CHULA VISTA A 49-year-old high school English teacher has been arrested on suspicion of child molestation and jailed on $1 million bail, authorities said.
Diego Davalos was arrested by sheriff's deputies Wednesday after classes on the Chula Vista High School campus. He is facing three counts of lewd or lascivious acts with force involving a child under 14 years old and is scheduled to be arraigned today.
Sheriff's Sgt. James Bovet said Davalos is suspected of molesting family members in Jacumba, where Davalos had lived, starting in the late 1980s and continuing until 2002.
"None of these charges are related to his position as a teacher and none of the victims were students," Bovet said. "It just so happens he happens to be a teacher at Chula Vista High School. We are unaware of any victims related to his position."
Principal Gary Chapman said he has assigned a long-term substitute to cover the classes Davalos taught. Chapman also said that the charges against Davalos were not related to his job at the school. The principal described Davalos as a popular teacher.
Davalos had been teaching at Chula Vista High for 18 years. A spokeswoman for the Sweetwater Union High School District said Davalos has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
Bovet said the continuing investigation began about a year ago.
Davalos has four children sons who are 16, 14 and 12, and a 12-year-old daughter. His wife filed for divorce to end their 17-year marriage in 2004.
In court files, she accused Davalos of physically abusing her and one of the children and of verbally abusing the children. She also reported that she had once hit her husband with a 2x4 board in self-defense, according to court files.
The divorce became final last year, and the wife was awarded custody of the children, according to court documents.
Davalos had moved out of the family's Jacumba home to an apartment in Otay Mesa.
Authorities sought a high bail for Davalos because he is considered a potential flight risk, Bovet said.
Davalos is a citizen of Ecuador who was working under a resident-alien card and was in the process of applying for U.S. citizenship.

How many of these "resident aliens" have we read about that have committed crimes in this country? How can anyone expect our bureaucracy to handle another 20 million guest worker program when they can't vet the ones here they allow in???
Remember, there are 3.6 million visa overstays roaming around the USA now that ICE can't find.

I think it's a serious violation of the teachers' union rules to molest kids who aren't our students.
