NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees grabbed center fielder Johnny Damon away from the rival Boston Red Sox, reaching a preliminary agreement Tuesday night on a $52 million, four-year contract.

Damn Yankees!!!! :o(
MM
One great memory of Damon, as described by Joe Castiglione:
ALCS Game 7, 2004, at Yankee Stadium. 2nd inning.
"There's a long fly ball to right field, Sheffield
looking up--it's GONE! GRAND SLAM, JOHNNY DAMON! And the
Red Sox add four more!" (Went up 6-0...)
Jerry Seinfeld is right. You are really only cheering on laundry. One day the player on your team can do no wrong and the next when traded or gone to another team he is the worst enemy. That said I happen to like my teams laundry. :)
He's just not worth $13 million a year. But, if the Yankees want to continue losing money then that's their choice. Shame on the Sox for not having a guy in the minors.

Just contemplate that line-up... Imagine you are pitching to that line-up.
There is no such thing as a guarantee in baseball, but the Yankees are doing everything they can to make it happen.
They do!
It's going to be a long summer in Beantown. They'd better get a G.M.!!!
NO!!!!!, Mays and Mantle were great outfielders.
But the Yankees MAKE money. That's why everyone else (particularly Boston fans) gets pissed.
I remember in '79 when Pete Rose left Cincinnati to play for the Phillies. As a long suffering Philadelphia fan, I grew up despising Rose. Suddenly I thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. A lot of Yankees fans probably feel the same way about Damon.
And you Boston fans calling him a washed up bum.... You know that deep in your heart, you still wish you had him. He's better than any other center fielder you'll end up with this season.
I was going to mention that. Damon will be pining for the comfy confines of Old Fenway long before the All Star break. Got cortizone?
He'll need to borrow some of Giambi's HGH.
The Yankees generate revenue, not profit. An ESPN article a month or two back estimated the Yankees losses were close to $85 million. The value of the team allows them to carry debt. The reason for this loss is that with revenue sharing and luxury taxes they wind up having to fork over a lot of cash.
Being the liberal that he is Peter Gammons thinks it's great that revenue sharing exists.
The Boston Herald mentioned the team was in talks with Cleveland, Seattle and San Diego.
At least we have the Patriots. Training camp opens in July!
Piazza signed with the Yanks? Did I miss something? \sarc
You also need pitching in order to win a championship. Their staff was miserable in 2005 and they haven't done much to improve it for 2006. The Red Sox, on the other hand, appear to have a strong staff, as long as Beckett, Miller, and Schilling can stay healthy. While the Red Sox may have lost some in offense, I think overall they are going to do better than the Yankees, assuming no major moves between now and the beginning of the season
Does he pitch? What a nightmare another season with a boatload of lemon pitchers.
Sox rotation
Schilling
Beckett
Clement (maybe trade bait but $18 million for 2 years is a lot for someone to swallow)
Arroyo (trade Bait)
Wakefield
Fat Boy Wells (Trade likely)
Papelbon (could go to the pen but should be a starter)
Wade Miller unlikely to do anything in 2006 due to shoulder surgery.
I love Fenway Park dearly... I'd be heartsick if it were to be torn down or left to rot in favor of a "bigger, better stadium". My husband and I go to many games at Fenway each season... usually we get seats in the bleachers (about $12 or $23), grandstand ($27) or the new roof deck ($45). If we (rarely) find ourselves in a "less-than-desirable" seat, we move around the park, and almost always end up finding a couple of good empty seats elsewhere. Several times we've been very lucky and ended up behind home plate after paying only 12 bucks each for bleacher seats. Granted, this doesn't happen during games when the Sox are playing the Yankees.
$30 for parking?! We usually park at the Prudential Center or at another lot we know of a couple of blocks from Fenway, located in sort of a back alley. We've never paid a dime over $15 to park for a game.
