In one of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels, I remember Sergey Golovko (I think) telling Jack Ryan that "girl children are God's curse on men for being men".
Does anybody remember which book had that quote? Bonus question: What page?
Thanks!!
Mark
My favorite Russian proverb:
Don't piss in your soup unless you have other plans for dinner.
Or is that a Polish proverb...?
Help...my tagline!!!
Sounds like something my father-in-law (German) would say.
It does sound like something Banacek would have said.
![]() I don't remember the line, however, I'd go with Cardinal of the Kremlin when Ryan travels to Moscow and first meets Sergei. Saying something like that is more of a face to face type of dialogue rather than something you would here over a secure phone line. Also, Ryan's daughter would have been just about appearing at this time.
Of of this is pure speculation mind you. BTW, Cinemax is showing The Hunt for Red October at this moment. |
Something I've always wondered: glasnost, it was always said by the MSM, meant "openness." Any Russian dictionary I've ever seen has given the definition as "publicity." Was this disinformation by Gorby and the MSM?
I think that is "The Bear and The Dragon" because I believe that Sally, Jack's Daughter, is dating some kid named "Kenny"....
I understand his newest novel comes out end of May... but I'm not sure.
“Or is that a Polish proverb...?”
Banacek?
"For years, Jack Ryan, Jr. and his colleagues at the Campus have waged an unofficial and highly effective campaign against the terrorists who threaten western civilization. The most dangerous of these is the Emir. This sadistic killer has masterminded the most vicious attacks on the west and has eluded capture by the worlds law enforcement agencies. Now the Campus is on his trail. Joined by their latest recruits, John Clark and Ding Chavez, Jack Ryan, Jr. and his cousins, Dominick and Brian Caruso, are determined to catch the Emir and they will bring him in . . . dead or alive."
Speaking to Sergey Golovko in The Bear and the Dragon:
“Thank you, Mr. President. I will pass that along. So, your family, it is well?” You couldn’t have this sort of meeting without irrelevant pleasantries.
“My oldest, Sally, is dating. That’s hard on Daddy,” Ryan admitted.
“Yes.” Golovko allowed himself a smile. “You live in fear that she will come upon such a boy as you were, yes?”
“Well, the Secret Service helps keep the little bastards under control.”
“There is much to be said for men with guns, yes,” the Russian agreed with some amusement, to lighten the moment.
“Yeah, but I think daughters are God’s punishment on us for being men.” That observation earned Ryan a laugh.
“Just so, Ivan Emmetovich, just so.” And Sergey paused again.
Oh my God, you thread-dug Kenny!!!
