Welcome to the OFFICIAL Friday/Saturday Night Singles' Thread
"We're Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight...Let's Celebrate...It's All Right!"
In store for tonight (as proposed by apackof2):
To get our thread started, we're going to answer these questions:
1) "When and why did you join Free Republic?"
2) "What was going on at the time?" (Top movies, favorite song(s), price of gas, etc.)
3) "What happened on that day in history?"
Of possible further interest:

Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots
conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse,
to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.
And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!

*sigh*
Upstairs neighbor is spreading his noise again, and it's two thirty in the morning here. I'm supposed to call the on-call person here to verify noise complaints, but I really, really hate to wake someone up to deal with this creep. Grrr...how people can be so blindly inconsiderate, I really don't know.

Wish I had still been up to get you through it...I have noisy neighbors, too.

This was just baaaad. I'm pretty tolerant of intermittant noise - it's an apartment complex, after all. Can't expect miracles, and I'm sure I annoy neighbors at times, too. But this was LOUD rap and LOUD talking with LOTS of serious profanity. Fun. I complained about them again today (this is the second night running they'd partied), which I hated to do, but they did talk to the guy. He's said he'll be more careful in the future. I hate to get folks in trouble, but...I need sleep! Kids these days... < /cranky old-woman-in-training >

Since then, America's law enforcement personnel have used this critical law to prosecute terrorist operatives and supporters, and to break up terrorist cells in New York, Oregon, Virginia, California, Texas and Ohio. The Patriot Act has accomplished exactly what it was designed to do: it has protected American liberty and saved American lives. It was a wonderful speech -- I cannot wait for the address tomorrow evening.

I think I saw the headline on that, but missed the article. Didn't his bodyguard end up getting killed?

The TWU had postponed its strike deadline until this coming Monday.
They're striking against the Green Line bus routes in Queens.
Keep in mind, what they're planning on doing is illegal under the (toothless) Taylor Law.

I had a feeling that they would at least postpone.

Yeah, the problem is that the TWU always emerges victorious from strikes-even though they are docked two days pay for each day they're out on strike-because the feckless public officials we have in this city-and to a lesser extent, this state-allow them to get away with murder.

That irritates me to no end -- having laws that aren't enforced.

The Regime Change Iran blog had an interesting take on the assassination attempt:
However, for months now there have been rumors that the Rafsanjani and Khatami factions may attempt to have Ahamdinejad assassinated in hopes of obtaining a "grand bargain" with the international community which leaves the regime in place while they continue their secret nuclear program. Ahmadinehad has been threatening many in the Rafsanjani and Khatami factions with arrest under corruption charges.
