'Brokeback Mountain' tops Oscar bets

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Gay and political films are dominating this year's Academy Awards race with some experts expecting that Oscar will wind up wearing pink, either for left-leaning politics or sexual preference.

As Hollywood starts its annual awards season leading to the March 5 Oscars, key front-runners in main categories are either gay-themed or political films, with Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain," a drama of love between cowboys, leading the pack in the all-important best picture race.

"It could be the gay Oscars this year because gay-themed movies could win almost all the major awards," said Tom O'Neill, show business awards columnist for The Envelope.Com., referring to the sudden dominance "Brokeback Mountain" has gained so early in the race.

"'Brokeback' is going to be hard to beat. Rarely do we have this kind of award consensus for a movie, and its director (Taiwan's Ang Lee) is long overdue for an Oscar," O'Neill said.

"Brokeback," the first gay romance to make a bid for mainstream respectability, has already won the top awards handed out by critics in New York and Los Angeles and copped seven nominations for the January 16 Golden Globes, often a key indicator as to which way the Oscar wind might be blowing.

As for political films -- the field is crowded with potential winners: "Munich," "Good Night, and Good Luck," "Syriana," and "The Constant Gardener."

Many experts predict that "Brokeback's" toughest competition could come from either George Clooney's "Goodnight, and Good Luck," a steely-eyed examination of the McCarthy era, or "Munich," Steven Spielberg's study of the price Israel paid for its reprisals for the murder of its athletes at the 1972 Olympics.

DON'T COUNT "MUNICH" OUT

Before the race began and before anyone had a chance to see Spielberg's movie, it was being touted as the odds-on favorite to snare the best picture award, namely because Spielberg is a revered figure in Hollywood and had chosen to make his most serious movie since "Schindler's List."

The film is an examination of the cost of fighting terrorism and whether a democracy can use methods like targeted assassinations without destroying or shaming itself.

The film was hit by a backlash as soon as it was shown to Jewish American and Israeli groups, who argue that Spielberg ignored arguments that Israel was justified in using the methods it does in the war against terrorists.

New Republic literary editor Leon Wieseltier wrote that "'Munich' prefers a discussion of counterterrorism to a discussion of terrorism; or it thinks that they are the same discussion. This is an opinion that only people who are not responsible for the safety of other people can hold."

David Poland of Movie City News said that "Munich" has to overcome the impression that it is anti-Israeli and possibly can do this "because the anti-Israeli accusation is a neoconservative one and not a mainstream Jewish one."

He noted that at screenings at the headquarters of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, whose members give out the Oscars, "Munich" was well received.

Poland, himself, is optimistic, predicting that "'Munich will still win the Academy Award. I think 'Brokeback' will suffer when it goes into a wider viewing."

Other films with gay characters or gender-challenging themes that have won prominence this year include "Capote," thanks to its standout performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman as writer Truman Capote, and "TransAmerica," with Felicity Huffman winning rave reviews as a man on the verge of completing a sex change.

In this movie, she's a woman playing a man about to become a woman and if that sounds easy, rest assured it isn't.

"Brokeback Mountain" is also doing well at the box office -- even though it is only in 69 theaters, it was last week's eighth-highest-grossing movie.

Because it cost 200 million to make.

What does that have to do with anything? Only low-budget films that no one sees should get attention. Barebutt Mountin' has onlg grossed about 10% of its costs so far. People are seeing Chronicles, only gays and elitists are seeing Barebutt.

Clearly made to appeal to the gay community:

Brokeback's homophonic equivalence to "bareback" is not accidental

This film advocates extremely deadly behavior. It kills the participants, infects innocents, and threatens the community.

But it is such a touching movie of men abandoning their wifes and kids to have sex in the mountains. What a great 'love' story.

But I don't think it can be called a failure just yet.

If they run it in the homosexual friendly places first, they are bound to generate more profits initially. Using this they can say,

"Look the movie did really well at release. Better than expected. You should see it too!"

It's all propanganda.

Good. Now they won't have any problem with where they can shove their worthless trophy.

That's what the homos are for.

This "touching" movie must be viewed as Hollywood being part of a plot to kill off homosexuals.

Otherwise, why advocate deadly behavior?

On another note, I'd rather dig ditches with a sand box shovel than sit though the Oscars....EVEN if a year in which all the movies are the best I've ever seen.

Boring, boring, boring....

When Bareback wins the Oscar, I predict Hollywood will unleash a new genre of the old western classics redone with a gay theme.

"Flaming Saddles"

"Raw Hind"

"Buns Poke"

The Good, the Bad, and the Fagly"

"Buttborossa!"

Good observation.

Some random thoughts about homosexuality.

I wonder how many in the general public understand the full magnitude of what homosexuality really encumbers.

The perversion associated with the homosexual lifestyle should be a fair warning of what is to come.

Homosexuals do a lot more than just have mouth to mouth copulation and anal sex.

They support the debasing of traditional marriage.

Many Homosexuals, also are members of and support groups that prey on children.

Something I have not seen discussed on this forum is the religion of homosexuals.

Most homosexuals have to change religions due to the need for justification of their lifestyle.

One thing for sure, this perverted view of American life has found a home deep in the base of the Democrat party.

It might also explain why their is so much anti-American traditional sentiment in the mindset of current Democrat leaders.

Anti-Americanism in the form of anti-Christmas, military, flag and on and on.

Not all women.

This week 'The Brothers Grimm' came out on DVD.
I'd been looking forward to buying it for some time.

When this Humpback Mounting deal hit the boards I did *not* buy the Brothers Grimm simply because I don't care to drop a dime into Heath Ledger's handbag.

I DESPISE soap operas, romance novels and anything else of that delusional, apron-wringing ilk.

[and guys who "talk or think girls" are closet queens, IMO. "sensitive" men should just put a skirt on and be done with it]....:)

debase traditional marriage...

Which apparently takes place in this movie.

This movie glorifies & advocates the abuse of women in marriage. It recommends cheating on them in an abominable fashion....the anguish created is definitely emotional abuse.

The biological dangers brought home to the wives is physical abuse of the 1st order.

Great!

The freaks which control Hollyweird and are driving the film industry into financial ruin will be exposed to the entire nation for the kind of perverted, vile scum they are.

Once they are driven out of business by continuing to pimp these box-office failures, perhaps normal, partiotic people will replace these directors and producers from the sewer of America's soul and make decent movies again.

Liberals are so predictable...I said YEARS ago that I can easily predict Oscar nonimations and NEVER attend a moive (which I almost never do). From Norma Rae (pro-union), to Last Temptation of Christ (make Jesus a liberal), to Brokeback Mountain (make homosexuality appear normal), Hollyweird no longer makes movies...they produce propaganda.

They are so child like, and yet foolishly arrogant at the same time.

Its official, The Oscars are for Homosexuals.

The Oscars should have a MA warning if not a full blown "H" to warn parents that the Oscar program deals with sexually explicit material.

The whole "INTENTIONAL LOSS" of brokenback mountain is to portray the two men having homosexual sex as "love".

Homosexuality is never ever about love, homosexuality is ONLY about recreational sex fetishes.

You are right this is a 100% pure propaganda effort. The Oscars need to have a MA for explicit sexual content warning.
