Have not a clue what a Prog is, but can give you my favorite bagpiper...does that count?
To: Gillmeister
Well there is never just one at the top IMO. I like many, cant even name them all.
Yes Genesis with "Home By The Sea" was a good one.
More recently I like Depeche Mode, and some of the Cure. Lindsey Buckingham's 1993 "Out Of The Cradle" I liked also.

early Yes "Close to the Edge" might be one of the best albums ever......Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" and "Foxtrot".........King Crimson "Court of the Crimson King" All excellent choices, and I agree with all of them ... lemme add Jethro Tull "Thick As A Brick" and Emerson Lake & Palmer "Brain Salad Surgery" to that list :)
To: Gillmeister
The Gabriel/Collins era was certainly the Genesis that I liked most. Supper's Ready is one of my favorites
Don't forget to add Emerson Lake and Palmer to the very top of the list.
Jethro Tull
SuperTramp
Renaissance
David Bowie
Jefferson Airplane
Electric Light Orchestra
The Pretenders
and on occation - the great Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
There were so many progressive rock / art rock / classical rock bands, it's hard to pick them all.
To: Prince Charles
Yep, Alan Parsons is great with headphones on......lol
To: Prince Charles
Art rock...
how about Pere Ubu?
If we include art rock, we might as well include Kraut Rock, such as Can.

Ah - so you're the other ELP fan out there. Great to meet you.
To: Gillmeister
I have heard of both, but I am not familiar with their music. Is it worth giving a try? What do you suggest as a starting point?

Awww.... there's good stuff out there. This stuff we thought was so intelligent back in our nerd days was really pretentious and icky. CTTE holds up, but everything else YES did was embarrassing. Give me Enya!

Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" Can you tell me where my country's gone ... cried a uniform to his true loves eyes .........

ELP, until they jumped the shark with Love Beach (or, arguably, Works II) Uggghhh .. yep, yer right.
I saw ELP in 1977 at MSG for the "Works volume I" tour, complete with a 70 piece orchestra, which got so expensive for them to take on the road with them that they were forced to fire the orchestra after that concert ... a shame really, it was a great show :)

Dream Theater "Awake" from 1994 really rocks, like I said, it's more metal, but awesome musicians.

That is right on tahoeblue! BTW the first album I ever bought was Jefferson Airplane's "Crown of Creation" -- lol

Yes.... without a second's hesitation.
"Awaken", "On The Silent Wings Of Freedom", "Heart Of The Sunrise", "Siberian Khatru", "And You And I","Roundabout"....the brilliance goes on and on.

EARLY King Crimson were defintly rated Prog Rock drummer Bill Bruford - (upon being asked why he left YES just when they were hitting the big time, to join King Crimson) said:
"It was the only gig where one could play in 13/8 time and still get a decent hotel room"
.... Priceless :)

"and on occasion - the great Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention"
I'm something of a Zappa fan, but "Come On Frenchie" wasn't one of those occasions, lol.
