Apple IS Apple, Dell is distributor for IBM.

Let me know when Apple surpasses IBM.

A good indication that Dell's approach (low cost, high volume, sacrificing margins to grab more and more market share) is not the only way to sell computers.

In determining stock price, market share is only an indirect factor. The market cap is basically the market's assessment of the total present value of all future dividends. And dividends don't come from market share, they come from profits. Apple's profits come from maintaining margins that are abnormally high for that industry. Call it marketing if you want (and marketing is part of it) but it's worked pretty well so far. And if it could easily be copied, more companies would be doing it.
