When honesty pays (an update about my stolen car)
me

Posted on 01/07/2006 8:09:26 PM PST by cyborg

Last year my car was stolen from my driveway. It was stolen by a little brat fifteen year old and his buddies. His mom was really nasty to me and didn't want to give me three hundred dollars to fix my car. Thanks to a two page letter I wrote expressing my open, honest opinion about the future of this young man's life, I was awarded $1100 by the court. This is almost the whole value of the vehicle. I posted about this last year so I thought I'd share the outcome. Good things to happen in the court sometimes!

"Yeah I'm a little skeptical myself but at least I won in principle."
The principle and a dollar will buy you a cup of coffee.

Buck-seventy-five at Starbucks. And two bucks for a "black-and-white" cookie ("Look to the cookie!").

LOL, Attica.
Yes, that would fit well in the apparent path of the youth.

You know, Petronski, just-off-the-line luxury sedans make very thoughtful and appropriate gifts for brides-to-be.

How were they caught?

My car was stolen out of my driveway too about a couple years ago. The car was found, stripped for a few parts, and the thieves were never caught.

We called right away. My guess is that youthful inexperience and just wanting a joy ride is how they got caught. The police drove him off the road, hence the dent in my door :-)

My car, by the way, was stolen once. I left it running to warm up while finishing up watching football at a friend's house and when I went to leave, it was gone, while lovely snowflakes fell all around the pastoral scene.

I called the cops to report it and the dispatcher said, "Hey, we've been trying to call you! We've got your car!" (small town).

Cops picked me up and drove me to retrieve my vehicle. The only damage was a broken-off windshield wiper lever (apparently the thief thought it was an automatic and was trying to "put it in gear.")

The thief told the police he had just gotten out of jail for whatever his last offense was, went downtown and drank about 35 shots of something I don't want to know about, and was walking home when he saw my car idling there. He said in his condition, he actually thought God had left him a car so he wouldn't have to walk all the way home.

Met the guy in court; seemed like a nice guy with a lot of problems. I hope he got some help and is leading a good life now.

Glad you got your car back; sorry for the damage. But I'm sure Petronski has a brand-new sleek Lexus (leather? Oh yesss...) on order so, no problem for you!

I was awarded $1100 by the court.

Congrats!

True justice would mandate that the perp be sentenced to drive one of these.
