KYLIE'S tiny golden hot pants may bring some extra festive cheer to fans as an exhibition of the pop diva's costumes opens in Sydney.

More than 40 outfits - including the hot pants worn by Kylie in her Spinning Around video in 2000 - are on display from today at the Powerhouse Museum in inner-city Ultimo.

The Australian pop princess reportedly bought the 1970s hot pants from a charity store in London for 50 pence.

The exhibition includes costumes from Kylie's early videos such as I Should Be So Lucky, and Better The Devil You Know, to the more recent Red Blooded Woman and Chocolate.

It even extends to the overalls that helped make Kylie a household name in both Australia and the UK as motor mechanic Charlene Mitchell in Neighbours.

Outfits worn by Kylie during the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games and during both her appearances at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras are also on display.

More than 44 designers are represented, including Italian duo Dolce and Gabbana which designed her entire wardrobe for the 2002 Fever tour.

The exhibition is drawn from more than 300 items Kylie donated from her personal collection of career memorabilia to the Arts Centre in Melbourne.

It has already toured the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane.

Kylie, currently battling breast cancer, says she wants fans to be able to see the wear and tear of the items.

"I am thrilled at the response the Kylie exhibition has received so far in Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane and hope that my Sydney fans will enjoy it just as much when it opens at the Powerhouse Museum on Boxing Day," she said.

The museum will also run a series of workshops, including dance sessions with Kylie's choreographers and dancers on March 18 and 19.

Kylie: an exhibition runs until May 7.

Yeah, I tend to doubt that her notoriety is attributable solely to her show-stopping vocals.
