2.i have tried most of the top 50 distros at distrowatch and hated most of them. i came close to keeping desktopBSD but it pissed me off too. in the end most distros just don't work after you install them. they either come broken or just plain lack the programs for the things i need installed.
then came pclinuxos OMG!!!!!! wow!!! it really works.
samba hooked up to my local MS network, amarok played my mp3s and built a database of all my music across my whole network and pulls it off on a 600mhz computer streaming eveything. kick butt!! i surfed all my normal sites and they all showed up perfect. i never felt these two things were too much to ask for but this is the first distro that pulled then both off straight from the install. great job guys!
it's a keeper!
two problems though:
synaptic software manager found nothing that needed updating after install.
isn't that kinda odd???
how do i get xscreensaver working? I really want the matrix screensaver and have install that package with the package manager. i can't find it on the screen saver setup in KDE and really don't have no idea what to do next.

See, that's the kind of trouble that turns people off.
I've tried Knoppix. It is supposed to save my preferences to the hard drive but of course it doesn't. I have to go through my preferences, urls, etc each time I start it.
I might be able to get used to it if I didn't have to go through all that each time I want to use it.
Grrrrr
did you download from here? none appear over 700megs.

which one do you need? easy
this is the basic disc you need.
http://pclinuxos.ethz.ch/mirror/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/pclinuxos-p92.iso
it "should" work with any computer.
if you have an ATI video card grab this one.
http://pclinuxos.ethz.ch/mirror/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/pclinuxos-p92-ati8500up.iso
the first should work but your video card will only work
in default VGA probably.
this one for old nvidia cards
http://pclinuxos.ethz.ch/mirror/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/pclinuxos-p92-nvidia7174.iso
this one for new nvidia cards
http://pclinuxos.ethz.ch/mirror/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/pclinuxos-p92-nvidia7676.iso
then you have to burn it as an ISO image to disc.
do you know how to do that?
remember, baby steps.
linux WILL piss you off when you start the crossover.
But tomorrow I'll give it a try again. I really want to get away from Microsoft.
that is kinda weird how they did that. remember though this distro is at .92 that means beta release.
i'm loading genieOS .5 on my test box right now. wish me luck.(smiles)
after you load 30 or so distros you get really good at it.LOL
if you do keep trying new linux things out keep in touch, i'm on the front lines with you.
also give desktopBSD and PC-BSD a try.
alot more stable and even a bigger headache to figure out what the heck they are talking about.
Gotta jump in here.
I have been using Windows, still use it, but I’m sick of dealing with the licensing. I buy used Ebay laptops, and some come without OS’s.
I read about Ubuntu and thought that’s where I’d end up, but after loading it, I didn’t have the DVD player?!? and some other things not right. Meanwhile, my son’s computer was constantly crashing regardless what OS or hardware changes we made UNTIL we put PCLinuxOS all upon. It’s run solidly ever since......
So I put it on my own Windows xp pro machine as a dual boot. Simple, even to this Linux newbie. I’m using it right now in fact. I have all my Firefox bookmarks syncronized, so they’re all there. It feels like I’m still on XP. It found my internet wireless card, thumbdrives, everything. It supports flash websites, and everything else I’ve tried. OH, I haven’t tried downloading a PDF file.
The ONLY thing I have found that I don’t like is a stupid sniggling detail. I like to use the keyboard as much as possible and the backspace will revert to the previous page in the browser in xp. I haven’t found where to make it do that in PCLOS.
Also, something I’ve discovered about my Compaq Evo. The touchpad doesn’t have those cool side-slide strips for scrolling up and down the page. Not under XP anyway. With PCLOS it WORKS! If I keep my finger on the edge of the scroll pad it moves the page, not the mouse. It’s like a free hardware upgrade.
Wow, I mis read the date on this thread! This is from last year. I installed PClinuxOS 2007.
