Word For The Day, Thursday, December 15, 2005 - chatoyant
dictionaries ad nauseum | December 15, 2005 | secret garden

Posted on 12/15/2005 4:44:16 AM PST by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

chatoyant • \shuh-TOY-unt\ • adjective
: having a changeable luster or color with an undulating narrow band of white light

Example sentence:
The chest was opened to reveal a veritable treasure of glittering gold jewelry and chatoyant gems.

Etymology: The complex structure of a cat's eye not only enables it to see at night but also gives it the appearance of glowing in the dark. Not surprisingly, jewels that sport a healthy luster are often compared with the feline ocular organ, so much that the term "cat's-eye" is used to refer to those gems (such as chalcedony) that give off iridescence from within. If you've brushed up on your French lately, you might notice that the French word for "cat" ("chat") provides the first four letters of "chatoyant," a word used by jewelers to describe such lustrous gems. "Chatoyant" derives from the present participle of "chatoyer," a French verb that literally means "to shine like a cat's eyes."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Look at you dubs, going for the obsequious extry cred

Actually I thought of it first in the Latin, then needed to look up the English on this one, lol.

Exactly. We pointed out the magic of the season, when being reminded of Jesus' birth brings out the very best in people.

it really wasn't acrimonious, a number of them stepped back from their position somewhat. but then i understand it is a yearly debate on FR, but i just hadn't run across it before.it has been acrimonious in the past, apparently.

Every last one of them. Well except for a few phrases spoken by the soldiers in "The Passion of the Christ".

In fact I lifted my homework from the Latin Mass.

That was one of the funniest WFTD threads ever. I literally laughed out loud so many times I thought for sure someone was going to come into my cubicle to see wth was going on.

Comment Section: Although it is confusing, today's WFTD is not to be confused with Michael Jackson's sister.

You mean his sister, Clairevoyant?

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the night
The liberals were stirring and OH what a sight.

The Christians were hurrying home for the night,
calling out Merry Christmas - giving liberals a fright.

The battle for Christmas was on for this year,
with Fox News crews leading the "Save Christmas" cheer.

The battleground was fierce and the schools were ground zero.
With liberal teachers telling children there was no Santa hero.

It was all a lie, the liberal teacher chattered,
while innocent first graders' dreams were shattered.

But the legend of Santa was up to the test,
the chatoyant gleam in Santa's eye would not rest.

The reindeer were ready for the round the world flight,
singing Christmas carols with all their might.

No PC Christmas songs without cheer,
but the traditional songs that they hold dear.

As Santa Claus ventured out of sight,
He shouted, "Merry Christmas to All and To All a Goodnight!"
