Word For The Day, Thursday, January 12, 2006 - dubiety
dictionaries ad nauseum | January 12, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 01/12/2006 5:00:50 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

dubiety \doo-BY-uh-tee; dyoo-\, noun
1. The condition or quality of being doubtful or skeptical.
2. A matter of doubt.

Example sentences:
Kennedy and O'Connor may think that Title 3 has been violated, but O'Connor and the chief justice are not convinced that the Supreme Court was meant to litigate challenges under that federal statute, and their dubiety here is shared by Justices Scalia and Souter.
--Hadley Arkes, "A Morning at the Court," National Review, December 2, 2000

I want every inconsistency, every dubiety, every ambiguity left in.
--David Maclean, quoted in David Hencke, "Tories plot hunt bill dirty tricks," The Guardian, January 17, 2001

Etymology: Dubiety is from Late Latin dubietas, from Latin dubius, "doubtful, uncertain."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

If there was any dubiety of the dems' special purpose, there was no doubt left yesterday.

Leaky reeks of dubiety,
Scotch is the swimmer's deity,
On Alito they flail,
For that holy grail,
That will plug turban's piehole, a sight to see!

Senator Coburn, please pick up the white phone. LOL.

Seriesly, Trubin the dubious purveyor of dubiety should be deported to Dubai.

Morning!

There is certainly no dubiety
Of the 'rat party's intentions
Of trying to Bork Alito-after all
It's one of their biggest inventions

For them to allow fat Teddy
To huff and puff and lie
Was as ill-advised as the rudeness
That made Mrs. Alito cry

The total lack of civility
Is enough to raise your hackles-
Their party emblem should be changed
From donkeys into jackals

I'm off to work-back later...
