers by 9:30 PM. On Wednesday, the show averaged 27.8 million viewers and an 11.4 rating/28 share in the adults 18-49 demographic.

Which on-going weekly show in the past 10 years has this kind of ratings and surpasses it ? <--- That's a trivia question ( and no, I don't know the answer ).

Now for my suggestions as to which song fits which singer for the 1950's night ( the guest interactor will of course be Barry Manilow, who recently had a number 1 album featuring songs from the 1950's ).

The great thing about this theme is this --- you have literary thousands of great songs to choose from for over a decade and you are not limited to one composer's catalog. This night was meant to highlight your versatility and yet, allow you the freedom to sing within your comfort zone.

BASICALLY, any DECADE BASED (e.g., 50's, 60's,70's ) theme is great for the singers.

So, what should each singer pick for 50's night ?

IMAGINE YOURSELF HIRED TO BE THEIR VOCAL ADVISER. WHAT WOULD YOU ADVISE THEM TO SING TO ENDEAR THEM TO 35 MILLION WATCHERS SO AS TO GUARANTEE THAT THEY'LL STAY ON ??

Since I don't have a spoiler (yet), here are my suggestions ( let's see how good my ESP is. NOTE: I usually got a few of them correct in the past seasons )...

ACE YOUNG -

If Ace wants to show off his range instead of it's limits ( without resorting to falsetto), he should try "CRY" by Johnny Ray.

If he's still insecure about his range ( and I suspect it is limited because Mario Vasquez kicked major ass with Stevie Wonder's DO-I-DO and Ace DID NOT ), he should limit it to a song that will do justice to his woman-killing personality --- CRYING IN THE RAIN by Everly Brothers would probably help.

KEVIN COVAIS

His purpose is to keep the granny vote AND to add the teen vote and ( he already has the Vote For Worst recommentdation ). CHOOSE A PAUL ANKA SONG ----> PUT YOUR HEAD ON MY SHOULDER or PUPPY LOVE ( the later will cement his AWWW factor and keep him for a few more weeks before the inevitable axe falls ).

Kellie Pickler.

Baby, this night was made for you. Patti Page made a song that was a big hit in the 1950's and I couldn't even think of a song that fits your personality and naivete and background as this one. SING --- TENNESSEE WALTZ. If you do justice to this, you'd make every woman who has ever been cheated on cry and make them forget your disastrous Stevie Wonder night.

Katharine Mcphee

This theme is perfect for Katharine. She has a big band quality to her voice that fits this theme to a "T". In fact, I dare say she'd make women like Connie Francis and Rosemary Clooney proud if she chose their songs.

2 possibilities :

“Where the Boys Are” Connie Francis- Katharine really has a Connie Francis voice, soaring, smooth and clear. Listen to teacher dear --- CHOOSE THIS SONG and you'll be a star.

Now, if you want to try a fun side and challenge your performance skills a little to get out of the -- she's just too stiff and pregnant looking mould -- try Rosemary Clooney's MAMBO ITALIANO. You're raven haired, look spohisticated and in fact, could pass off as Italian marble statue. C'mon girl, challenge yourself a bit and make yourself unforgettable ( and I don't mean singing this song either ).

MANDISA

Mandisa's real main weakness is her low register. When she starts low, things sound a little uneven. Therefore, we need something that could give her the oooomph factor.

ORANGE COLORED SKY by Nat 'King' Cole. Now this song will highlight her uplifting, fun and exuberant side. The final big band backup boom in the end can (if done right) potentially bring the house down.

TAYLOR HICKS

There are plenty of great songs for Taylor in this genre. His throwback style fits into at least 50 years in the past.

SOME POSSIBILITIES :

1)SWANEE RIVER ROCK ( Ray Charles ). You already gave us a teaser in your pre-Hollywood audition tht made a believer of Randy and Paula, now give us the full version ( and yes, let your inner Ray go in this song ).

2) Any Two Chuck Berry songs --- Johnny B. Goode or Roll Over Beethoven ( you could wail on this one, and you'd brign the house down if they allow you to play the harmonica). That'll keep them rolling. I' sure that'll keep you for another week, but please, slow down next week.

3) "Train Kept a Rollin’”-Johnny Burnette- If you stay in total Taylor land, he’ll pick this, which Aerosmith later covered.

Eliott Yamin

I really like to see him work the stage like Taylor does but I'm not sure if you won't feel awkward doing that. So, lets get back to basics this week and highlight your smooth, soothing, pleasant vocals.

Let's see you try -“Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” by The Platters. Now, the high, soaring ending of this song will show us if you have the vocal chops of say, Clay Aiken. I'd like to see how you can sustain the final high note for 6 seconds without choking....

That'll tell us if Simon's statement that you are "potentially" the best singer in this competition, correct.

You're always about potential, you admitted, NOW GO AND REACH FOR IT, REALIZE IT NOW, OR NEVER !!

Paris Bennet

I fell in love with Paris during the pre-audition when she, at 17, showed us she could do Billie Holiday and highlighted the fact that this young lady could sing the blues. Her "CAN'T FIGHT THE MOONLIGHT" in the Hollywood audition was outstanding. There really is nothing that Paris cannot sing.

But then I fell out of love for her when she started to choose bland songs in the first two weeks. My faith in her returned when she did Stevie Wonder Proud.

1950's WILL BE A CAKE WALK FOR PARIS I predict inspite of her age. Why ? She's got the spirit of her grandmother, the great Ann Nesby in her.

One song that really stuck to me was -“Fever” by Peggy Lee-She already sang this IMPRESSIVELY in the Hollywood auditions, she’d be smart to reprise it and show us the full version.

BUCKY COVINGTON.

There are a lot of great southern music he can choose from in the 1950's albeit, most were NOT delivered with the rocky growl he's used to doing.

Possibilities :

WALK THE LINE by Johnny Cash ( he'd endear himself to Johnny's millions of fans here and abroad if he deos justice to this ).

HEARTBREAK HOTEL by Elvis --- Hmmm... can Buck do Elvis ? remains to be seen.

YOUR CHEATING HEART by Hank Williams ( now this, I'd like to see ).

Chris Daughtry.

Alternative Rock meets the 50's ? Now this is a challenge.

POSSIBILITIES :
1) “Smoke Stack Lightenin’” by: Howlin’ Wolf- It can really show off Chris’s vocal growl ( but can he sing something without screaming for once ?).

2) -“Train Kept a Rollin’”- Johnny Burnette- This song could fit Taylor as well. However, if Chris wants to stay within his comfort zone ( and he's done nothing but that since the beginning ), this classic will keep him rocking till the next round.

LISA TUCKER

Another singer for whom this genre is perfect for. Lisa might be 16 but she has not shown us that Jimi Hendrix style of singing she claims she's a fan of. Most of her songs are too Disneyesque, perfect for someone like --- DORIS DAY for instance.

Hence, here are some perfect songs for her :

1) “Maybe” by The Chantels- Since Lisa is a Whitney Houston wannabe, I can't think of any singer to emulate than the Whitney's of the 1950's. This would be great for her.

2) “I Will Follow Him” by Little Peggy March- This was covered in of all movies -- SISTER ACT. Lisa is in very grave danger of being the next to go but I want to keep her instead of the less deserving Kevin. The advantage of this song is -- IT ISN't ANNOYING, yet RECOGNIZABLE.

3) Now if Lisa wants to be lovable ( and her cute cover girl smile shows that she is), she has to make the Grannies vote for her and forget Kevin. I have the song for her --- -“Guy is a Guy” by Doris Day ( and Lisa has that Doris Day vibe ).

Comments/Critiques as to why these songs are good/bad/fitting/not fitting welcome.
