In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
perquisite \PUR-kwuh-zit\, noun
1. A profit or benefit in addition to a salary or wages.
2. Broadly: The benefits of a position or office.
3. A gratuity or tip for services performed.
4. Anything to which someone has or claims the sole right.
Example sentence:
In a tight market for skilled labor... corporations are increasingly buying homes for hot new hires -- a perquisite once reserved for top executives.
--Jennie James, "For Many Europeans, There's No Place Like Home," Time, May 8, 2000
Etymology: Perquisite derives from Medieval Latin perquisitum, from the past participle of Latin perquirere, "to search for eagerly," from per-, "through, thoroughly" + quaerere, "to seek." In Middle English it meant "property acquired by means other than inheritance." By 1565 it had acquired the sense "fringe benefit"; by 1721 it had also come to signify "a tip or gratuity."
Synonyms: benefit, fringe benefit, gravy, perk, reward.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
I'll send my helicopter to pick you up.
Couldn't we all? The cold has crept in again. It was 68 here yesterday and they're talking about snow tomorrow.
Hi Vastie. The Big 12 proved stronger than that obscure west coast team. For the life of me, I cannot understand why they have John Wayne in their commercial. His success was hardly the result of his years at SC. Astronauts, founders of companies, entrepreneurs - yes, but an actor? And I say that as a huge John Wayne fan.
Last time we went, a year or so ago, we did a boat tour around the Napali coast of Kauai, they served FOOD AND BOOZE on that boat. OMG. it was funny bc the guys running it were very nice and said that if anyone started feeling SPECIAL, that there were buckets there etc. So now, xsbrownie always refers to nausea as feeling SPECIAL! some guy did barf his guts out for all to see, i was feelng pretty dang special after that!
while not in the 60s, it has been mid40s in the AM to 50s in mid day. i haven't worn a coat to work all week.
LOL!!!
I haven't been there since June.......but I will have to venture up there the begininning of February - that's where my accuontant is :)
That kind of temp swing is brutal.
GROSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I wouldn't mind the temps - they are actually pretty good.........but there has been no sun and it is just plain old dank and damp, which makes it feel a heck of a lot colder than it is.
the scenery was spectacular though, i mostly stayed outside on the deck part. mostly bc i wanted to make sure xsbrownie wouldn't go tumbling over the side. they would stop when there were dolphins visible in the water. it was really very cool. i liked the boat better than the helicopter tour. as long as i have air on my face i can generally keep myself together.
Lucky you. Onm most of the helicopter rides I took, I was in the ocean at some point.
We never had any booze(that I'll admit to) on the cruises I took. :(
Some day, Hawaii, and then on to Machu Picchu.
yeah i can see you astride a llama, chewing coca leaves, in the Andes. : )
UH OH...............
Married man to become Catholic priest
The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington is about to get its first married transitional priest.
Deacon Leonard Klein converted to Catholicism three years ago after spending 30 years as a Lutheran minister. The 60-year-old grandfather's ordination is expected later this year.
Klein says his own research has turned up only about 100 married convert priests in the country. He will be the first in Delaware.
Klein is a deacon at Wilmington's Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
converts are ok to be married. i do not think Pope B16 is going to be allowing wholesale ordination of married men, during his tenure.
Aren't the twins cute with their Daddy!
