Howl! My grandson (8 years old) has been wanting me to hook Harm up to a sled. I just don't know how we would do it. Some kind of harness? Our vet told me that I should put Harm on a plane and send him to Alaska where he can pull sleds and I should get a 10 pound lap dog!!! GROWL!
Yep, Harm and I will have to check sled dogging out. It would be fun. We have watched "Snow Dogs" several times. :)

I will get him into a class. He has been lonely since my son-in-law tied up his bird dog before Thanksgiving because it was hunting season. Copper roams a lot. He and Harm run together, but Harm does not roam like Copper does. Harm loves to socialize with other dogs. He needs to run, too. It would be great if after the class, the trainer would let the dogs run in a fenced in pasture or something. Harm loves to race other dogs. He runs like the wind.

Yes, I am in a tiny town. Our entire county only has 60,000 people. LOL!

This is my friend and her 4 month old Great Pyrennese I'll call "Baby Huey".

She's about 60 pounds already and will be 160+ pounds when she's grown. She came to visit me yesterday and warned me that she jumps up and otherwise has no manners. I asked her if she wanted me to work on it with her, and when I called her to me she jumped up and I grabbed her feet and flipped her over backwards. She hopped up with a stunned look on her face. I called her back too me and pet her and patted her and tempted her with all kinds of excitement and squeaky voices and she wouldn't jump on me again.

If you could look into his face, you would say poor baby, too. My mother says he is a horse and is not really a house dog, but she says "poor Harm" all the time. My poor baby is not welcome to visit anyone. :( Mama tries, but she is afraid she will fall over him he is so big. He does not jump on her. He seems to sense if people, children or adults, are fragile.
Yes, putting on leashes and collars should be our first lesson. That is one of the most difficult things I have to do with him. He also pulls out of his collar and it is so hard to get it back on. He has done that in the vet's office and run around the waiting room causing all kinds of havoc.

My labs could always pull out of flat collars too, their necks are bigger than their head sometimes! So I'd use a choker/pinch collar whenever he's on leash. It's not safe otherwise.

Oh yeah that works, you just can't have a dog jump up on people
BTW I love Great Pyrennese (except the drooling)

I want him to be trained and I try to do it, but he is so darned stubborn. :) I totally sympathize, I had the most beautiful Malamute in the world. He was the strong overwhelming type. I was young then, I'm not sure I could do any better now, he was just an incorrigible fellow. He was incredibly intelligent and I think that perhaps was the problem. I also think I was more of a pushover then, actually I know I was. But still, looking back, he was a handful, we were just country folks and never considered obedience school, you either kept them or shot them. I kept him.

That is so great! Thank you! I will check on this. Harm and I could have a lot of fun. It would be good for him, too. He is getting a little bit of a gut, of course this happens in the winter. He packs it on. I guess his breed does it to keep warm.

Ok. Here we go, we will have to have a class to teach us how to apply a collar without having to have a wrestling match. :( At the vet's they use a slip knot on him. My poor baby.

Whew! I was getting worried about what you were going to say you did with him! ;) Harm may be a handful, but I love him sooooo much. He would give his life for me and I know he would kill for me. His breeder told me that his father would have killed anyone to protect her mother who owned him. Cooper, Harm's dad, was half Alaskan Malamute and half Siberian Husky and the biggest dog I had ever seen. He had feet like a Clydesdale horse. He was also very gentle. Harm looks like him except he has his mother's ears. She is a thoroughbred Chocolate Lab. Harm has his Dad's temperament, too.

I have emailed Ms. Horne to see if she can recommend any dog trainers for Harm. Shoot, I would be willing to drive to Bristol for a few classes over a week end if she does that as long as I can find a motel that would accept Harm and me. LOL! Thanks again for the info.

I am so excited! The folks from that dog sledding club are going to be coming near me on 1/28 and have asked Harm and me to come to meet with them. We are going. They have this scooter thing you can do when there is no snow. Go to dogscooter.com and see. They will help me train Harm, too. LOL! They think! They have not met him yet. Poor baby. He hurt his paw running last night. If it is not better by tomorrow or Saturday, I will have to take him to the vet.

Rats! It is 1:27 A.M. I fell asleep early tonight as I have had tummy troubles and Harm has an injured paw and has been sleeping a lot himself. I guess I missed out on the party.
Harm, Behave????? This I gotta see. ROFLOL! I don't think they know what they are up against. Although, since he has been feeling under the weather, he is behaving really well.
The guy who wrote me to tell me how to begin training Harm described him as a 28 year old kid sitting in his chair (Harm has his own chair in the great room that no one else can sit in) barking orders at me. He does bark orders at me, BTW. He told me how to take him down. I have not been able to do that yet since he hurt his paw that very day.
