Word For The Day, Thursday, January 12, 2006 - dubiety
dictionaries ad nauseum | January 12, 2006 | secret garden

Posted on 01/12/2006 5:00:50 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

dubiety \doo-BY-uh-tee; dyoo-\, noun
1. The condition or quality of being doubtful or skeptical.
2. A matter of doubt.

Example sentences:
Kennedy and O'Connor may think that Title 3 has been violated, but O'Connor and the chief justice are not convinced that the Supreme Court was meant to litigate challenges under that federal statute, and their dubiety here is shared by Justices Scalia and Souter.
--Hadley Arkes, "A Morning at the Court," National Review, December 2, 2000

I want every inconsistency, every dubiety, every ambiguity left in.
--David Maclean, quoted in David Hencke, "Tories plot hunt bill dirty tricks," The Guardian, January 17, 2001

Etymology: Dubiety is from Late Latin dubietas, from Latin dubius, "doubtful, uncertain."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I'm so happy for you. A mild winter.

We're supposed to get a huge breeze tomorrow to blow out all of this particulated air. God willing and the creek don't rise, it will happen!

We're only about eight degrees warmer than you, xs. Great for you, too! Gotta get those gardners in shape. LOL!

Cook, Cyber got a pastrami sandwich with his favorite dill pickles. Tonight he's getting scallops (barbecued inside) with red and green peppers (which I've already had in the oven at 450 degrees so they brown and in a brown bag so they're easier to peel) and onions and rice.

We finally took down the Christmas tree. It's hard for both of us. Boo-hoo. Now we're just down to the garland and some other treasures like the five-foot Santa Claus that sings and dances. We're like two little kids when it comes to Christmas.

She only gets it because she worked for this fair-minded intelligent judge. That's IMHO.

Our winters don't get real bad until late January, then February and March are brutal.

We're all air-conditioned in the summer. In fact, the grade schools and high schools start their first semester of the year in August, not September as other schools do.

The first driving tip Cyber gave me when I moved here was this: A person in the heat of the summer with his windows rolled down ALWAYS has the right of way. Reason? They are so hot, that road rage can be a problem. Best to let them get some wind on their faces, albeit hot wind. It's not on the books as a law, but just common sense.

Those plugs are not cheap either. LOL! But they keep falling out. He needs to borrow xs's friend Tacredo (I know I spelled that incorrectly) gerbils for the top of his head.

Our tree came down last night. I ran out to the store to get a bigger ornament box and counted no less then five trees still up and lit as I drove through my little village. The neighbors out back are Russian Orthodox so are still decorated as well. MMmmmmm, it seems to be a growing thrend.

I saw it. The horse with the really hairy tail and the enormous eyes. I'm sorry about not using the correct name, but that man has a thing about hair!!!

Not with my younger sis. Her tree came down on December 27. She wondered what the heck I was doing with it still up.

Putting up the decorations are fun. Taking them down kind of makes you sad.

If I worked out of the home I would have it down before I went back to work. But I prefer doing it myself and letting the hubby off the hook. He has to return the tree to the attic though. I would have done it Jan 2nd, but I have been sick.
