CINCINNATI (AP) -- A dead woman dressed in white was positioned in a chair in front of a television set for 2 1/2 years because she told her caregiver that she didn't want to be buried and planned to return, the coroner said.
"Don't show my body when I'm dead," Hamilton County Coroner Dr. O'dell Owens said Monday in describing Johannas Pope's wishes. "Don't bury me. I'm coming back."
Pope, 61, died Aug. 29, 2003. Her caretaker and friend, whose name has not been released, left the woman upstairs in the home with the television and air conditioning on while the body slowly decayed and mummified, authorities said.
Some family members continued to live downstairs in the house since her death.
Police went to the house last Wednesday after a relative who hadn't seen Pope in 2 1/2 years called them. They found a staircase behind a door blocked by a basket and climbed to the second floor where they found the body.
"Standing outside, one could smell death," Owens said

I've been wondering what Sally Jesse Raphael has been doing since she left the air.
"South Park" -- that the show most people wouldn't be caught dead watching.
. . .off your meds. . or what?
"it may not have an 'odor' but think you can smell death. . .nonetheless. . ."
I agree. I wonder if you can really smell fear??
Not "would have" but actually voted for him 4 times.
For sure dogs can. . .it is said that when fearful. . .we (and the rest of the aniimal kingdom, no doubt for the most part). . . emit certain . . .'whatevers'. ..phenomes or somesuch (help!) and so there is in fact a 'scent' to fear. . .
Now, do WE smell it. ..probably...but perhaps on a less concious level. . .unless one has a really good nose. (I know I have smelled 'fear' on my dog. . .)
AS to smelling death. . .the old question of the 'tree falling in the forest' comes to mind. . .and in this case, a tree falling in a 'cold winter forest'. . .or just a body sitting in a frigid room. . .in front of a warm tv. . .
. . .I just meant. ..like. ..maybe they turned off the tv after the eleven o'clock news and then on again for Katie Cupchuck in the morning. . .because hard to imagine a TV having that much time without 'something' burning out. . .
/ /. . .but. . .could be a tv lasts longer; if you are NOT fooling around with the remote and changing channels and doing the on. . .off thing. ;^)
Material here for a great commercial. Was it a. .. 'Sony' or an old 'Motorola. . .Panasonic?
That said. ..wondering if she even had cable to watch or did they keep her stuck on NBC?
Like...did they take care of Johanna. ..or just leave her, for dead. . .
One Particular Harbour is back??
With my luck, the channel would be stuck on "Lifetime" with me unable to operate the remote.
This greatly affects the public's trust in the Nielsen's TV ratings.

She must have been very Grateful...
Oxygen or Bravo.
I believe pre- mid-1980s that most TVs used a knob, which twisted 'ON' would leave it in that state after a power interruption. I would think an already-old TV would burn out in that time, but maybe the sound would still work.
The A/C's thermostat may have reduced strain on the unit, but the fan would still be going. I think it would be OK in winter, and it even may have cooled the room just enough to preserve her gorgeous corpse for awhile.

This one will surely turn up on "CSI."

CSI? Law and Order?
I predict: THE WEALTHY, STRAIGHT WHITE GUY DID IT!
On the contrary. Now that her set has been turned off, I bet their ratings take a ten percent drop.
My first thought on reading this was the body upstairs in "Texas Chainsaw Massacre".. ( the original, not the remake.. never saw the remake..)
Your profile page looks fine ;)
I think I felt warm bile in my throat. This is a sick family. I guess the chair captured all the juices that oozed from her body. Guess they'll be throwing out grandma's barcalounger!
BTW, you can smell death. The smell of decomposing human (particularly two year old remains) is nasty. Reminds me of that scene in LA Confidential when the two cops are discovered under the crazy old lady's front porch. She had towels under her door to keep the smell at bay.
