Vince Young announced Sunday that he is skipping his senior season as quarterback for the national champion Texas Longhorns and will enter the NFL draft.
"I've decided to enter the draft this year and go to the NFL," Young said in a news conference on the University of Texas campus. "I know that everybody is behind me, and I thank God for that. I won't let ya'll down."
Young said he made the decision after meeting with his pastor and family. He vowed to complete the requirements for his college degree.
"I want to thank God for this opportunity to be in the position I'm in today," Young said. "Hard work has paid off, a whole lot."
Young thanked UT coaches, staff members and teammates, as well as his mother, Felicia, whom he called "my superwoman."
Four days after leading Texas to its first college football national title since 1970, Young became the first Longhorn with eligibility remaining to leave early for the NFL in Mack Brown's eight-year tenure as coach of the Longhorns.
"I'll always be a Longhorn," Young said.

Jealously?
Hardly. Please don't tell me that you are one of those transplants into Austin who did not even attend that obnoxious bastion of liberal politics (and vomit-like school colors) and now considers yourself one of "them."
No, I'm not jealous of "ut."
It's hard to be jealous of something I find disgusting.
Relax, kid. I'm also disgusted by Duke and Wisconsin.
That's your original comment. Tell me, is that how you "ut" fans talk to everyone? Seriously. That's quite pathetic if your level of education only enables you to communicate at that level.
So indicative of the types of people who support "ut."
Now that's a touch choice! Let's see, another year in school, rooming with some other dude, having to get on a bus and ride for 10 hours at a stretch...
OR...Sign a multi-year $40 million contract and never have to worry about doing real work ever again.
Let me think on that and get back to you!
Young will either go to the New Orleans Saints #2 pick or the Tennessee Titans #3 pick.
HUH? What similarities do you see between Young and any of those players listed?
Oh please .....this kid has it made if he goes straight to the NFL. At the very least he gets a GUARANTEED signing bonus in the millions.
IF he goes back to college for a 'chance to defend his National Championship title' all he gets is a chance. UT may have a repeat and win again, but on the other hand they may fizzle. Vince may get injured, or he may have a whole season with nardy a cold let alone a sports injury. He may achieve even greater accomplishments than he did, or he may lose his mojo and lustre.
Anything could happen if he decides to stay in college. There are a couple of people who could have been drafted but decided to stay behind to their detriment. The most recent example(that had a bust) was Jason White, who had an extremely good year in 2003 (including winning the Heisman, with 40 touchdown passes with only 10 interceptions ....as well as the Associated Press Player of the Year, consensus All-American, consensus Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, the Davey O'Brien Award and the Jim Thorpe Courage Award). All of those were in 2003.
However he managed to go back to OU for a 'second' final year, and what happened? In his bid to be the second person to EVER win a second Heisman (after that Archie something dude), White did his best. He was even in the running for a Heisman (although he lost to USC's Leinart ...actually I believe White came third not even second). Moreover in the Orange Bowl USC THRASHED OU .....whipped them good ....and White looked like a chump.
Had Jason gone into the draft after his Heisman (after the 2003 season) he would have been drafted at a very good spot (and even if he had fizzled, as he did, he would still have gotten nice compensation for his time), but he waited for another year (and all he got for his efforts was becoming the all-record holder in touchdowns and passes at Oklahoma University. An amazing accomplishment, but I think he aimed at having more than just that). His professional fate was getting signed by the Titans as a free agent, and White did not even finish training camp before retiring from the NFL.
Vince Young is sitting on cloud 9 right now. The fact still remains that he will probably be one of the top 3 drafts this season (I still think Bush will get first), and he will receive a GUARANTEED signing bonus in the millions. True, he could fizzle out, but at least he would fizzle out with something (and I personally do not think he will ....abd comparing Vince Young with a crazy hothead like Ryan Leaf as you did is a HUGE stretch. Leaf was a silly crazy).
Anyways, Young has a gilded deal in front of him if he goes to the NFL. If he stays in college all he has is a 'maybe' in terms of winning another championship, and another 'maybe' that he will still be hot after 2006. He'd be a fool to not get into the draft this year, and fortunately he appears not to be one.
O-line can be fixed in free agency the bears did that this year. Presonally I think its better to get vets at that position anyhow. Hire Tice as a line coach and hire a defensive head coach and keep the same offensive coordinator you had last year. let the head coach choose the defensive coordinator.
Yep ....I am very curious as to what similarities that poster sees between someone like Vince Young and a crazy kookpot like Ryan Leaf (apart from that they are both male Homo Sapiens, both went to college, both played ball, etc). Ryan Leaf was a complete nutjob .....to the extreme. Vince Young is nothing like Leaf.
or Cade McNown 6'1" 210#, Vince Young 6'5" 230# and fast.
It seems they've got so many problems on the line that can't just be addressed in free agency. Even ignoring that, they have so many needs that they shouldn't be worrying about areas they already have covered.
There are so many ways they can go with this pick. They can hardly mess up no matter what they do. My guess is that we won't know for sure what they'll do until the new coach is in place. As a Cowboys and Longhorns fan, I can only hope that he slips to 18, though.
Young should have gotten the Hiesman Trophy but I believe Bush and Leinert will do better as pros.
By taking a leap into NFL now, and make that million plus bucks signng bonus and more with playing time for a season would take care of that. He can always go back to college and get that degree.
Emmitt Smith did that and got his degree (BTW, it was in Business Administration and Finance if I'm not mistaken). He probably still has his first dollar he ever earned! He is pretty tight with his money! LOL
Also look for LenDale White of USC to go into the draft.
He won't look better than this year or the last game and will go for the pros I figure.
Or Young could play another year at Texas, actually win the Heisman trophy, prove himself a true leader and lead his team another National Championship and sign for 60 million next year.
If life is all about money- Young should be smart enough to get as much as he can.
Quick- name the last quarterback to leave school early, be successful, and get $40 mil?? Ben Roethlisberger? Yep- Ben played for the league minimum his first year. His signing bonus did not kick in until a year later.
Eli Manning, had a great senior year in college- his signing bonus- $20 mil- about a 1/3 of that was paid up front.
Quarterbacks that graduate make more money today in the NFL than do quarterbacks who left school early.
"Please don't tell me that you are one of those transplants into Austin who did not even attend that obnoxious bastion of liberal politics (and vomit-like school colors) and now considers yourself one of "them.""
No, it's where I got my PhD
"That's quite pathetic if your level of education only enables you to communicate at that level."
Already answered that question. That's just how I have to bring myself down to the level of someone who feels the need to blurt "ut" and explain it, like a whiny little child.
