'Rumor' fades justs as it starts; Troubled Warner pic sinks at B.O. (Hollywarped bomb by Rob Reiner)

The "Rumor" mill grinds on. With Warner's romantic comedy "Rumor Has It..." taking in just $7 million in its opening frame, second-guessing quickly ramped up. Not that Warners execs should have been surprised: Tracking data on the project -- which Rob Reiner took over directing just 10 days into shooting when tyro helmer Ted Griffin was fired -- showed the pic wasn't likely to wow.

Griffin, who penned the screenplay, might be glad he got the boot. Not so happy might be Reiner-- who hasn't seen a hit in some time, and who lately has been preoccupied by politics and his universal preschool initiative -- and Section Eight which produced the pic for Warners.

Critics lambasted Reiner for applying a shallow gloss to what was, at its heart, a quirky, indie-like script. One even quipped that Reiner directed "between naps." But some blame might rightly rest with Griffin, who decided to give the pic a mainstream feel in casting Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner and Shirley MacLaine.

Mark Ruffalo was the only "indie" guy in the bunch. You'd never guess from the utterly mainstream marketing and poster that the film picks up where "The Graduate" left off. Instead, you might think Aniston had landed a new post-"Friends" TV show.

Pic was to be released last April, but was pushed to December because it wasn't ready. But in opting for a Christmas Day berth as counterprogramming, Warners put the film into competition with seven other wide releases. With that kind of jostling, it's no wonder this "Rumor" never got started.

I disagree about Seinfeld. I find him and the whole genre to be about self-absorbed losers interested only in naval lint.

I didn't say I agreed with anything she's done (except the adoptions)....I just said she's interesting and I can understand why men are attracted to her. Plus, I don't think she's skanky...I think she's the most gorgeous woman in the world right now. Just different tastes, I guess.

I have a feeling Angelina has bought plenty of tubes of Monistat vaginal cream and Zovirax.

Uh...that's why it was so funny. Just out of curiousity, what modern TV show do you think WAS/IS funny?

But Aniston has bigger boobs - doesn't that make her a bigger star?

This is Spinal Tap was made over 20 years ago. Reiner is a one-hit-wonder.

Reiner's company Castle Rock produced the TV series Seinfeld, among many other projects.

I hear Reiner is making a movie about his boyhood hero:

Reiner's whole life has been based on his hero's exploits on stage and screen. Duh.

You're right about that, but that's what made them funny.

One hit wonder...I don't think so:

A Few Good Men (1992)
Misery (1990)
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
The Princess Bride (1987)
Stand by Me (1986)

....Aniston has bigger boobs....

Yeah, but are they gummy bears (the newest of the new), or plain ol' silicone?

Well, I haven't seen every woman in the world, so I can't say if Jolie is the most gorgeous. I can't say I think she is more gorgeous than Halle Berry, or any number of Hollywood babes on the scene. For pure perfection, it's hard to beat Berry.

Some here admit they have never seen his movies, yet they are authorities on his career. Funny how that works. :)
