Cornhole catching on at Northridge

JOHNSTOWN — From its American roots in Kentucky, according to the American Cornhole Association Web site, and moving through Cincinnati, the game of Cornhole is migrating north.

Cornhole, sometimes called Corn Toss, is similar to horseshoes but is played by tossing/pitching corn bags (similar to bean bags, but stuffed with corn kernels) onto platforms instead of throwing horseshoes at a stake. The ACA Web site lists official rules, describes the recommended cornhole court layout and specifies what counts as a foul.

Northridge physical education teacher Jennifer Yontz has introduced the game to her middle school students and recently held a sixth-grade Cornhole tournament to test the students’ corn toss competency. After warming up with stretches and other exercises, the students paired off to begin the play.

Partners stood opposite each other across the gym floor, in a pitcher’s “box,” and took turns throwing four cornbags at target wooden cornhole platforms. Besides developing eye-hand coordination and other skills, Yontz said, the game reinforces students’ math skills, as they are partially responsible for keeping their own score. Pitches going through the platform’s hole are worth three points, while those landing on the platform are worth one point, but simple counting is not the only math skill required — subtraction is also used. As in games such as shuffleboard, opposing players can knock the other team’s cornbag off the platform, negating the points it may have produced.

The ASC sets these scoring guidelines: 1. Corn Bag In-The-Hole — A corn bag in-the-hole (or Hole-In) is a corn bag which is thrown through the hole in the cornhole platform or otherwise comes to rest inside the cornhole platform. It could be knocked in by another player. A corn bag in-the-hole has a value of three points.

2. Corn Bag In-The-Count — A corn bag that is not in-the-hole but lands with any portion of the corn bag resting on the cornhole platform is in-the-count. A corn bag in-the-count has a value of one point. For a corn bag to be in-the-count, it must not touch the ground or any other portion of the court prior to coming to rest on the cornhole platform. If a corn bag touches the ground before coming to rest on the cornhole platform, it is a foul and must be removed from the cornhole platform prior to the continuation of play.

3. Corn Bag Out-Of-The-Count — A corn bag which comes to rest anywhere except in-the-count or in-the-hole is out-of-the-count and has no scoring value. A corn bag which is declared to be a foul is considered to be out-of-the-count (no matter where it comes to rest) and must be removed from the cornhole surface prior to the continuation of play.

Yontz said the game is popular with players of all ages because it can be adapted for any skill level.

“Even a person on crutches can play it, “ she said. Northridge student Sarah Grindle is one of the players who really likes Corn Toss.

“It’s fun, ” she said. “You don’t have to be really good at anything to play it. You can just play it and have fun.”

Don't know. I've only cornholed one time and won the event.

If you ever want to give cornholing a try, let me know.

Have bean bag, will travel.

All jokes about cornholes aside, this game sounds similar to one taught to my family by midwest neighbors (from Iowa, if I recall correctly). It consisted of throwing large washers into a buried soup can at some fixed distance. Good times. We still play it.

So, in your version, you try to get your nutz in the can, rather than your bag in the hole?

Okay, that's just a too weird visual.

Tossing your nuts off into a can, or putting your bag in the hole, either way they all sound like good times!
