Word For The Day, Thursday, January 12, 2006 - dubiety
dictionaries ad nauseum | January 12, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 01/12/2006 5:00:50 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

dubiety \doo-BY-uh-tee; dyoo-\, noun
1. The condition or quality of being doubtful or skeptical.
2. A matter of doubt.

Example sentences:
Kennedy and O'Connor may think that Title 3 has been violated, but O'Connor and the chief justice are not convinced that the Supreme Court was meant to litigate challenges under that federal statute, and their dubiety here is shared by Justices Scalia and Souter.
--Hadley Arkes, "A Morning at the Court," National Review, December 2, 2000

I want every inconsistency, every dubiety, every ambiguity left in.
--David Maclean, quoted in David Hencke, "Tories plot hunt bill dirty tricks," The Guardian, January 17, 2001

Etymology: Dubiety is from Late Latin dubietas, from Latin dubius, "doubtful, uncertain."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Being able to put his (college-years) drinking problems behind him, Dubya far exceeds the moral strength and courage of the oft-drunken T. Kennedy in dubriety!

Not closed........just delayed...........

It's really spooky out there - I can no longer see the road from where I'm sitting, let alone the house across the road. I sure as heck would not want to be driving on these narrow, windy, 2-lane roads in this....let alone be drivig a school bus.

There can be no dubiety, the Dems are lower than pondscum. However, xshub reminded me that Clarence Thomas did not sit and take it, when dished out lo those 14 years ago, but rather he called them on the HIGH TECH LYNCHING that they conducted on him, in 1991. You could have heard a pin drop in those Senate chambers that on that rare Saturday session, the last day of his hearings. of course chuck the schmuck and the Turbin were not in those chambers at that point, so who knows that reaction something like that would prompt with this group.

Apparently there is dubiety in the Dumbdem controlled Maryland legislature regarding enough votes to overturn governor Ehrlich's veto of the first in the nation law to force companies (read ONLY WalMart) to provide health insurance foro employees.

Wal-Mart bill in Md. Assembly too close to call.
