What software should I use to rip CD's to mp3?
self/vanity | 12/29/2005 | self

I bought my wife an MP3 player for Christmas, but really don't know what software to use to rip the CD's that we have into MP3 file format. I'd appreciate any recommendations, preferably something that doesn't cost (gratis from the writer of the code, not pirated).

Thanks in advance

No, iTunes supports regular plain-old mp3s in addition to a few other formats.

I wish they had FLAC support instead of that Apple Lossless stuff, though.

Another vote for Nero.

CDex is free, fast, small, and doesn't muck with your registry. (Assuming you're running some flavor of Windows, that is.)

I like Goldwave Audio Converter and Nero for burning.

If you buy audiobooks from Audible.com, they've thrown a monkey wrench into the works with their proprietary mod of mp3 format. And unfortunately, their CD burning plug-in software has a propensity to conflict with CD and DVD drives on a computer, and disable them. To get rid of the mp3 mod and convert to a straight mp3 that you can load onto any mp3 player without a hitch, I recommend using River Past Audio Converter v. 5.0.0. Only version that will do it. Google it for the how-to if you're interested.

Since you're Windows, and if your player supports WMA, I strongly recommend using it to save a lot of storage space and retain quality. You can rip to WMA with or without copy protection - of course I don't know why you'd enable that option for your own use.

The only drawback is that I don't know of any CD players or car stereos that can play WMA (most modern ones can handle MP3) - but I don't keep up with that, so they may exist now.

Want free? Windows Media Player rips CDs. It's not the best, but it's fast and free.

Does itunes do mp3 ripping?

As I think about it, it doesn't. Sorry for the quick answer. When I rip MP3s to a CD, I use the Finder (i.e. just drag the files to the disc then hit burn) It's been a few months since I made one. IIRC, I was stuck with alphabetical order.

Audiograbber.
It's now free and it is the most robust and flexible....and I've used them all. Well, a lot of them anyway.
