Late last night, or early this morning, some kind of stimulant, coffee was much needed. I was watching this great Bowl game, West Virginia vs. Georgia.
It was a near epic performance by both teams. Georgia falling behind 28-0 early fought back and nearly won the game.
But around midnight, after about four hours of viewing this game, my 59 year old eyes were closing, and I needed something to keep me awake..... so to the kitchen, the little 5 inch black and white tv on ABC to make some coffee.
By the time I got back in the bedroom it was about time for the moment of the night.
"The Mountaineers saved their biggest surprise for the end. Georgia was poised to get the ball back (with about a minute and a half left to play) when West Virginia dropped back to punt on fourth-and-6 at the Bulldogs 48. Phil Brady (punter) hauled in the long snap but took off running, gaining 10 yards on the fake and a game-clinching first down.
Georgia had been moving the ball very easily on nearly every possession in the second half. This was a gutsy call by the West Virginia coach, to let the kicker take the chance of going for the first down if he thought it was indeed there. (Georgia's defensive line on the punt return peeled back, so the kicker went for it.)
It was a great play to see.
Heres the question to you ........... how many NFL coaches, in a big playoff game, would have the guts to do as the West Virginia coach did?
I know one who would not ......... and I live in Pittsburgh, PA.
What do you say?
Used to be a lot easier when the ball wasn't so pointy at the ends.......... back in my days.
;-)
Did you stay up to see it last night?
Far out, I love coaches who do those things.
Just kidding, I'm hoping Bill is a lurker and taking notes. ;-)

Remember this cool act:
At Super Bowl XVI, San Francisco head coach Bill Walsh got to Detroit earlier than his team. He had gone somewhere to pick up an award, so he decided to meet the players when they arrived at the hotel in Detroit. Dressed in a bellhop's uniform, Walsh greeted the 49ers and kidded with them, telling them they were going to get their butts kicked. Several players absorbed the abuse before Walsh was recognized.
Cowher should try something like this before the Super Bowl.......... if we get there again.
Of course, my kids were really draggin this am when they had to go to school. It was a beautiful thing! Our high school won the state champs too. Hubby was on the WVU site for most of the night. Was a very good year!

"We were definitely playing for a return," Georgia coach Mark Richt said. "We didn't think they would do that. Give them a lot of credit. It takes a lot of nerve to do that."
Landry was a one of a kind coach....Pure Class
LF- you might want to check out Post #7
That was an awesome game -- couldn't believe the fake punt -- I thought he had punted it when all the WV players went running down the field -- best fake I think I have ever seen.
NFL coaches doing a fake punt like that? Jimmy Johnson, the Cowboys former head coach or Barry Switzer another former coach of the Cowboys would probably do something like that but not many would.
I loved Tom Landry with his suit and top hat. All these coaches now look like they are showing us for a touch football game - just wearing a sweatshirt and sweat pants.
Call me old fashion.
wow, that's one of the best pings I've ever gotten! thanks.
"...Wow, that must have been great!..."
It was!!! A fake punt is somewhat of a rarety, so to see it done two or three times in a game was even more rare. And I was there to witness it to boot! As for the game last night, I crashed late in the third quarter so I missed it live. No doubt there will be numerous replays, though. I love to see stuff like that, except when it's done against Dallas.
Always loved coaches who went for it on 4th down a lot and also used faked field goals and punts. Really keeps you as a fan on your toes. Just "playing the field position game" is boring to watch.
My idea for a new rule - a field goal is worth less points the closer it is. So, for example, a field goal from 20 to 30 yards is only worth 1 point, 31 to 40 yards is worth 2 points and 40+ years is worth 3 points. This make coaches go for it more in the Red Zone, rather can kicking field goals.
Of course, this rule will be suspended within the last 5 minutes of each half and overtime, since simply scoring 3 points at the end may be all that is necessary as opposed to a touchdown.
I watched the Sugar Bowl, and that game took ten years off my life.
I figured it was lost, but what the heck, I'd watched it that long, so I stuck with it until after midnight, and that fake punt came up and BAMMO, we had it back.
Let's gooooo Mountaineers........
............ or "not to boot".
;-)
;-)
Let's play some football.
It was SWEET.
You hate Tressel ball then? lol
LOL.
"nice catch" --- Easy. I used to be quite a great defensive centerfielder.
